India’s 51-Year Wait for Men’s Hockey World Cup Semi-Final Continues After 5-3 Loss to Argentina

India's wait for a place in the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup semi-finals will stretch on for at least another four years after a 3-5 defeat to Argentina ended their hopes in their decisive Pool E encounter at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.

India entered the contest knowing that only a convincing victory could keep their semi-final hopes alive. Instead, Argentina’s attacking quality once again proved too much to handle as the Indian defence conceded five goals in a match that began with enormous promise but eventually descended into disappointment. Sukhjeet Singh scored twice, while Hardik Singh converted a late penalty stroke, but India were unable to overcome an Argentine side led by another impressive performance from Tomás Domene. 

The result ended India’s hopes of a first men’s World Cup semi-final appearance since 1975. With both the Indian men’s and women’s teams now out of semi-final contention, their remaining matches at the World Cup will be classification fixtures. 

India’s night could hardly have begun in a worse manner. Argentina took the lead inside the opening minute when Joaquin Toscani finished after an aerial ball from midfield found its way into the Indian circle. India were caught scrambling, with the defence unable to organise itself quickly enough. 

The early goal immediately put India under pressure. India had already entered the match needing a victory by at least two goals to keep their qualification hopes alive. Conceding inside the opening minute meant the equation became even more difficult. 

Argentina continued to press and earned a penalty corner after a poor challenge from Jarmanpreet Singh. Domene stepped up, but goalkeeper Mohith HS produced an important save. However, India could not hold out for long. Argentina earned another penalty corner, and Della Torre made it 2-0 with a low drag flick that beat Mohith and the post defender India suddenly faced a mountain to climb. 

Sukhjeet gives India hope 

India did not collapse. 

In the 10th minute, Sukhjeet Singh brought India back into the contest with a powerful finish from inside the circle. Collecting the ball under pressure, Sukhjeet turned and fired towards goal, leaving Argentina goalkeeper Santiago with no chance. The goal changed the momentum of the opening quarter. 

India began pressing higher and looked more aggressive in their attempt to force turnovers. Mohith continued to make important saves, keeping the deficit to one as Argentina threatened again before the end of the first quarter. India also began to see more of the ball in the second quarter. 

There were opportunities. Hardik Singh played Harmanpreet Singh into the circle, but the Indian captain could not bring the ball under control. Later, a mistake by an Argentine defender opened space for an Indian counterattack, but the passing broke down. India had possession and intent but lacked the final execution. At half-time, Argentina led 2-1. 

India still had hope, but they needed far more from the second half. 

The second half began disastrously for India. Just 34 seconds after the restart, India conceded a penalty corner following contact inside the circle. Argentina could not convert the initial opportunity, but their pressure continued. Then, in the 33rd minute, Domene produced a moment of individual quality to make it 3-1. Instead of relying on a penalty corner, the Argentine forward unleashed a superb reverse hit that flew past Mohith. 

The goal was a major blow. India responded by earning penalty corners and creating pressure. Harmanpreet had opportunities, while Dilpreet Singh came agonisingly close to getting a touch to a dangerous ball into the circle. 

But India could not find the second goal they desperately needed. Argentina, by contrast, was ruthless. 

A poor pass from Yashdeep Siwach in midfield was intercepted, allowing Argentina to launch another attack. The move ended with a penalty stroke after the ball struck Sumit’s foot inside the circle. 

Domene stepped up and calmly converted. Argentina were now 4-1 ahead. For India, the semi-final dream was effectively slipping away. 

Toscani completes Argentina’s dominant night 

Argentina added a fifth goal in the final quarter through Toscani, who produced a brilliant piece of skill inside the circle. Weaving through the Indian defence, Toscani found space and beat Mohith to extend Argentina’s lead to 5-1. It summed up India’s defensive struggles. 

For India, the wait for a World Cup semi-final appearance continues. Their next assignment will be in the classification phase, where they will look to finish their campaign on a positive note.

The final whistle confirmed Argentina's 5-3 victory and brought India's semi-final hopes to an end.
