Global Chess League Launches Road2GCL Ahead of Season 4, Expanding Chess Beyond the Tournament

The Global Chess League (GCL) has announced the return of Road2GCL, a six-week community engagement initiative designed to build excitement ahead of Season 4, which will be held in Bengaluru from September 3 to 14.
Unveiled on the occasion of World Chess Day, the initiative aims to connect players, schools, clubs, creators and chess enthusiasts through a series of competitions, grassroots events and digital collaborations before the tournament begins.
Organised by the Global Chess League, a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, Road2GCL reflects the league's ambition to make chess more accessible and engaging beyond the competitive arena. Rather than limiting fan interaction to the tournament itself, the initiative extends the experience into communities, educational institutions and online platforms, encouraging greater participation from players of all ages and skill levels.
With Season 4 expected to feature one of the strongest line-ups in franchise chess, Road2GCL serves as the perfect lead-up to another highly anticipated edition of the league.
The centrepiece of this year's initiative is Road2GCL Contenders, a competition designed to provide aspiring chess players with an opportunity to compete against some of the biggest names in world chess. The tournament will follow a multi-stage qualification process before culminating in a special showdown featuring Global Chess League stars. The format creates a unique pathway for emerging players to test themselves against elite competition while gaining valuable exposure on an international stage.
The inaugural edition proved to be a major success, with Jose Martinez winning the Open category, Woman Grandmaster Mai Narva emerging victorious in the Women's division, and teenage sensation International Master Faustino Oro claiming the Under-21 title.
This year's edition is expected to attract an even wider pool of participants as chess continues to experience unprecedented global growth.
Road2GCL extends beyond competitive tournaments by placing a strong emphasis on community participation. Through the Shining Stars initiative, the league will organise chess activities across clubs and educational institutions, encouraging young players to experience the game in an interactive environment. These grassroots programmes are aimed at nurturing interest in chess while strengthening local chess communities.
In addition, Road2GCL Creators will bring together digital content creators to produce engaging chess-related content in the lead-up to the tournament. By combining over-the-board events with online storytelling, the initiative hopes to introduce chess to newer audiences and showcase the excitement surrounding Season 4.
The multi-platform approach reflects the changing landscape of sports consumption, where digital engagement plays an increasingly important role in building fan communities.
Speaking about the launch, Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, emphasised that the league's vision extends beyond hosting a world-class tournament. He noted that the objective is to create opportunities for people from different backgrounds and varying skill levels to engage with chess, interact with the broader community and become part of the journey leading to Season 4.
According to Rakshit, initiatives such as Road2GCL play an important role in making chess more participative, culturally relevant and accessible while supporting the continued growth of the sport worldwide.
His comments underline the Global Chess League's broader mission of transforming chess into a year-round sporting and entertainment property rather than a standalone competition.
Season 4 Set to Feature Star-Studded Line-up
Road2GCL also builds anticipation for what promises to be another blockbuster edition of the Global Chess League. Season 4 will once again feature 36 of the world's leading grandmasters representing six franchises in the unique mixed-team format that has become the hallmark of the competition. One of the biggest attractions will be the return of World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, who is set to compete in India for the first time as part of the Global Chess League.
Carlsen's participation is expected to be one of the defining highlights of the tournament, drawing significant global attention to Bengaluru.
Adding further excitement is the inclusion of Divya Deshmukh, the reigning FIDE Women's World Cup champion, who will make her much-awaited Global Chess League debut.
Her arrival strengthens an already formidable field and further enhances India's representation in one of the strongest franchise chess competitions in the world.
Since its inception, the Global Chess League has consistently introduced innovations aimed at modernising the presentation of chess. The league pioneered a mixed-team franchise format, where male and female Grandmasters compete together, creating a unique competitive structure rarely seen in professional sport.
Other innovations, including the Icon Board, simultaneous team battles and rapid-format matches, have helped transform chess into a more television-friendly and spectator-focused product. By integrating technology, storytelling and franchise-based competition, the league has successfully attracted audiences beyond traditional chess followers.
Road2GCL builds upon this philosophy by ensuring that engagement begins weeks before the opening round, allowing fans to become active participants in the journey to the tournament.
As chess continues to enjoy growing popularity worldwide, initiatives such as Road2GCL demonstrate how the sport is evolving beyond conventional tournaments. The combination of grassroots programmes, competitive opportunities and creator-led engagement creates multiple entry points for aspiring players and new fans alike. With Bengaluru preparing to host another edition of the Global Chess League, Road2GCL ensures that the excitement starts well before the first move is played.
Featuring global icons like Magnus Carlsen, emerging stars such as Divya Deshmukh, and opportunities for aspiring players to earn their place on the biggest stage, the initiative reinforces the league's commitment to making chess more inclusive, innovative and engaging. As Season 4 approaches, Road2GCL is set to connect communities across the world, proving that the journey to the board can be just as compelling as the competition itself.
