India begin their Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign with lawn bowls action as Putul Sonowal, Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey take the field in Glasgow.

India's campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 officially begins on July 23, even before the opening ceremony takes place, with the country's first athletes stepping onto the greens in lawn bowls at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow.

While the opening ceremony later in the evening will formally launch the Games, India's sporting action gets underway much earlier with two important sectional-stage bowls matches. The women's pairs team of Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey will take on Malta's Connie Rixon and Rebecca Rixon, while Putul Sonowal faces one of the toughest possible opening assignments in the men's singles against Canada's legendary Ryan Bester.

The day also marks another significant moment for the Indian contingent, with Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu set to lead the team as flag bearer, while Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will serve as baton bearer during the opening ceremony.

Although no medals will be decided on the opening day, the results could prove crucial in determining India's progress to the knockout rounds.

Lawn bowls may not enjoy the same popularity in India as athletics or boxing, but it has quietly become one of the country's most successful Commonwealth Games sports. At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Indian lawn bowls made history when the women's fours team captured a stunning gold medal, one of the most memorable victories of the entire Games. The men's fours team also added a silver medal, establishing India as an emerging force in the sport.

Now, Glasgow presents another opportunity to build on that success. Interestingly, Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey, who feature in the women's pairs competition, were both members of the historic gold medal-winning women's fours team in Birmingham.

Their experience of competing under pressure could prove invaluable as India begins another Commonwealth campaign.

India's first event of the Games will see Pinki Singh, serving as the skip, partner Rupa Rani Tirkey, the lead, against Malta's Connie Rixon and Rebecca Rixon. The match forms part of the sectional stage, where every victory is vital in securing qualification for the knockout rounds. Although India enters with greater international experience, opening matches at multi-sport events often present unique challenges. Athletes must quickly adapt to unfamiliar playing conditions while managing the pressure of representing their country.

For Pinki and Rupa, however, the experience gained from Birmingham could provide a significant advantage. Having already won Commonwealth gold together, the Indian duo understands exactly what it takes to perform on one of the biggest stages in the sport.

India's second contest of the day promises to be even more challenging. Putul Sonowal, currently ranked World No. 21, begins his men's singles campaign against one of lawn bowls' greatest modern players—Ryan Bester of Canada. Bester is a World Bowls Hall of Fame inductee, the reigning men's singles world champion, and is competing in his seventh consecutive Commonwealth Games.

His wealth of experience and impressive international record make him one of the favourites not only for the match but also for the gold medal. For Sonowal, the encounter represents an opportunity to measure himself against one of the sport's true legends. An upset victory would immediately establish the Indian as one of the players to watch during the remainder of the tournament.

Glasgow 2026 also introduces a significant change to the competition. For the first time in Commonwealth Games history, both able-bodied and para bowls will be played indoors. Instead of the traditional outdoor lawns, organisers have installed four portable rinks inside the SEC Centre, creating a controlled indoor environment for the competition.

The move reflects Glasgow's broader strategy of delivering a more compact and cost-effective Commonwealth Games by maximising existing infrastructure. While the playing surface has changed, the objective remains exactly the same. Players must roll their bowls as close as possible to the jack, the small white target ball positioned at the opposite end of the rink.

Success requires precision, tactical awareness and consistency rather than physical strength, making lawn bowls one of the most technically demanding sports at the Games.

Opening Ceremony to Follow

Once competition concludes, attention will shift to the opening ceremony, scheduled to begin at 12:30 AM IST on July 24. India's contingent will be led into the OVO Hydro by Mirabai Chanu, one of the country's greatest weightlifters and a two-time Commonwealth Games champion. Joining her will be boxing star Lovlina Borgohain, whose Olympic bronze medal and consistent international success have made her one of India's leading athletes.

Their selection reflects the growing prominence of Olympic sports within India's Commonwealth Games programme, particularly at an edition where wrestling, shooting and badminton are absent.

Although no medals are available on the opening day, a positive start remains extremely important. Sectional-stage victories can provide momentum, confidence and improved qualification prospects heading into the latter stages of the competition. For Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey, success would be another step towards defending India's reputation as one of the strongest lawn bowls nations in the Commonwealth.

For Putul Sonowal, overcoming Ryan Bester would rank among the biggest victories of his career and immediately strengthen his medal ambitions. With athletics, boxing, weightlifting and other major sports still to come, July 23 offers India the opportunity to begin its Glasgow campaign on the right note.

As the opening ceremony celebrates the start of another Commonwealth Games, India's lawn bowls contingent will already have the honour of becoming the first athletes to represent the tricolour in competition, hoping to lay the foundation for another successful campaign on the international stage.
