The Indian men’s hockey team delivered one of its most complete performances of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2025-26 season, defeating Germany 3-1 in Rotterdam to register a memorable victory built on clinical finishing and disciplined defending.

The result was made even more special by Manpreet Singh, who became the most-capped player in Indian hockey history, surpassing former captain and Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey’s record of 412 international appearances. Goals from Mandeep Singh (7’), Shilanand Lakra (13’) and Nilakanta Sharma (35’) ensured India secured all three points, while midfielder Hardik Singh was deservedly named Player of the Match for controlling the tempo and linking defence with attack throughout the contest.

The victory also represented an excellent response from India after its narrow defeat to the Netherlands earlier in the Rotterdam leg and showcased the team’s growing confidence ahead of future international assignments.

India settled into the match quickly and looked comfortable in possession from the opening whistle. The midfield trio dictated play effectively, allowing the forwards to apply sustained pressure on the German defence. The breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute when Mandeep Singh demonstrated excellent awareness inside the circle. Receiving the ball under pressure, he executed a sharp turn before firing past German goalkeeper Alexander Stadler to hand India a deserved 1-0 lead.

Rather than sitting back after the opener, India continued to press aggressively and reapplied pressure through quick passing combinations and intelligent movement.

Their positive approach paid dividends just before the end of the opening quarter when Shilanand Lakra doubled the advantage. Lakra found space inside the circle and calmly beat Stadler with a well-taken finish in the 13th minute, putting India firmly in command at 2-0.

Germany attempted to change the momentum during the second quarter by increasing the intensity of their press and spending longer periods inside the Indian half.

However, India’s defensive unit stood firm. The Europeans earned their first penalty corner in the 24th minute, but Amit Rohidas produced an outstanding block to deny the drag-flick attempt. Three minutes later, Germany secured another penalty corner after sustained attacking pressure, only for goalkeeper Mohith to make a composed save and preserve India’s two-goal cushion.

The resilience shown by the Indian defence ensured the team entered halftime with its 2-0 advantage intact.

India resumed the second half with the same attacking intent and was rewarded with arguably the finest goal of the match. In the 35th minute, Nilakanta Sharma embarked on a brilliant solo run, weaving through German defenders before calmly slotting the ball into the net to extend India’s lead to 3-0. The goal highlighted both his technical ability and composure under pressure and effectively put India in complete control of proceedings.

It also reflected the confidence with which the visitors were playing, refusing to retreat despite holding a comfortable advantage.

To their credit, Germany continued to search for a way back into the contest and eventually found a breakthrough in the closing seconds of the third quarter. With just 20 seconds remaining before the final break, Raphael Hartkopf scored in the 45th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1 and offer his side a glimmer of hope. The goal injected fresh energy into the German team heading into the final quarter, but India responded with maturity and tactical discipline.

Instead of panicking, the visitors maintained their defensive structure, counter-pressed effectively and continued to attack through the flanks whenever opportunities arose.

Germany mounted one final push in the closing stages and won a penalty corner in the 59th minute after launching sustained attacks deep into Indian territory. The situation had the potential to create a nervy finish, but India’s defensive unit remained composed. The penalty corner was successfully defended, ensuring Germany could not reduce the deficit further. Moments later, the final whistle confirmed a deserved 3-1 victory for India, capping an impressive all-round performance against one of world hockey’s traditional powerhouses.

While the goalscorers naturally attracted attention, Hardik Singh’s influence in midfield proved equally important. Awarded the Player of the Match, Hardik consistently linked defence and attack, disrupted Germany’s build-up play and helped India maintain possession during crucial phases of the contest. His performance embodied the balance that India displayed throughout the match combining attacking ambition with tactical discipline.

Beyond the result itself, the evening will be remembered for a historic milestone achieved by Manpreet Singh. By taking the field against Germany, the veteran midfielder surpassed Dilip Tirkey’s tally of 412 international caps, becoming the most-capped player in the history of Indian hockey. Having served India with distinction for more than a decade, including captaining the side during several major tournaments, Manpreet’s longevity and consistency stand as remarkable achievements in modern international sport.

His record-breaking appearance adds another chapter to an already illustrious career and further cements his status as one of Indian hockey’s greatest servants.

The 3-1 triumph over Germany represents more than just three valuable points in the Pro League standings. It demonstrated India’s ability to execute a clear tactical plan against elite opposition while showcasing both attacking quality and defensive resilience. With Mandeep Singh, Shilanand Lakra and Nilakanta Sharma finding the net, Hardik Singh controlling midfield and Manpreet Singh making history, the match delivered multiple positives for the Indian camp.

As the Pro League campaign continues, performances like this will provide confidence that India possesses both the depth and quality required to challenge the world’s best while continuing its pursuit of success on the international stage.
