India Blow 13-Point Lead as Qatar Seal Comeback Win in FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers

India's hopes of qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 officially came to an end after a heartbreaking 65-56 defeat to Qatar in their Group D clash at the Veer Savarkar Indoor Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Despite leading for more than 30 minutes and building a commanding 13-point advantage during the second quarter, the hosts were unable to withstand Qatar's second-half resurgence. The visitors produced a composed finish to claim their fifth straight victory over India in the qualifying campaign and leave the home side rooted to the bottom of Group D with five defeats from five matches.
The result officially eliminates India from World Cup qualification contention, while Qatar strengthened their position heading into the final group fixtures.
The hosts made an energetic start, with Harsh Dagar opening the scoring with a three-pointer as India quickly established a 5-0 lead. India's defensive intensity limited Qatar's offensive rhythm during the opening quarter, allowing the home side to take a 12-7 advantage after the first ten minutes. The momentum continued into the second quarter as India enjoyed their best spell of the game. Led by Pranav Prince, who scored eight points in the period, including two three-pointers, the hosts controlled both ends of the floor.
An impressive 8-0 run midway through the quarter extended India's lead from 16-13 to 24-13. Harsh Dagar contributed five points during the burst, helping India build confidence against a Qatar side that struggled to find offensive consistency. With just over a minute remaining before halftime, India stretched the lead to its largest margin of the contest at 30-17 before eventually taking a healthy 30-22 advantage into the break.
At that stage, India appeared firmly in control.
The momentum shifted immediately after halftime. Qatar started the third quarter with renewed intensity, producing a 7-0 run that cut India's lead from 30-17 to 30-24. Abdulrahman Mohamed Saad led the revival with four quick points, while Moustapha Ndao added three points from the free-throw line. Although India managed to maintain a narrow lead through much of the third quarter, Qatar steadily increased the defensive pressure and began forcing difficult shots.
For the first time in the game, the visitors outscored India in a quarter, reducing the deficit to just 44-42 heading into the final ten minutes. The contest had completely changed.
The decisive turning point arrived with 6:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. With India holding a slender 49-48 lead, Abdulrahman Mohamed Saad knocked down a turnaround jumper to give Qatar a 50-49 advantage, their first lead since the opening minutes of the contest. It proved to be the defining basket of the game.
Between the 7:50 and 5:06 marks of the final quarter, Qatar outscored India 6-3, converting three of their four field-goal attempts while committing no turnovers. India, in contrast, managed just one basket during the same stretch and surrendered a costly turnover. Over the final 4:15 of crunch time, Qatar completely controlled proceedings, outscoring India 9-4. The visitors remained perfect from the free-throw line, converting all four attempts, while India failed to make any of their five three-point attempts during the closing stages.
The composure shown by Qatar in the final minutes ultimately proved decisive.
Abdulrahman Mohamed Saad produced a match-winning performance, finishing with a game-high 24 points in just over 29 minutes. He converted 11 of his 25 field-goal attempts and delivered the lead-changing basket that sparked Qatar's winning run. Moustafa Fouda provided valuable support with 17 points, shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line while committing no turnovers. Inside the paint, Bobo Magassa dominated defensively with 13 rebounds, two steals and a block while recording the best plus-minus (+13) among all players.
India's standout performer was Pranav Prince, who delivered an outstanding all-round display despite the loss. The forward finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, one steal and five blocks, while shooting an efficient 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. His performance earned the highest efficiency rating of any player in the game. Harsh Dagar also contributed 13 points, including his strong opening-quarter shooting that helped India establish early control. However, India's offensive rhythm disappeared in the second half as Qatar tightened defensively and dominated the closing exchanges.
Ranked 76th in the world, India entered the game knowing victory was essential to keep their qualification hopes alive. Instead, the defeat leaves them winless after five Group D matches, having also lost twice to Qatar during the qualification campaign. India are grouped alongside Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Asian Qualifiers, with only the leading teams progressing further in the race to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. While qualification is now mathematically impossible, India still have one fixture remaining against world No. 33 Lebanon in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
The match will provide an opportunity for the young Indian squad to end the campaign on a positive note, even as they begin shifting focus towards future continental competitions and the next World Cup qualification cycle.
