India’s men’s badminton team delivered a commanding performance to secure their place in the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup 2026, blanking Australia 5-0 in a Group A clash in Horsens, Denmark.

The emphatic victory not only confirmed India’s progression to the knockout stage but also reinforced their credentials as one of the contenders in the tournament. Coming into the tie, India knew that a win would guarantee qualification. After opening their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Canada, the team maintained momentum with a clinical display across all five matches against Australia.

The tie began with Lakshya Sen leading India in the opening singles. Facing Ephraim Stephen Sam, Lakshya controlled the tempo from the outset, using his pace and precision to dictate rallies. He secured a straight-games victory, 21-14, 21-16, giving India an early lead. The win was not just about the scoreline but the manner in which Lakshya managed the match—minimising errors and maintaining pressure throughout.

His performance set the tone for what would become a one-sided contest.

India doubled their advantage through Ayush Shetty, who delivered one of the most dominant performances of the tie. The Asian Championships silver medallist needed just 26 minutes to dispatch Shrey Dhand 21-8, 21-6. Ayush’s aggressive approach and sharp net play left his opponent with little room to recover. His ability to finish points quickly ensured that India took firm control of the tie at 2-0. At this stage, Australia were already under significant pressure, needing to win all remaining matches to stay alive.

Satwik-Chirag Seal the Tie

The decisive moment came in the doubles, where Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty once again showcased why they are among the world’s top pairs. Up against Rizky Hidayat and Jack Yu, the Indian duo combined power with precision to secure a 21-14, 21-16 victory. Their attacking dominance, particularly from the mid-court, ensured Australia had no way back into the tie.

With this win, India took an unassailable 3-0 lead, officially confirming their place in the quarterfinals.

With qualification secured, H. S. Prannoy, who replaced Kidambi Srikanth in the lineup, made his presence count in the fourth match. He defeated Rishi Honda Boopathy 21-11, 21-17 in a composed performance. Prannoy’s experience was evident as he controlled rallies and capitalised on key points, ensuring India maintained their clean sweep.

His inclusion in the lineup provided depth and flexibility, something that could prove crucial in the knockout stages.

India completed the 5-0 rout through the pairing of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M. R. Arjun. The duo delivered a confident performance, winning 21-12, 21-10 against Andika Ramadiansyah and Sam. Their ability to control the net and maintain attacking pressure ensured there was no late resistance from Australia. This result also highlighted India’s growing depth in doubles, an area that has historically been a concern in team events.

Group Dynamics and Next Challenge

With two wins from two ties, India have secured their place in the quarterfinals. However, the group stage is not over yet. They will now face top seeds China in their final Group A fixture a match that will determine the group winner. China have also registered identical results, defeating both Australia and Canada convincingly.

This upcoming clash will be a significant test for India. Beyond determining standings, it offers an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the strongest teams in world badminton.

India’s campaign so far reflects a team that is well-balanced across singles and doubles. The presence of experienced players alongside emerging talent has created a lineup capable of delivering under pressure. The clean sweep against Australia will provide confidence, but the knockout stages will demand a higher level of consistency, particularly against top-ranked opponents.

India’s 5-0 victory over Australia was a statement performance clinical, composed, and complete. It secured their quarterfinal berth and reinforced their position as serious contenders in the Thomas Cup 2026. As they prepare to face China in the final group match, the focus will be on maintaining momentum and fine-tuning combinations ahead of the knockout rounds.

With the squad showing both depth and form, India’s campaign is building in the right direction at a crucial stage of the tournament.
