India End Day 4 of World U20 Athletics Championships with Three Medals as Pooja Singh Keeps Podium Hopes Alive
India completed Day 4 of the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 in Eugene, Oregon, with three medals already secured, setting up an exciting final day of competition.
The Indian medal tally includes Ashish Yadav in men’s javelin throw, Basant Kumar Meghwal in men’s high jump and Shahnawaz Khan in men’s long jump.
With the women’s high jump final and women’s 4x400m relay final still to come on Day 5, India has two more opportunities to add to its medal tally before the championships conclude. For Indian athletics, the campaign has already been significant, particularly in the field events, where the country's young athletes have produced historic performances on the global stage.
Basant Kumar Meghwal delivered one of India's standout performances of the championships by winning silver in the men's high jump. The Indian cleared 2.21 m, matching his personal best, and became the first Indian athlete to win a high jump medal at a world-level championship. The performance was especially significant because Basant was involved in a closely contested medal battle, with the podium positions eventually being decided through countback after multiple athletes cleared the same height.
His silver medal has added another major milestone to India's growing reputation in junior field events and provided a new benchmark for the country's high jumpers. Basant's achievement is also part of a remarkable year for Indian high jump.
Indian high jump has enjoyed a particularly successful 2026 season, with Sarvesh Anil Kushare, Basant Kumar and Pooja Singh all producing major performances. Sarvesh Kushare raised the senior men's national record to 2.31m, surpassing Tejaswin Shankar's previous mark of 2.29m at the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
Kushare subsequently made his Diamond League debut and became only the fourth Indian athlete to record a top-three finish at a Diamond League meeting, joining Vikas Gowda, Neeraj Chopra and Murali Sreeshankar. He then added an international medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning silver after clearing 2.25m.
Basant's World U20 silver has now added another major international achievement to that story. And the women's event could provide another highlight.
Pooja Singh Reaches High Jump Final
Pooja Singh has secured her place in the women's high jump final at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026. The Indian cleared 1.79m during qualification to earn her place in the medal round. Her qualification comes after a breakthrough season in which she was crowned U20 Asian champion and broke the long-standing Indian junior national record in the event. Pooja cleared 1.93m, surpassing Sahana Kumari's 14-year-old record of 1.91m.
The World U20 final therefore represents another major opportunity for the young high jumper. The medal competition is scheduled for August 10 at 1:00 AM IST, giving Pooja one final opportunity to add another chapter to India's extraordinary high-jump season.
India's medal tally was further strengthened by Shahnawaz Khan in the men's long jump. Khan produced a 7.84m effort to secure bronze, continuing India's impressive run in horizontal jumps at the championships. His performance adds to the growing legacy of Indian long jumpers at the World U20 level. Shahnawaz's medal follows Shaili Singh's silver in the women's long jump at the 2021 World U20 Championships.
The emergence of another Indian long jumper on the global junior podium highlights the depth developing within India's field-event programme. With both vertical and horizontal jumps producing medals in Eugene, the championships have provided strong evidence of India's progress beyond its traditionally stronger athletics disciplines.
Ashish Yadav has also contributed to India's three-medal tally through his performance in the men's javelin throw. His podium finish ensures that India's field-event athletes have once again played a central role in the country's campaign at a major global championship. Together with Basant and Shahnawaz, Yadav's medal means India has already secured three podium finishes before the final day.
The performances also underline the importance of India's continued investment in developing athletes across different field-event disciplines.
India will also be represented in the women's 4x400m relay final on the final day. The quartet of Bhoomika Nehate, Tahura Khatun, Tanu Chaudhary and Thiya Arumugam booked their place in the medal race after finishing third in their heat. Their qualification was highlighted by a strong third leg from Tanu Chaudhary, who helped move India back into the automatic qualification positions before Thiya Arumugam completed the job on the anchor leg.
The final gives the Indian quartet an opportunity to compete against some of the world's strongest junior relay teams and potentially add a fourth medal to India's tally.
Two More Chances on Day 5
India's campaign at the World U20 Championships has already delivered three medals, but the final day could make the tally even more impressive.
Pooja Singh will be the first major Indian medal contender in action, entering the women's high jump final at 1:00 AM IST. Later, the women's 4x400m relay team will take to the track for its medal race. The performances of Basant, Shahnawaz and Ashish have already ensured a successful championship for India. Pooja and the relay quartet now have the opportunity to build on that foundation.
For Indian athletics, the bigger story is the breadth of the campaign. From high jump and long jump to javelin and relay running, India's young athletes have demonstrated the ability to compete across multiple disciplines.
Three medals are already secured. Two more opportunities remain on Day 5. India's World U20 campaign is not finished yet.
