The Indian men's football team produced a much-improved performance but was denied victory by a late penalty as it played out a 1-1 draw against Tajikistan in the second international friendly at the Hisor Central Stadium on Tuesday.

After suffering a disappointing 3-1 defeat in the first match of the series, the Blue Tigers showed greater organisation, defensive discipline and attacking intent. India appeared set for a morale-boosting win after Vikram Partap Singh's first-half goal, only for Sheriddin Boboev to convert a penalty seven minutes from time and rescue a draw for the hosts. The result means India finishes the June FIFA window with one draw and one defeat from the two-match series, while extending its winless run under head coach Khalid Jamil.

Facing a Tajikistan side ranked 103rd in the world, India knew it would spend long periods without possession. The hosts started brightly and immediately pushed India onto the back foot. Tajikistan won a succession of corners in the opening stages and looked determined to replicate the attacking dominance they displayed in the first friendly.

However, India's defensive structure looked far more organised this time around. One of the biggest positives was the performance of debutants Bijoy Varghese and Pramveer. Given their first starts for the national team, both players showed composure beyond their experience.

Bijoy partnered Sandesh Jhingan effectively at the heart of defence, while Punjab FC midfielder Pramveer provided valuable protection in front of the backline.

As the game settled, India gradually became more comfortable and began looking dangerous on the counterattack.

India's breakthrough came in the 25th minute and once again originated from a Farukh Choudhary set-piece. Having scored directly from a free-kick in the first match, the Chennaiyin FC forward delivered another dangerous ball into the penalty area. Tajikistan goalkeeper Rustam Yatimov failed to deal with the delivery cleanly, and Vikram Partap Singh reacted quickest to poke the ball home from close range.

The goal was a significant moment for the Mumbai City FC forward, who opened his account for the senior national team. It was also another reminder of Farukh's growing influence from dead-ball situations. While questions remain regarding his overall consistency, his delivery has become an increasingly valuable weapon for India.

Despite taking the lead, India remained under pressure for much of the first half. Tajikistan continued to test the defence through crosses and set-pieces, but Sandesh Jhingan and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu ensured the visitors entered the break with their advantage intact.

The second half followed a predictable pattern. Tajikistan dominated possession and territory, while India defended deep and looked to exploit transitions.

As the pressure increased, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced a series of important interventions. The Indian captain made crucial saves to deny Salokhiddin Irgashev and Parviz Umarboev, while also commanding his penalty area effectively during numerous aerial attacks.

India's defensive resilience was one of the major positives of the evening. Compared to the first friendly, where the Blue Tigers were repeatedly exposed, this performance showed greater organisation and commitment. Rahul Bheke's introduction added further experience, with the defender making his 50th appearance for India.

Yet despite the improvement, India struggled to create meaningful chances after taking the lead. Rahim Ali, Mohammed Sanan and Farukh Choudhary worked hard but were unable to consistently relieve pressure. The Blue Tigers increasingly found themselves pinned inside their own half as Tajikistan pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

For much of the evening, Vikram Partap Singh looked set to be India's match-winner. However, the forward's memorable first international goal was overshadowed by an unfortunate moment late in the contest. In the 83rd minute, a fierce strike from inside the penalty area struck Vikram's arm, prompting the referee to award a penalty. The decision proved decisive.

Sheriddin Boboev stepped up and confidently fired his spot-kick into the top corner, leaving Gurpreet with no chance and levelling the score at 1-1. It was the second consecutive match in which India conceded from the penalty spot, highlighting an area that will undoubtedly concern Khalid Jamil and his coaching staff.

While the late equaliser denied India victory, there were reasons for optimism. The performances of Bijoy Varghese and Pramveer offered encouragement for the future, while Vikram's first international goal and Farukh's continued influence from set-pieces provided additional positives. Most importantly, India looked significantly more competitive against a side ranked 34 places above them.

However, the match also highlighted lingering concerns. The Blue Tigers continue to struggle in possession, create too few clear-cut opportunities and remain vulnerable when defending sustained pressure.

The statistics reflected the balance of play. Tajikistan created more chances, carried greater attacking threat and came close to finding a winner deep into stoppage time before Gurpreet produced another crucial save.

For Khalid Jamil, the result represents a small step forward after the defeat in the first match, but it does little to ease the broader concerns surrounding the national team's form.

India leaves Tajikistan without a victory, extending its winless streak and continuing a difficult period that has already seen the Blue Tigers miss out on AFC Asian Cup qualification and slide down the FIFA rankings.

The challenge now is to build on the positives from Hisor while addressing the issues that continue to hold the team back before competitive football resumes later this year.
