Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for Diamond League Final, Set for Another Showdown with Rumesh Pathirage

Neeraj Chopra has qualified for the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where the Indian javelin star will once again have an opportunity to challenge Sri Lanka’s in-form Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and compete for one of the biggest titles of the athletics season.

Chopra secured his place in the season-ending final after accumulating enough qualification points from his two Diamond League appearances in 2026. The two-time Olympic medallist finished fourth in Doha and second in Lausanne, earning a total of 12 points to book his spot among the elite throwers competing in Brussels.

The Diamond League Final will be held on September 4 and 5 and will provide Chopra with another major opportunity to add to his impressive record in the prestigious competition. The Indian had previously created history in 2022 by becoming the first Indian athlete to win the Diamond League title. Since then, he has finished runner-up three times and will now aim to reclaim the crown.

Chopra began his 2026 Diamond League campaign at the Doha meeting on June 19. In his first appearance of the season on the circuit, he produced a best throw of 85.69m to finish fourth. The performance earned him five qualification points, but it also left the Indian needing a stronger result in his next outing to remain firmly in contention for the final.

That improvement came in Lausanne on August 21. Chopra returned to action with a much stronger display, producing his best throw of the season with an effort of 88.05m. The Indian finished second at the meeting, with Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage taking the top spot.

The 88.05m throw proved crucial for Chopra’s qualification campaign. His runner-up finish earned him seven more points, taking his total to 12 from his two appearances. With the qualification race taking shape across the Diamond League meetings, those points were enough to secure his place in Brussels.

Chopra did not compete at the Zurich Diamond League meeting on August 27, despite the men’s javelin event being part of the programme. However, the results in Zurich further highlighted the level of competition awaiting him at the season-ending final.

Pathirage continued his remarkable season by producing a massive 92.07m throw to win the Zurich Diamond League. The Sri Lankan currently leads the javelin standings and has emerged as one of the biggest challengers to Chopra in 2026.

The Brussels final is therefore expected to produce another fascinating contest between the two Asian stars. Pathirage has had the upper hand in their meetings this season, defeating Chopra on three occasions, including at the Commonwealth Games and the Lausanne Diamond League. Chopra had won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 85.83m before improving to 88.05m in Lausanne.

While Pathirage has enjoyed an outstanding run of form, Chopra’s gradual improvement makes the upcoming final particularly significant. The Indian’s season-best performance in Lausanne showed that he is finding greater rhythm at the right time of the season.

The Diamond League Final will also feature several other major names from the men’s javelin world. Anderson Peters, Keshorn Walcott and Curtis Thompson are among the leading athletes expected to be in contention, ensuring that the battle for the title will not simply be a two-man contest.

Kenya’s experienced Julius Yego was also involved in the qualification race. Entering the Zurich meeting with nine points, Yego finished fifth with a best throw of 81.66m and added four more points to take his total to 13.

The Diamond League is contested across a 14-meeting series between May and September, with athletes collecting points based on their finishing positions during the qualification phase. Eight points are awarded for victory, followed by seven for second place, six for third, five for fourth and so on until eighth place.

However, qualification points do not carry over to determine the final winner. Once athletes reach the season-ending event, the focus shifts entirely to producing the best performance on the day.

For Chopra, Brussels represents more than just another Diamond League appearance. It is an opportunity to return to the top of the podium at a competition where he has already made history, while also testing himself against the strongest javelin field of the season.

The final could also serve as an important indicator of form heading into the next major championship challenges. Pathirage’s 92.07m in Zurich has raised the benchmark considerably, but Chopra’s 88.05m season-best suggests he remains firmly in the fight.
