India's young wrestlers delivered a remarkable all-round performance at the U-20 Asian Wrestling Championships, finishing the continental competition with an impressive haul of 20 medals across Greco-Roman, women's wrestling and men's freestyle events.

The Indian contingent secured four gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals, underlining the country's growing depth in age-group wrestling. The strong performances also translated into impressive team results, with India's women's wrestling team finishing runners-up and the men's freestyle squad claiming third place overall. The championships concluded on a high for the Indian contingent, which had already enjoyed success at the Under-15 Asian Wrestling Championships held at the same venue earlier.

The latest results reinforce India's emergence as one of Asia's leading wrestling nations at the junior level, with several young wrestlers now establishing themselves as future prospects for the senior international circuit.

India's women wrestlers were the standout performers of the championship, finishing second in the team standings with 184 points. Only China, which accumulated 189 points, finished ahead of India, while traditional powerhouse Japan had to settle for third place with 142 points. The five-point gap separating India from China reflects just how competitive the women's competition proved to be. Equally significant was India's 42-point advantage over Japan, one of the strongest wrestling nations in the world.

The team also recorded an exceptional 90 percent podium conversion rate, with nine of the ten Indian wrestlers winning medals.

That level of consistency across multiple weight categories highlighted the strength of India's women's wrestling programme and the quality of talent emerging through the junior ranks.

India's gold medal winners in the women's division produced commanding performances throughout the tournament. Parveen dominated the 50kg category, defeating Uzbekistan's Shokhista Shonazarova 13-2 in the final to claim the continental title. Muskan then produced one of India's most hard-fought victories of the tournament in the 53kg final. Facing Japan's Mai Ogawa, the Indian wrestler held her nerve during a closely contested bout before emerging with a narrow 6-5 victory.

Kajal completed India's golden performances in the women's competition with an impressive 5-0 victory over Japan's Mahiru Fujita in the 76kg final, showcasing excellent tactical control from start to finish. The trio's performances formed the foundation of India's runner-up finish in the team standings.

India's women continued adding medals across multiple categories. Manya Rajput (57kg), Savita (62kg) and Manisha (72kg) all reached their respective finals before settling for silver medals after losing to Chinese opponents. The bronze medal winners also produced dominant displays in their classification bouts.

Kajal (55kg) defeated Uzbekistan's Sakibjamal Esbosynova by fall, while Komal (59kg) overwhelmed Kyrgyzstan's Akylai Chynybaeva 12-0 through technical superiority. Mansi Lather completed the women's medal tally by defeating Korea's Yeonwoo Song 13-2 in the 65kg bronze medal contest.

With medals spread across almost every weight category, India's women demonstrated both quality and depth.

The men's freestyle team also enjoyed an excellent championship, finishing third overall with 152 points. Kazakhstan claimed the team title with 170 points, while Iran finished second with 164 points. India's lone freestyle gold medal came through Sumit Kumar Laxman Bharaskar in the 70kg category.

The Indian wrestler produced one of the tournament's most entertaining finals, defeating Kazakhstan's Sungkar Seidakhmet 13-7 in a high-scoring contest to secure the gold medal. Three Indian wrestlers reached the finals but narrowly missed out on titles.

Pushp (61kg), Saurabh Yadav (79kg) and Ronak (125kg) all earned silver medals after strong performances throughout the tournament.

The freestyle squad also contributed three bronze medals through Rohit (57kg), Adarsh Yuvraj Patil (74kg) and Lacky (97kg), each winning their respective playoff bouts convincingly.

Earlier in the championship, India's Greco-Roman wrestlers also made important contributions to the overall medal tally. Akshay Rana reached the final in the 97kg category before finishing with a silver medal after losing to Iran's Amirsam Behnam Mohammadi. Three bronze medals followed through Neeraj Patel (55kg), Anuj (67kg) and Dheeraj Kumar Malik, all of whom secured victories in their bronze medal playoffs.

Although Greco-Roman remains an area where India continues to chase the continent's strongest nations, the performances showed encouraging signs of progress.

The Wrestling Federation of India welcomed the performances of the junior contingent, viewing the results as evidence of a healthy talent pipeline.

WFI President Sanjay Kumar Singh praised the young wrestlers after the championships.

"Winning 20 medals at the continental level proves the immense depth and talent of our junior wrestling pipeline."

Highlighting the women's team's outstanding campaign, he added:

"Our women's team showed exceptional dominance by outclassing a powerhouse like Japan, and our boys put up a tremendous fight in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman against the best in Asia."

Looking ahead, Singh reaffirmed the federation's commitment to athlete development.

"The Federation is completely committed to nurturing these young athletes with the right training and exposure so they can seamlessly transition into champions for India on the senior international stage."

The U-20 Asian Wrestling Championships provided another encouraging indication of India's growing strength in international wrestling. Winning 20 medals across all three disciplines reflects not only individual excellence but also the increasing depth of the country's development system. The performances become even more significant considering India had also concluded the Under-15 Asian Wrestling Championships with an impressive 21 medals, highlighting the consistent emergence of talented young wrestlers across different age groups.

As preparations begin for future World Championships and senior international competitions, many of these medal winners will now look to make the transition to the next level.

With strong performances in women's wrestling, encouraging results in men's freestyle and continued progress in Greco-Roman, India's future in international wrestling appears increasingly bright. The success at the U-20 Asian Championships serves as another reminder that the country's next generation of wrestlers is well-positioned to continue India's proud legacy on the continental and global stage.
