India Assured of Strong Finish at WTT Contender Lagos 2026 as Diya Chitale-Manush Shah Reach Mixed Doubles Final

India’s table tennis contingent produced one of its strongest collective performances of the season at the WTT Contender Lagos 2026, with multiple players making deep runs across singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories in Nigeria.
Leading the charge was the mixed doubles pair of Manush Shah and Diya Chitale, who stormed into the final with a commanding straight-games victory over Canada’s Ly Edward and Mo Zhang. The Indian duo won 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 to secure their place in the title clash, where they will face the French combination of Leo De Nodrest and Camille Lutz.
The run to the final further underlined the growing chemistry between Manush and Diya, who entered the tournament as the top seeds and consistently looked among the strongest pairs in the draw. Their semifinal victory showcased both tactical maturity and composure under pressure. While the first two games were largely controlled by the Indians, the third game turned into a tense battle before the pair closed it out in straight sets.
For Indian table tennis, the achievement is another encouraging sign ahead of a packed international calendar that includes major continental and world-level events later this year.
The mixed doubles campaign had already gained momentum earlier when the Indian top seeds defeated a Japanese pair 3-1 in the quarterfinals to enter the semifinals. Throughout the event, Manush and Diya looked sharp in transitions and aggressive in attack, particularly during crucial points.
The final against the French pair promises to be a major challenge, especially with Camille Lutz also enjoying a strong singles tournament in Lagos. Diya Chitale herself has been one of the standout performers of the competition.
The young Indian paddler produced a remarkable comeback victory against France’s Camille Lutz in the women’s singles category to book her place in the quarterfinals. Though details of the scoreline reflected a closely fought encounter, what stood out most was Diya’s ability to recover from difficult situations and maintain composure during pressure moments. Her fighting spirit throughout the tournament has drawn significant praise.
Diya’s success in Lagos also highlights her growing confidence at the senior international level. Over the last two years, she has steadily emerged as one of India’s brightest young table tennis talents, capable of competing strongly against experienced international opponents.
Meanwhile, Ayhika Mukherjee delivered arguably the most dominant Indian singles performance of the tournament. The World No. 105 stunned Canada’s World No. 56 Mo Zhang in straight games during the Round of 16, winning 11-2, 11-4, 12-10 in a completely commanding display.
The margin of the victory surprised many observers because of how comprehensively Ayhika controlled the match from the opening points. Her disruptive style and aggressive shot-making repeatedly troubled the Canadian paddler, especially during the first two games where Zhang struggled to find any rhythm. Ayhika’s performance once again highlighted why she remains one of India’s most dangerous players against higher-ranked opponents.
India’s strong showing extended well beyond mixed doubles and singles.
In women’s doubles, both Ayhika Mukherjee-Sutirtha Mukherjee and the pairing of Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale progressed to the semifinals, ensuring a significant Indian presence deep into the draw. The consistent performances across categories reflected the overall depth Indian table tennis currently possesses on the international circuit.
The men’s doubles category also saw India challenge strongly, with Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah advancing to the semifinals after another impressive campaign. Across singles competitions too, Indian players consistently remained in contention. Manav Thakkar, Manush Shah, Diya Chitale and Ayhika Mukherjee all reached the singles quarterfinals, showcasing the balance and competitiveness of the Indian squad across both men’s and women’s events.
For Indian table tennis, the Lagos campaign comes at an important time.
The country has been trying to build greater consistency on the global stage beyond occasional breakthrough performances. Events like WTT Contender tournaments provide critical ranking points and exposure against international opposition, particularly for younger players transitioning into senior competition.
In Lagos, the Indian contingent looked confident, composed and tactically mature across multiple formats. The rise of combinations like Manush Shah and Diya Chitale in mixed doubles is particularly significant because mixed doubles continues to grow in importance globally, especially with its Olympic relevance.
Similarly, the performances of Ayhika and Diya in singles indicate that India’s women paddlers are becoming increasingly capable of challenging higher-ranked international opponents consistently.
As the tournament heads into its final stages, all eyes will now be on the mixed doubles final.
India already leaves Lagos with several positives, but a title victory for Diya Chitale and Manush Shah would cap off a memorable week for Indian table tennis in Nigeria.
