Bhubaneswar Set to Host India’s First World Athletics Continental Tour Silver Meet
Bhubaneswar is set to mark another important milestone in Indian athletics when the Kalinga Stadium hosts the country’s first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver Level meeting on August 22.
The one-day competition will feature an 18-event program comprising nine men’s and nine women’s events, bringing international competition to India at a time when the country’s leading athletes are entering the final phase of their preparations for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
Among the international names expected to compete are Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga, the Paris Olympics bronze medalist in the men’s 400m, and Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the Commonwealth Games champion in men’s shot put.
Their presence adds an international dimension to an event that could become an important fixture on India’s athletics calendar.
The Bhubaneswar meeting represents a significant step up from the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level event held at the same venue in August 2025.
The difference is not merely in the classification. Silver-level competitions offer athletes Category B points towards the World Athletics Rankings, compared with Category C points available at bronze-level meetings.
The upgrade is therefore expected to attract a stronger field while giving Indian athletes an opportunity to earn valuable ranking points without travelling overseas. The financial scale of the competition has also increased substantially. World Athletics regulations require a Silver Level meeting to offer a minimum total prize purse of USD 75,000, compared with the USD 25,000 purse offered at last year's Bronze Level competition.
For Indian athletes chasing qualification, ranking improvements and international exposure, the combination of stronger competition and ranking points makes the meeting particularly significant.
18 events across track and field
The program covers a broad range of disciplines.
The men's schedule will feature the 100m, 400m, 800m, 5000m, 110m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin throw. The women's programme will include the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 5000m, 100m hurdles, high jump, long jump, discus throw and javelin throw.
The official entry list has not yet been released, meaning the final composition of the fields remains to be confirmed. However, several leading Indian athletes are expected to be among the potential entrants.
The home contingent is set to include as many as 88 athletes, with some of India's most recognizable names in the program's events.
Among the possible attractions is Sreeshankar, who won silver at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The long jumper has already enjoyed a strong association with Kalinga Stadium and will be one of the athletes to watch if he competes.
The men's javelin could feature Yash Vir Singh, who recently produced a personal best of 85.41m to win bronze at the Commonwealth Games.
Other prominent names expected to be part of India's contingent include two-time Asian Games shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor, men's 200m national record holder Animesh Kujur and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav.
In the women's events, Commonwealth Games discus bronze medalist Seema Kaliramna is another potential entrant.
An important stop before the Asian Games
The timing of the competition makes it particularly relevant for India's Asian Games campaign. The 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya will be held from September 19 to October 4, meaning the Bhubaneswar meeting comes less than a month before the continental multi-sport event.
Kalinga Stadium will subsequently host India's final Asian Games preparatory camp from August 18 to September 8. Around 60 athletes, coaches, and support staff are expected to be involved in the camp.
A number of Indian athletes currently training in Spata, Poland, are expected to return to Bhubaneswar and compete at the Silver Level meeting before continuing their preparations at the camp. That makes the competition more than a standalone international athletics meet. For India's Asian Games-bound athletes, it provides an opportunity to test form, competition rhythm, and event-specific preparation against international opposition on home soil.
The meet could also offer athletes who are not part of the core Asian Games group an opportunity to improve their rankings and establish themselves against a stronger field.
Neeraj Chopra unlikely to compete
One notable absentee is expected to be Neeraj Chopra. The two-time Olympic medalist is scheduled to compete at the Lausanne Diamond League on August 21, where he will face Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem and Commonwealth Games champion Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage.
With the Lausanne competition taking place just a day before the Bhubaneswar meet, Chopra is unlikely to feature at Kalinga Stadium. His absence, however, will not diminish the significance of the competition for the wider Indian contingent.
The Silver Level meeting also forms part of Bhubaneswar's expanding role as an athletics destination. The Odisha capital has increasingly emerged as one of India's major centers for high-performance sport, and its athletics calendar is set to grow further in the coming years. Bhubaneswar will host the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in January 2028, before staging the World Athletics Indoor Championships from March 3 to 5 later that year.
The Continental Tour Silver meeting therefore provides another opportunity for the city to demonstrate its ability to stage international athletics at a higher level. For Indian athletes, meanwhile, the August 22 competition offers something equally valuable: high-quality competition at home, ranking points and an important final test before the Asian Games.
With Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallists joining India's leading track and field athletes, the first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting in the country could become an important landmark in the continued growth of Indian athletics.
