Mehrajuddin Wadoo Takes Charge of India U17 Team With AFC Asian Cup Qualification the Immediate Target

The next chapter of Mehrajuddin Wadoo's coaching career will begin with one of the most important assignments in Indian youth football.

The All India Football Federation has appointed the former India international as the head coach of the India U17 men's national team, with the 42-year-old taking charge as the Blue Colts begin preparations for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2027 Qualifiers.

Wadoo brings with him a combination of international experience, an AFC Pro Licence, and several years of coaching across Indian football. Most recently the head coach of Mohammedan Sporting Club, he has previously managed Real Kashmir FC and Sudeva Delhi FC. His immediate task, however, is different from the challenges of club football. He has to build a team from a pool of young players, establish a clear playing identity, and prepare them for a difficult qualification campaign in Malaysia.

A new beginning in Margao

Wadoo took charge of the India U17 camp in Margao, Goa, on Wednesday, September 2, with the initial camp currently in its trial phase. The timing leaves India with just over two months to prepare for the qualifiers, which will be played from November 11 to 20.

For Wadoo, the early stages will therefore be about assessment as much as preparation. The camp provides an opportunity to identify the players capable of handling international football at the U17 level while building the foundations of the side that will travel to Kuala Lumpur.

"It is a great honor to take charge of the India U17 men's national team," Wadoo said. "This is an important age group, and our immediate focus is to create an environment where they can develop and compete at the highest level."

He also stressed that the current camp would involve trials before the team turns its attention fully towards the qualifiers.

A difficult Group E awaits.

India has been drawn in Group E alongside hosts Malaysia, Palestine, Singapore, and Guam. The Blue Colts will play all their matches in Malaysia in a single round-robin format, meaning there will be little margin for error across the four games. India's campaign begins against Singapore on November 11. They will then face Guam on November 14, Palestine on November 17 and hosts Malaysia on November 20.

The group winners will qualify for the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2027, which will be hosted by Uzbekistan from May 12 to 29 next year. With only seven group winners progressing from the qualifying stage, every result will carry considerable weight. India was seeded in Pot 1 for the draw, based on a points system derived from their final rankings across the most recent three editions of the AFC U17 Asian Cup Finals.

That seeding provides some context around India's standing, but it does not make qualification straightforward. Malaysia will have home advantage, while Palestine and Singapore are likely to provide different tactical challenges. Guam, meanwhile, represents India's opportunity to build momentum before the decisive fixtures.

Wadoo's playing career gives him another perspective.

Wadoo's appointment also brings a valuable perspective from his own experience as an international footballer. The former defender represented India at senior level and was part of the team that won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008. That victory secured India's qualification for the AFC Asian Cup, where Wadoo subsequently featured in the 2011 edition.

His international career also included victories in the SAFF Championship in 2005 and the Nehru Cup in 2007 and 2009. At club level, he was part of Chennaiyin FC's ISL-winning side in 2015.

Those experiences give Wadoo a direct understanding of what it takes to move from domestic football into the international environment. That could be particularly valuable for a group of teenagers entering a stage of their careers where the jump in intensity, tactical demands, and expectations can be significant.

Wadoo's recent coaching experience has largely come in senior club football.

His spells with Sudeva Delhi FC and Real Kashmir FC gave him exposure to developing Indian players as well as the demands of managing competitive senior sides. His most recent assignment with Mohammedan Sporting added another layer of experience in one of Indian football's most demanding environments.

The U17 role will require a different approach. Results matter, particularly with qualification at stake, but youth international football is also about development.

Wadoo will need to create an environment in which players can make mistakes, learn from them, and still understand the importance of competing for India. His comments after taking charge indicate that development will be central to his approach.

The immediate priority is to build an environment where the players can develop while preparing them to compete at the highest level.

India has already qualified for the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 in Saudi Arabia, where the team was eliminated in the group stage. The 2027 qualification campaign therefore offers the Blue Colts an opportunity to secure consecutive appearances at the continental tournament. If they succeed, India will qualify for the AFC U17 Asian Cup for the 11th time in their history.

The next step is straightforward: finish top of Group E. But achieving that will require Wadoo to turn a collection of young prospects into a cohesive international team within a short preparation window. The November schedule offers four opportunities to do exactly that.

For Wadoo, this appointment represents more than another coaching job. It is an opportunity to shape a generation of players who could eventually become senior India internationals. The AFC U17 Asian Cup qualifiers will provide the first major examination of his tenure.

The Blue Colts will begin against Singapore, face Guam three days later, then meet Palestine before finishing against hosts Malaysia. By November 20, India will know whether Wadoo has guided them into the continental tournament. For now, the work begins in Margao.

A new coach, a new group of young players, and a clear objective: get India back to the AFC U17 Asian Cup and lay the foundation for the next generation of Indian football.
