Fresh Selection Trials Signal Reset for Indian Men’s Volleyball Ahead of Key International Season
The Volleyball Federation of India has initiated a significant step toward rebuilding and strengthening the senior men’s national team, announcing a fresh round of selection trials alongside a newly constituted selection committee.
Scheduled to be held at the SAI Centre of Excellence in Ahmedabad from April 29 to May 1, 2026, these trials are expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s squads for upcoming international assignments, including the AVC Men’s Cup and the Asian Games. At the centre of this process is a seven-member selection committee that blends international exposure, domestic experience, and technical expertise. The composition of this panel reflects a deliberate attempt to bring multiple perspectives into the selection process, a move that could influence both short-term results and long-term development.
Leading the committee is head coach Dragan Mihailovic, whose presence ensures that the selection aligns closely with the tactical and strategic framework of the national team. Having a head coach directly involved in player evaluation often results in more coherent squad building, particularly when preparing for high-stakes tournaments where system fit is as critical as individual ability. Supporting him is Mahamaya Chaudhary, a former Indian player who has transitioned into coaching. Her inclusion adds a valuable layer of understanding from both playing and coaching standpoints, particularly in assessing player temperament and adaptability—factors that are often difficult to quantify but vital in team sports like volleyball.
Abhijit Bhattacharya brings a different dimension to the panel. As a former captain of the Indian team and founder of the Volleyball League ecosystem in the country, his involvement bridges the gap between elite competition and grassroots development. His insights into player progression and competitive readiness could prove instrumental in identifying athletes capable of stepping up to the international level. The analytical component of the committee is strengthened by the presence of Ashutosh Mishra, a performance analyst with experience working with Dutch junior teams. In modern volleyball, data-driven decision-making has become increasingly important, and Mishra’s background suggests that metrics such as efficiency, positional discipline, and match impact could play a more prominent role in selections.
Tom Joseph, another former international player turned coach, adds further depth to the panel. His understanding of the domestic circuit and player pool provides a practical perspective, particularly when evaluating consistency across competitions. Similarly, Lavmeet Kataria, also a former national player, contributes firsthand experience of the demands of international volleyball, ensuring that selections are grounded in the realities of elite competition. Completing the committee is Jaideep Sarkar, whose recent credentials include leading the Indian men’s team to a sixth-place finish at the Asian Games 2023. That campaign, highlighted by a notable win over South Korea in the group stage, remains one of India’s more competitive outings in recent years. Sarkar’s involvement adds continuity, linking past performance benchmarks with current selection decisions.
The trials themselves are not merely routine evaluations but represent a broader reset. Players will be assessed for inclusion in a long list of 28, which will then be narrowed down to a core group of 20. This structured approach indicates an emphasis on depth, ensuring that the national team has adequate options across positions while maintaining competitive standards. Importantly, the trials are being conducted with a clear timeline and accountability framework. Selection committee members are required to be present throughout the process, and a detailed report must be submitted within seven days of completion.
