PV Sindhu created history as she became the first Indian player to win the prestigious Super 750 Japan event with an impressive straight-game victory over home favourite Akane Yamaguchi, played at Tokyo on 19th July 2026.
Sindhu began the initial stages of the first game with an impressive 3-0 lead. Yamaguchi fought back strongly to level scores at 3-3. Both players fought for each point before the Indian showed class, going with a 9-6 lead. Yamaguchi showed great resilience with 5 successive points in a row, taking a 11-9 lead at the break. After the interval, it was a neck-and-neck battle before Sindhu put on a dominating display, keeping Yamaguchi under some pressure.
Yamaguchi fought again once again to reduce the scoreline before Sindhu showed an attacking mindset, keeping the Japanese under pressure and winning the first game comfortably at 21-17.
The second game began with both players taking alternate points before Sindhu upped her game with an attacking mindset, keeping Yamaguchi under serious pressure. Despite some fight by the Japanese, Sindhu took a 11-7 lead at the break. After the interval, Sindhu looked in complete control, with long rallies and attacking shots keeping Yamaguchi struggling. Despite some efforts by Yamaguchi, the star Indian shuttler Sindhu held onto her nerves to win the second game comfortably by 21-17 to win the Japan Open 2026.
Sindhu achieved a historic feat with a superb performance in the entire tournament. She won her first 750 title, the first after the 2019 World Championship. It was a dominating performance by star Indian shuttler keeping India’s flag flying high after disappointing outings by Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, and Unnati Hooda, who lost in the first round itself.
Performance of PV Sindhu in Japan Open 2026
Sindhu began the first round with an impressive two-straight-game win over Wong LC of Malaysia. It was an impressive performance by Sindhu, keeping Wong winning with a 21-14, 21-11 scoreline.
The star Indian shuttler stunned the fifth-seeded Han Yue of China in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by Sindhu, not allowing any chance for her opponent to win, with a 21-16, 21-14 scoreline. She looked impressive right from the word go, keeping Han under serious pressure and making sure that the Indian won with ease.
Sindhu got a walkover in the quarterfinals against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan. The Indian scored 1 point before Okuhara decided to retire because of an injury.
It was an impressive performance by Sindhu in the semi-finals as she defeated Chen Yu Fei of China in two straight games. The first game was a closely fought affair as Sindhu looked impressive before Chen fought back strongly. The Indian showed class as she won the first game by 21-19. Sindhu dominated the second game, keeping Chen under pressure with attacking shots. With a scoreline of 15-10 in favour of the Indian, Chen Yu Fei decided to retire hurt because of a hamstring injury.
Sindhu proved her worth with an impressive performance in the finals of the Japan Open 2026 against Yamaguchi. Despite some fight by Yamaguchi, Sindhu held onto her nerves, winning by 21-17 and 21-17 to win her maiden Super 750 title.
Other Indian shuttlers' performance in the Japan Open 2026
The other Indian shuttlers had a disappointing outing as Ayush Shetty, Lakshya Sen, Unnati Hooda & Satwik/Chirag lost in the first round itself. Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto went down fighting the number 1 ranked Chinese pair during the 2nd round.
Ayush Shetty went down fighting to the 2nd-seeded Kulvanut Vitisdarn of Thailand. It was a very closely fought affair right from the word go. Both players fought for each point in the first game before Vitisdarn held onto his nerves to win by 21-19. Ayush looked down and out in the 2nd game before showing great skills and courage to win with a 25-23 scoreline. Shetty looked out of sorts in the 3rd game as Vitisdarn won with a comfortable 21-15 score line.
Lakshya Sen looked out of sorts with a straight game loss to Koki Watanabe of Japan. Sen struggled right from the word go, losing by 16-21 and 14-21. The men’s doubles pairing of Satwik/Chirag lost the first game against D. Lundgaard/Vestergaard in a close affair by 19-21 before Satwik retired hurt due to a shoulder injury.
Unnati Hooda fought strongly before losing to Huang P-h of Chinese Taipei in three games. Hooda produced a dominating performance in the first game, putting Huang under pressure and winning with a 21-16 scoreline.
Hooda could not maintain the pressure in the next two games, losing by 16-21 and 15-21. It was a disappointing performance by Hooda. Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto won their first-round match against A Dunn and J Macperson of Scotland. It was an impressive performance by Kapila/Crasto, winning with a 21-16, 21-14 scoreline.
Kapila and Crasto went down fighting to number 1 seeded Feng and Huang in two straight games. The Indian pairing showed their class, giving a serious fight before losing 20-22. Kapila/Crasto made some fight in the 2nd game but struggled to maintain the pressure and lost by 17-21.
