India U18 Girls Begin FIBA U18 Asia Cup Division B Campaign with Two Dominant Wins, Set Up Indonesia Showdown

India's U18 girls' basketball team has made a dream start to its FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup Division B campaign, registering two emphatic victories to establish itself as one of the strongest contenders for promotion back to Division A.
After opening the tournament with a commanding 106-62 victory over hosts Thailand, the Indian youngsters followed it up with an even more dominant 99-17 win over Oman, setting up a decisive clash against Indonesia for top spot in Group A.
With the group winner earning a direct place in the semifinals, Tuesday's encounter promises to be India's biggest challenge of the tournament so far.
India wasted little time in announcing its intentions at the tournament, producing a clinical display against host nation Thailand in the opening game. The Indian side gradually took control during the opening quarter before completely taking over the contest with a superb second period. A 30-point second quarter helped India build a commanding 56-26 halftime lead, effectively ending the contest before the break.
The victory highlighted India's superiority on both ends of the floor.
Five Indian players scored in double figures, showcasing the team's balanced offensive approach.
J. Viha Reddy led the scoring with 17 points, while also contributing five steals and finishing with an impressive 22 efficiency rating. Her aggressive defence and timely shooting played a major role in helping India pull away during the first half. Nethra Birudavolu came close to a double-double with 15 points and eight assists, orchestrating the Indian offence brilliantly throughout the contest.
Aditi Subramanian also scored 15 points, while Vaishnavi Pardeshi and Tarannum Begum chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
India's victory over Thailand was built as much on defence as offence. The team forced the hosts into 36 turnovers, recording an outstanding 26 steals and converting those defensive stops into 29 points. Their aggressive full-court pressure disrupted Thailand's rhythm throughout the game, while India's superior height and athleticism made scoring difficult for the hosts.
The Indians also impressed with their ball movement, finishing with 29 assists and shooting an outstanding 57.1 percent from the field, reflecting both their efficiency and unselfish style of play.
Thailand simply had no answer to India's relentless pace and defensive intensity.
If the victory over Thailand demonstrated India's quality, the performance against Oman highlighted their consistency. The Indian girls completely dominated proceedings, cruising to a 99-17 victory in their second group-stage encounter. Once again, different players stepped forward to contribute, underlining the depth available within the squad.
This time it was Taarushee Tarun who led the scoring charts, finishing with an impressive 23 points as India overwhelmed Oman from the opening whistle. The one-sided scoreline reflected India's control across every aspect of the game, with the team comfortably securing its second consecutive victory to remain unbeaten in the tournament.
Having scored 205 points while conceding just 79 across their opening two matches, India has already established one of the strongest points differentials in Division B.
The FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup Division B carries significant importance for India's young basketball players. Having been relegated from Division A in 2022, India entered this year's competition determined to earn promotion back to Asia's top division. The tournament features emerging basketball nations from across the continent, with promotion representing the primary objective. India's performances so far suggest the team is firmly on course to challenge for that goal.
The combination of strong defence, efficient offence and impressive squad depth has made them one of the standout teams in the early stages of the competition.
India's next challenge will come against Indonesia, who have also enjoyed a dominant start to the tournament. Indonesia opened its campaign with a remarkable 127-6 victory over Oman, underlining its own title ambitions. The upcoming contest will therefore decide the Group A winners. Finishing on top carries significant importance, as the group winner advances directly to the semifinals, avoiding an additional knockout match and gaining extra recovery time.
For India, the encounter will also provide a clearer indication of where the team stands against one of Division B's strongest opponents.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of India's campaign has been the collective nature of its success. Against Thailand, five players scored in double figures. Against Oman, Taarushee Tarun stepped forward with a game-high 23 points. Rather than depending on one individual, India has consistently found contributions throughout the roster.
The team's ability to rotate players without any noticeable drop in performance bodes well for the more demanding knockout stages. Coach and support staff will also be encouraged by the defensive commitment shown by every player, an essential ingredient for success in international tournaments.
Winning the opening two matches in convincing fashion has provided India with valuable momentum heading into the tournament's defining stages. The victories have also allowed the coaching staff to rotate the squad effectively while maintaining a high level of performance. With confidence growing and the players adapting quickly to tournament conditions, India now finds itself in an excellent position to challenge for promotion.
However, the clash against Indonesia will represent the team's toughest examination so far. Victory would send India directly into the semifinals and move the young side one step closer to returning to Division A, where the country's basketball programme ultimately aims to compete.
After two dominant performances, India has already established itself as one of the favourites in Division B. The next challenge is to maintain that momentum against Indonesia and continue the journey back to Asia's top tier.
