India's young athletics contingent concluded a memorable campaign at the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships 2026 with an impressive haul of 16 medals, finishing fourth in the overall standings and showcasing the country's growing depth across track and field events.

The Indian team returned home with three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals, capping off a week that saw several athletes produce personal bests, breakthrough performances, and maiden international podium finishes.

Only China and Japan finished ahead of India on the medal table, with China dominating the championships with 52 medals, while Japan claimed second place with 22 medals. India's fourth-place finish reflects the continued progress of its youth athletics programme and offers plenty of optimism ahead of future senior international competitions.

The relay events once again proved to be one of India's biggest strengths. The women's 4x400m relay quartet delivered a commanding performance to clinch the gold medal, stopping the clock at 3:33.62. Shravani Sangle gave India a solid start before Sandra Mol Sabu produced arguably the decisive leg of the race, pulling away from China's second runner over the final 100 metres. Pravallika and Nofisa maintained the advantage comfortably to secure India's third gold medal of the championships.

The performance becomes even more significant when compared to the senior national team, with the U23 quartet finishing just 0.81 seconds slower than India's senior season-best timing of 3:32.81.

The men's 4x400m relay team also impressed, claiming silver in 3:04.24. Astik Pradhan handed India an early lead with a superb opening leg before Megavarnam Sharan maintained the advantage. China eventually moved ahead during the third leg, but Aman Choudhary fought hard on the anchor leg to secure the silver medal ahead of Qatar.

India also celebrated a silver medal in the women's 4x100m relay, where Sanjana, Akshaya, Sudheeksha, and Shreeya Rajesh clocked 44.68 seconds to finish behind China.

The relay performances highlighted both the depth and quality emerging within Indian sprinting.

One of the defining moments of the championships came in the men's javelin throw. Anand Singh produced the performance of his career, throwing a personal best 80.57m to win the gold medal and become India's newest entrant into the prestigious 80-metre club. The throw represented his first time crossing the coveted mark and earned him his maiden international medal.

Equally impressive was the manner in which Anand achieved the milestone. After recording three consecutive personal bests during the domestic season, he delivered another career-best performance on the biggest stage of his young career. India also celebrated a bronze medal in the same event through Shivam, who threw 77.70m, giving the country a memorable double podium finish in the javelin competition.

The success further reinforces India's growing strength in the event that has become one of the country's strongest field disciplines. Distance runner Shivaji Parashuram emerged as one of India's standout performers by winning two silver medals. After finishing second in the men's 5000m earlier in the competition, he added another silver in the 10,000m, clocking a lifetime best of 29:33.54.

The double podium finish underlined his consistency across long-distance events and established him among India's brightest endurance prospects.

Shravani Sangle also enjoyed an outstanding championship. Already a gold medallist after anchoring India to victory in the Mixed 4x400m relay, the 20-year-old added a bronze medal in the women's 400m hurdles, recording a lifetime best of 58.09 seconds.

Her performances across two demanding events highlighted both her versatility and ability to perform under championship pressure.

India's medal tally also received an important contribution from the field events. Priya Sheoran secured bronze in the women's discus throw with a best effort of 50.44m, producing another podium finish for the Indian contingent. Bhartpreet Singh also earned a bronze medal in the men's discus throw with 52.91m, while several other field athletes reached finals and recorded personal best performances throughout the week.

The spread of medals across throwing events reflects the steady development of India's field event programme alongside its traditional strengths in middle-distance running and relays.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of India's campaign was the number of athletes who produced career-best performances during the championships. Anand Singh crossed the 80-metre barrier for the first time. Shivaji Parashuram achieved a lifetime best in the 10,000m. Shravani Sangle registered her fastest-ever time in the 400m hurdles.

Several relay teams also produced season-best performances while competing against Asia's strongest emerging athletes. Such improvements at major championships are often viewed as a stronger indicator of long-term development than medal counts alone.

The inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships served as an important bridge between junior and senior international competition. For India, the tournament highlighted a generation of athletes capable of competing consistently against Asia's best. With medals arriving in sprints, relays, distance events, hurdles, javelin, discus, and other field disciplines, the performances demonstrated the increasing breadth of Indian athletics.

Finishing with 16 medals, including three gold, four silver, and nine bronze, India not only secured fourth place in the overall standings but also laid a strong foundation for the future.

As many of these athletes now prepare to transition into senior international competition, the performances in this championship suggest India's next generation is ready to make an impact on the continental and global stage.
