Glasgow CWG 2026 Athletics Finals: A Day-by-Day Guide to India’s Biggest Medal Opportunities

The athletics competition has always been one of the biggest attractions at the Commonwealth Games, and Glasgow 2026 promises another week of world-class action featuring Olympic champions, world medallists and some of the finest athletes from across the Commonwealth.
For India, the athletics programme could once again play a defining role in the country's overall medal tally. With several Indian athletes entering Glasgow ranked among the season's best in their respective events, the finals schedule is packed with medal opportunities across track, jumps and throws.
While the exact timings for the sessions are yet to be officially confirmed, the finals are spread across six days, beginning on July 27 and concluding on August 1 at the EDF Scotstoun Stadium.
Here's a closer look at what Indian fans can expect each day.
July 27: High Jump and Hurdles Kick Off India's Medal Hunt
India's athletics campaign begins with two events that could immediately produce podium finishes.
The Men's High Jump Final will feature one of India's strongest medal contenders in Sarvesh Kushare, who enters the Games after an impressive season. Kushare has consistently cleared heights that place him among the leading Commonwealth jumpers and will be aiming to convert that form into a medal. Joining him will be Aadarsh and decathlete Tejaswin Shankar, who could also add valuable points and experience in the event.
The evening will also feature the Men's 110m Hurdles Final, where Tejas Shirse will look to continue his breakthrough season. Having rewritten the Indian record and established himself among Asia's fastest hurdlers, Tejas heads into Glasgow as one of India's most realistic track medal hopes. A strong start and clean execution over the barriers could put him firmly in contention for the podium.
The second day presents another exciting opportunity for India. Pooja Singh will compete in the Women's High Jump Final, hoping to challenge for a place among the leading finishers against a strong Commonwealth field. Attention will then shift to one of India's biggest medal prospects on the track.
Gulveer Singh will line up in the men's 10,000m final, carrying outstanding form into the games. The national record holder has emerged as India's leading distance runner over the past two seasons and will be aiming to secure a historic medal in an event traditionally dominated by athletes from Kenya and Australia.
The day's programme also includes the prestigious Men's 100m Final, where Gurindervir Singh could become one of the first Indians in recent years to feature in a Commonwealth sprint final.
Day Three could prove to be one of India's busiest and most successful days in athletics. The spotlight will naturally fall on the Men's Long Jump Final, where Murali Sreeshankar enters as one of the favourites after returning to top form following injury. One of India's biggest gold medal hopes, Sreeshankar has consistently crossed the eight-metre mark and possesses the experience required to deliver on the biggest stage.
Alongside him, Lokesh Sarthyanathan will also be in action, giving India two genuine contenders in the event. The Women's Shot Put Final will see Manpreet Kaur representing India, while Parul Chaudhary returns to the track for the Women's 3000m Steeplechase Final.
Parul has transformed Indian distance running in recent years and will be hoping to challenge for a medal despite facing strong competition from African athletes.
July 30: Throws Take Centre Stage
The fourth day belongs to India's throwers. Former Commonwealth champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor returns for the Men's Shot Put Final, accompanied by Samardeep Singh. While Toor faces a stronger field than in previous editions, his championship experience makes him a dangerous competitor capable of producing big throws under pressure. In the Women's Discus Throw Final, India will be represented by Seema Punia and Nidhi Rani, two athletes capable of pushing for top-five finishes if they reproduce their season-best performances.
The evening concludes with the Women's 5000m Final, where Parul Chaudhary returns for her second event of the Games. Competing in both the steeplechase and 5000m highlights Parul's versatility and endurance, and another strong finish would cap an impressive championship.
Few sessions at Glasgow 2026 will attract more Indian attention than July 31. The headline event is undoubtedly the Men's Javelin Throw Final, featuring Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra. Although Neeraj enters Glasgow against strong opposition, major championships have repeatedly shown his ability to deliver when it matters most.
Joining him are Rohit Yadav, who has developed into a genuine medal contender after a series of impressive performances this season, and Yashvir Singh, giving India three representatives in one of the marquee events of the Games. The Men's Decathlon also reaches its conclusion with the traditional 1500m, where Tejaswin Shankar will complete two demanding days of competition.
Track fans will have plenty to enjoy as well.
Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh Kumar are expected to feature in the Men's 400m Hurdles Final, while national record holder Animesh Kujur will aim to make his mark in the Men's 200m Final after an exceptional season.
The final day of athletics promises to be one of the busiest. India's triple jump strength will be on full display through Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu, both of whom enter the Men's Triple Jump Final with realistic medal ambitions. In the Women's 10,000m Race Walk Final, Priyanka Goswami and Ravina will carry India's hopes in an event where experience often proves decisive.
The one-lap events will also conclude with Indian representation in both the Men's 400m Final through Vishal TK and Rajesh Ramesh, and the Women's 400m Final, where Rashdeep Kaur, Neeru Pathak, and veteran Ansa Baby could all be in contention.
The evening session offers another set of exciting opportunities. Kuldeep Kumar and Dev Meena will compete in the Men's Pole Vault Final, while Gulveer Singh returns for his second distance event in the Men's 5000m Final, aiming to complete a remarkable championship.
The athletics programme concludes with the Mixed 4x400m Relay Final, an event in which India has steadily improved in recent years and will hope to finish the Games on a high.
From Neeraj Chopra's quest for another Commonwealth title to Murali Sreeshankar's long jump ambitions and Gulveer Singh's historic double challenge, India's athletics team enters Glasgow with one of its strongest-ever squads. The six-day finals programme features medal opportunities across virtually every discipline—sprints, hurdles, middle-distance running, jumps, throws, combined events and relays.
If India's leading athletes perform to their potential, Glasgow 2026 could become another milestone in the country's athletics journey, with several national stars expected to compete for medals and a new generation ready to announce itself on one of the biggest stages in Commonwealth sport.
