HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades made it two wins from two matches in Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7, edging out PBG Pune Jaguars 8-7 in a thrilling contest at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Friday.

The tie went right down to the final match before 19-year-old Taneesha Kotecha produced a composed performance to defeat India's top-ranked women's paddler Diya Chitale, sealing a narrow victory for Kolkata and maintaining the team's unbeaten start to the season. With contributions from both experienced international stars and promising Indian talent, the ThunderBlades showcased their squad depth and resilience in one of the closest contests of the tournament so far.

With the overall tie locked at 6-6, the final women's singles match became the decider. Standing between Kolkata and victory was teenage sensation Taneesha Kotecha, who faced the much-fancied Diya Chitale, one of India's leading players and currently ranked World No. 77. Despite the pressure of the occasion, Taneesha showed remarkable maturity.

She dominated the opening game 11-7, using aggressive attacks and confident shot-making to unsettle Chitale. The Kolkata youngster elevated her performance further in the second game, racing to an emphatic 11-2 victory that placed the ThunderBlades on the verge of winning the tie. Chitale attempted a late comeback by taking the third game 11-9, but under UTT's scoring system, Taneesha's 2-1 victory had already given Kolkata the decisive edge.

Her performance not only secured the overall result but also highlighted the emergence of another exciting young Indian talent capable of delivering in high-pressure situations.

The Jaguars had earlier taken the initiative through Snehit SFR, who opened the evening with a hard-fought victory over Ankur Bhattacharjee in the men's singles. Snehit controlled the first two games brilliantly, winning 11-9 and 11-4 with a combination of attacking play and consistency. Although Ankur responded strongly by taking the third game 11-5, Snehit's 2-1 victory handed Pune the early advantage in the tie.

Zeng Jian Levels the Contest

Kolkata responded immediately through Singapore international Zeng Jian. Facing France's Prithika Pavade, Zeng produced a composed display to level the overall tie.

She comfortably claimed the opening two games 11-6 and 11-7, using her superior control in rallies to dictate the pace of the contest. Prithika avoided a straight-games defeat by winning the third game 11-8, but Zeng's overall 2-1 victory restored parity and shifted momentum back towards the ThunderBlades. Her experience once again proved invaluable in an evenly matched encounter.

The mixed doubles proved to be another crucial moment in the tie. The Kolkata pairing of Eduard Ionescu and Ayhika Mukherjee recovered impressively after losing the opening game to Snehit SFR and Prithika Pavade. Having dropped the first game 7-11, the ThunderBlades duo regrouped to edge a dramatic second game 11-10 before carrying that momentum into the decider, which they won 11-6.

The comeback victory handed Kolkata a valuable lead and demonstrated the strong chemistry between Ionescu and Ayhika.

PBG Pune Jaguars refused to let the contest slip away. Egyptian star Omar Assar produced one of the standout performances of the evening against Romania's Eduard Ionescu in the second men's singles. After losing the opening game 5-11, Assar completely turned the match around.

The experienced Egyptian controlled the next two games with powerful attacking play, winning 11-6 and 11-4 to complete an impressive comeback. His victory levelled the overall score at 6-6, setting up the dramatic final showdown between Taneesha and Diya.

Although Taneesha's victory ultimately decided the tie, Kolkata's success was built on collective contributions across the lineup. Zeng Jian's victory in the women's singles prevented Pune from building early momentum, while Ayhika Mukherjee and Eduard Ionescu delivered at a crucial stage in the mixed doubles. Even in defeat, Ankur Bhattacharjee and Eduard Ionescu ensured Kolkata collected valuable games, which ultimately proved significant in the overall scoring system.

The ThunderBlades once again demonstrated why they are considered one of the league's most balanced teams, combining experienced international campaigners with emerging Indian talent.

The victory extends Kolkata's unbeaten record after two ties, following another narrow win in their opening fixture. Earlier in the day, the franchise's junior team also continued its excellent form in the Dream UTT Juniors competition, defeating Ahmedabad APL Pipers 5-4. The consistent performances across both senior and junior competitions reflect the strength of the ThunderBlades' overall programme.

The ThunderBlades now turn their attention to Saturday's blockbuster clash against Dabang Delhi TTC, another team that opened its campaign with victory after defeating UP Prometheans 9-6. Delhi will arrive with momentum following outstanding performances from Maria Xiao and G Sathiyan, setting up one of the most anticipated encounters of the opening week.

For Kolkata, confidence will be high after overcoming two difficult opponents in succession. Taneesha Kotecha's breakthrough performance, combined with the consistency of experienced players like Zeng Jian, Ayhika Mukherjee, and Eduard Ionescu, gives the ThunderBlades every reason to believe they can continue their unbeaten run. With Butterfly UTT Season 7 already producing several thrilling finishes, Kolkata has established itself as an early contender for the playoffs.

Their ability to win tight contests, rely on multiple match-winners, and trust young players in decisive moments could prove invaluable as the competition progresses.
