India's impressive campaign at the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships 2026 continued on Day 4 as the contingent added three more medals to its tally.

Distance runner Shivaji Parashuram secured a silver medal in the men's 10,000m, while Shravani Sangle and Priya Sheoran claimed bronze medals in the women's 400m hurdles and women's discus throw respectively. The trio produced memorable performances in their respective events, with both Shivaji and Shravani recording personal bests during another successful day for Indian athletics on the continental stage.

With medals coming across track and field disciplines, India's young athletes continue to demonstrate the country's growing depth ahead of the next Olympic cycle.

One of India's standout performers in Gumi has undoubtedly been Shivaji Parashuram. The long-distance runner added a second silver medal to his collection after finishing runner-up in the men's 10,000m final with a lifetime best of 29:33.54. The race developed into a thrilling contest between Shivaji and Japan's Yoshihiro Kusuoki, who eventually claimed the gold medal in 29:29.34. Shivaji remained in contention throughout the race before settling for silver, just over four seconds behind the winner.

China's Jinzhi Jiang completed the podium with a bronze medal after clocking 29:42.54.

The silver medal follows Shivaji's runner-up finish in the men's 5000m earlier in the championships, making him one of India's most successful athletes at the tournament. More importantly, his personal best performance reflects the steady progress he has made in recent seasons and strengthens India's prospects in distance running at the age-group level.

Shravani Sangle continued her excellent form by clinching bronze in the women's 400m hurdles. The 20-year-old clocked a lifetime best of 58.09 seconds, earning her second medal of the championships after playing a starring role in India's gold medal-winning Mixed 4x400m Relay earlier in the competition. In that relay final, Shravani produced one of the defining moments of India's campaign, delivering a sensational anchor leg to overhaul the Chinese runner in the closing metres and secure gold for the Indian quartet.

Her bronze medal in the individual event highlights her versatility and consistency across multiple disciplines. Recording a personal best in a continental final also underlines her ability to perform under pressure and signals her growing potential as one of India's brightest quarter-mile talents. Leaving the championships with both a gold and a bronze medal represents a significant achievement for the young athlete and further establishes her as an important prospect for Indian athletics.

Priya Sheoran Earns Discus Bronze

India's medal tally also received a boost in the field events through Priya Sheoran. Competing in the women's discus throw, Priya registered a best effort of 50.44 metres to secure the bronze medal. The event was dominated by the Chinese duo of Zhichao Jiang and Jingru Huang. Jiang comfortably won the gold medal with a throw of 58.63m, while compatriot Huang claimed silver after producing 55.33m.

Priya's consistent series ensured she finished third and delivered another podium finish for India.

Winning a medal against a strong field that included two Chinese throwers demonstrates her ability to compete at the highest level in Asia and provides further encouragement for Indian women's throwing events.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of India's performances on Day 4 was the number of athletes producing career-best marks. Both Shivaji Parashuram and Shravani Sangle achieved lifetime best performances while standing on the podium. Such performances indicate that Indian athletes are peaking at the right time during major championships rather than merely replicating previous results.

For a developing U23 squad, this is an important indicator of effective coaching, preparation and competition planning. Success at the continental level often serves as a stepping stone towards senior international championships, and performances like these provide confidence ahead of future events including the Asian Games and World Championships.

The inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships has become an important platform for identifying the next generation of Asian athletics stars. India has made full use of the opportunity, with athletes delivering medals across sprints, relays, middle-distance races, long-distance events and field competitions. Rather than relying on one or two standout performers, the Indian contingent has displayed impressive depth across multiple disciplines.

The performances also highlight the growing strength of India's athletics development programme, with several young athletes transitioning successfully from junior competitions to the U23 international stage.

With multiple medals already secured and several finals still to come, India heads into the closing stages of the championships carrying significant momentum. The country's athletes have consistently challenged for podium finishes throughout the competition, demonstrating both quality and resilience against Asia's strongest emerging talents.

Shivaji Parashuram's double silver, Shravani Sangle's gold-bronze combination, and Priya Sheoran's podium finish have added another memorable chapter to India's campaign. As the championships approach their conclusion, the Indian contingent will look to build on this momentum and further strengthen what has already been an impressive medal haul at the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships 2026.
