India Storm into FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup Division B Semi-finals with Dominant Win Over Indonesia

The Indian U18 Women's Basketball Team continued its impressive run at the FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup 2026 Division B, defeating Indonesia 79-46 to finish unbeaten in Group A and secure a direct berth in the semi-finals.
Heading into the contest, both India and Indonesia had won their opening two matches, making Wednesday's clash a virtual group final with the winner earning automatic qualification for the last four. India rose to the occasion in emphatic fashion, producing another dominant team performance to complete a clean sweep of the group stage and strengthen their credentials as one of the favourites for promotion.
The victory means India will now face the winner of the qualification game between Kazakhstan and Samoa in the semi-finals, while Indonesia, after finishing second in the group, will take on Samoa in the qualification round.
Indonesia entered the contest full of confidence after convincing victories over Thailand and Oman, with their balanced offence and aggressive rebounding making them one of the standout teams in the tournament. However, India quickly demonstrated why they have emerged as one of the strongest sides in Division B.
The Indian team raced into a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter, immediately putting pressure on Indonesia's defence. Although Indonesia managed to reduce the deficit at times during the opening half, India maintained control through disciplined defence and efficient ball movement.
The contest remained competitive until halftime, but India produced its best basketball after the break to completely take the game away from the Southeast Asian side.
The turning point came in the third quarter. With the scores still within reach, India's attacking unit shifted gears, delivering a 19-point quarter that effectively ended Indonesia's hopes of a comeback. Excellent transition play, aggressive defence and consistent shooting allowed India to stretch the advantage to 52-35 entering the final quarter.
Once momentum swung firmly in India's favour, there was no way back for Indonesia. India continued to dominate both ends of the floor during the final period, eventually sealing a comprehensive 79-46 victory.
The convincing margin reflected India's superiority throughout the contest and highlighted the team's growing confidence as the tournament progresses.
One of the biggest positives for India was the contribution from multiple players. Rather than relying on a single scorer, the team once again showcased its depth with four players finishing in double figures. Viha Jonnalagadda and Mahek Sharma led the scoring with 15 points each while also combining for 15 rebounds, providing India with a strong presence at both ends of the court.
Taarushee Tarun continued her impressive tournament, contributing 14 points and five rebounds, while consistently creating scoring opportunities during India's decisive third-quarter surge.
Point guard Vaishnavi Prashant Pardeshi orchestrated the offence brilliantly, finishing with 11 points and an outstanding nine assists. Her court vision and ability to distribute the ball played a key role in India's fluid attacking performance. Overall, India recorded 25 assists, underlining the team's emphasis on collective basketball rather than individual brilliance.
While India's offence received deserved praise, it was the team's defensive discipline that laid the foundation for victory. The Indian players restricted Indonesia's usually free-flowing attack to just 46 points, significantly below the scoring output they had produced in their previous victories. By applying relentless pressure on the ball and contesting every possession, India forced Indonesia into difficult shots while limiting second-chance opportunities.
The defensive intensity remained consistent throughout all four quarters, allowing the offence to capitalise on turnovers and convert them into fast-break points. Such all-round performances have become a defining feature of India's campaign.
India now advances to the semi-finals with an unblemished 3-0 record, having defeated Oman, Thailand and Indonesia. The victories have showcased different strengths of the team.
Against Oman, India demonstrated their attacking firepower. Their performance against Thailand highlighted consistency, while the win over Indonesia proved the team's ability to deliver under pressure against another unbeaten side. Finishing at the top of Group A also allows India to bypass the qualification round, providing valuable additional recovery time before the knockout stage.
The FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup Division B carries significant importance because the tournament champion earns promotion to Division A, where Asia's strongest basketball nations compete. India has consistently been among the stronger teams in Division B and entered this tournament with the clear objective of returning to the top division.
Their performances so far suggest that goal is well within reach. The combination of disciplined defence, balanced scoring and excellent teamwork has made India one of the most complete teams in the competition. With multiple players capable of stepping up in crucial moments, the squad appears well-equipped for the challenges that lie ahead.
India will now await the winner of the qualification game between Kazakhstan and Samoa, with a place in the final at stake. Regardless of the opponent, the semi-final is expected to be India's toughest test of the tournament so far. However, confidence within the camp will be high after an unbeaten group-stage campaign that featured three convincing victories.
The performances of Viha Jonnalagadda, Mahek Sharma, Taarushee Tarun and Vaishnavi Pardeshi have provided strong foundations, while the team's collective approach continues to set them apart.
With promotion to Division A now just two victories away, India has firmly established itself as one of the leading contenders for the title. If the team can replicate the discipline, intensity and teamwork displayed against Indonesia, it will head into the knockout rounds with genuine belief of lifting the championship trophy and returning to Asia's top tier.
