India Set Up SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 Final Clash Against Bangladesh

India defeated Bhutan 1-0 while Bangladesh edged Nepal 2-1 to book their places in the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 final in Goa.
Five-time champions India will face defending champions Bangladesh in the final of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 after both sides secured hard-fought victories in their respective semi-finals on Wednesday in Goa.
India overcame a spirited Bhutan side 1-0 in the second semi-final, while Bangladesh produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Nepal 2-1 and book their place in a third consecutive SAFF Women’s Championship final.
The title clash will now bring together the two strongest teams of the tournament so far. India had already defeated Bangladesh 3-0 during the group stage and will enter the final aiming to reclaim the regional crown, while Bangladesh will be looking for revenge and a successful defence of their title.
India entered the semi-final against Bhutan as overwhelming favourites but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Bhutanese defence.
The hosts dominated possession from the opening whistle and spent long periods in the opposition half. However, despite creating several opportunities, India struggled to convert their chances.
Bhutan defended resolutely and frustrated the Indian attack throughout the first half. The Blue Tigresses moved the ball well and controlled the tempo, but the final touch was missing as the teams headed into the break with the score locked at 0-0.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute when Sanfida Nongrum found the back of the net to give India a deserved lead. The goal settled India's nerves and allowed them to play with greater freedom. Despite taking control of the match, the hosts were unable to add to their tally.
Manisha Kalyan, who joined the squad ahead of the semi-final after being released by her Peruvian club Alianza Lima, had opportunities to make an immediate impact. Pyari Xaxa and Malavika also created promising openings but failed to convert.
While India's defence remained largely untroubled, the missed opportunities ensured the contest remained alive until the final whistle. Nevertheless, Sanfida's strike proved enough as India secured a narrow but valuable victory to reach yet another SAFF Women's Championship final.
The first semi-final produced far more drama as defending champions Bangladesh edged Nepal 2-1 in a thrilling contest. Nepal started brightly and dominated much of the opening half. Their positive approach was rewarded in the 23rd minute when Gita Rana scored from a Dipa Shahi corner to give the six-time runners-up a deserved lead. The goal energised Nepal and they looked capable of extending their advantage as Bangladesh struggled to establish control.
However, Bangladesh found a crucial equaliser in first-half stoppage time through a fortunate set-piece.
Ritu Porna Chakma delivered a corner that caught Nepal goalkeeper Anjila Subba off guard, with the ball finding its way into the net. The unexpected goal changed the momentum of the match and ensured the sides entered the interval level at 1-1.
The second half was a tightly contested affair with both teams searching for a winner.
Nepal continued to create opportunities while Bangladesh remained dangerous on the counterattack. As the match moved into stoppage time, it appeared extra time would be required to separate the sides.
Instead, Bangladesh delivered the decisive moment in the third minute of added time.
Shamsunnahar Jr. produced a brilliant run down the flank before cutting the ball back into the penalty area. Substitute Mosammat Sagorika reacted quickest and squeezed her effort past two defenders to send the ball into the net.
The dramatic late winner sparked celebrations among the Bangladesh players and coaching staff as they secured their place in another SAFF final.
India and Bangladesh Set for Blockbuster Final
The final now presents an intriguing rematch between India and Bangladesh. The two teams met earlier in the tournament during the group stage, where India delivered one of their most impressive performances to register a convincing 3-0 victory over the defending champions.
That result established India as one of the favourites for the title, but knockout football often tells a different story.
Bangladesh have shown tremendous resilience throughout the tournament and demonstrated their fighting spirit once again against Nepal. Their ability to score important goals in crucial moments could make them dangerous opponents in the final.
For India, the focus will be on improving their finishing. While the Blue Tigresses created plenty of opportunities against Bhutan, they were only able to score once despite dominating the match.
Coach Crispin Chettri will be pleased with his side's defensive organisation and overall control but will expect greater efficiency in front of goal against stronger opposition. The return of Manisha Kalyan also provides India with an additional attacking weapon heading into the championship decider.
With regional supremacy at stake, the stage is now set for a highly anticipated final between two of South Asia's strongest women's football teams.
India will be aiming to reclaim the SAFF Women's Championship crown, while Bangladesh will be determined to retain their title and prove that their group-stage defeat was merely a temporary setback.
