World U20 silver medallist Selva Prabhu is set to make his Commonwealth Games debut as India's rising triple jump star prepares for Glasgow 2026.

At just 21 years of age, Selva Prabhu has already built an impressive résumé that includes a World U20 silver medal, an NCAA title, and a place among India's most promising field athletes.

Now, the young triple jumper is preparing for another defining moment in his career as he gears up to make his senior Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2026.

Representing India at one of the world's premier multi-sport events is a dream realised for the Tamil Nadu athlete, who has steadily climbed the ranks through consistent performances at both the junior and collegiate levels. While Glasgow will be his first appearance at a senior Commonwealth Games, Selva arrives with valuable international experience and the confidence gained from competing against some of the world's best athletes.

As India's athletics contingent prepares for the Games, the youngster is focused on producing his best performance rather than getting carried away by the occasion.

For Selva, wearing the Indian jersey at a senior multi-sport Games represents the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. The opportunity to compete for India on one of athletics' biggest stages is something he has aspired to since his early days in the sport.

"It's a huge honour to represent India at my first senior multi-sport Games," Selva said. "I've dreamed about wearing the Indian jersey on a stage like this for many years. I'm proud to have this opportunity, and my goal is to give my best, make my country proud, and gain valuable experience competing against some of the world's best athletes."

His journey to Glasgow has been built on steady progression rather than overnight success, with each season bringing new milestones and greater international exposure.

One of the biggest influences on Selva's development has been his time competing in the highly competitive National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) circuit in the United States. The NCAA has become one of the strongest pathways for young athletes aspiring to compete at the highest international level, offering world-class coaching, sports science support and regular competition against elite talent.

For Selva, those years have transformed him both technically and mentally.

"Competing in the NCAA has helped me grow in every aspect," he explained. "The level of competition is very high, so it pushed me to improve technically, physically, and mentally. Training with great coaches and competing against world-class athletes every week has made me more confident and prepared for international competitions."

The exposure to consistent high-quality competition has allowed the young Indian jumper to refine his technique while learning how to deliver under pressure—an experience that could prove invaluable in Glasgow.

As the Commonwealth Games approach, Selva's preparations have centred on perfecting the technical aspects of triple jump. Unlike many athletic events, triple jump demands an intricate balance between speed, rhythm, strength and precise execution across the hop, step and jump phases. Rather than chasing major technical changes, Selva and his coaching team have focused on consistency.

"My main focus has been improving my speed, consistency and technique," he said. "Triple jump is all about putting everything together on the day. My coach and I have worked hard on maintaining rhythm throughout the approach and phases, while also making sure I'm physically strong and healthy."

Maintaining consistency has become increasingly important as the global standard in men's triple jump continues to rise, leaving little room for technical errors during major championships.

The men's triple jump field at the Commonwealth Games promises to be one of the most competitive in recent years. Rather than focusing on the strength of the opposition, however, Selva is concentrating on executing his own jumps to the best of his ability. "The competition is very strong, which motivates me even more," he said. "My goal is to perform at my best and compete with confidence. If I execute my jumps well, I know I can produce a good result."

The youngster believes a performance close to or even beyond his personal best would represent a successful debut. "A performance close to my personal best or better, while giving everything I have, would leave me satisfied."

That mindset reflects the maturity of an athlete who understands that international success often begins with delivering consistent performances rather than becoming overwhelmed by expectations.

Backed by the Inspire Institute of Sport

Selva also acknowledged the significant role played by the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in his development. India's premier high-performance training centre has become an important hub for elite athletes across multiple disciplines, providing access to world-class coaching, sports science, recovery facilities and performance analysis.

"IIS has been a big part of my journey," Selva said. "They've supported me with training, sports science, recovery and overall athlete development. Their belief in me has allowed me to focus on improving every day."

He added that he hopes to repay that trust with strong performances on the international stage. "I'm grateful for their support, and I hope to repay that trust with strong performances for India."

Selva Prabhu's rise reflects the growing strength of India's field events, an area that has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years through athletes like Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar and Praveen Chithravel.

His combination of international age-group success, NCAA experience and continued technical development makes him one of the country's most exciting young prospects heading into Glasgow. While the Commonwealth Games debut will undoubtedly be an important milestone, it also represents another step towards even bigger goals, including future World Championships and Olympic Games.

For Selva, Glasgow is not simply about participating—it is an opportunity to demonstrate that he belongs among the world's elite. If he can translate the consistency developed through years of training and competition into a strong performance on the Commonwealth stage, it could mark the beginning of another exciting chapter for one of Indian athletics' brightest emerging talents.
