The Indian Women’s Hockey Team continued its impressive resurgence in Perth with a disciplined and clinical 2-0 victory over Australia in the third match of the four-game friendly series on Friday.

Goals from Sonam and Lalremsiami secured India’s second consecutive win and handed the visitors a 2-1 lead in the series with one match remaining. The result marks a remarkable turnaround for India after losing the opening match of the series. The visitors responded with a shootout victory in the second encounter before producing arguably their most complete performance of the tour to defeat the Hockeyroos in regulation time.

Against one of the strongest teams in world hockey and in front of home support, India displayed defensive discipline, tactical maturity and efficiency in attack to secure a memorable win at the Perth Hockey Stadium.

The third match began with both sides showing caution and defensive organization. Australia enjoyed periods of possession during the opening quarter, looking to use their pace and width to create opportunities inside the Indian circle. However, India's defensive structure remained compact and well-organized, denying the hosts any clear scoring opportunities.

The Indian backline, which has steadily improved throughout the series, worked tirelessly to neutralize Australia's attacking threats. Every time the Hockeyroos attempted to build momentum, India managed to disrupt their rhythm through intelligent positioning and disciplined marking.

At the other end, India looked dangerous on the counterattack but were unable to find the final pass needed to unlock the Australian defence.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern.

Australia attempted to increase the tempo and put India under pressure, but the visitors continued to absorb everything thrown at them. Goal-scoring opportunities remained limited as both teams prioritized defensive solidity over taking unnecessary risks. By half-time, the score remained locked at 0-0, reflecting the balanced nature of the contest and the impressive defensive work from both sides.

The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the restart. India emerged from the half-time interval with renewed intent and began pushing higher up the pitch. The increased attacking pressure eventually paid dividends in the 36th minute when Sonam found the back of the net.

The field goal was a reward for India's persistence and represented a significant shift in momentum. Sonam's strike not only gave India the lead but also forced Australia to become more adventurous in search of an equaliser. That change in approach created additional space for the visitors to exploit.

The goal was particularly important because it came at a stage when both teams had struggled to create clear chances. Breaking the deadlock allowed India to dictate the pace of the contest and play with greater confidence.

After taking the lead, India showed tremendous composure. Rather than retreating deep into their own half, the visitors continued to press intelligently and maintain their structure. Australia's attempts to respond were repeatedly frustrated by India's disciplined defensive unit.

The Indian defenders stayed compact around the circle and worked collectively to limit Australia's shooting opportunities. The midfield also played a crucial role, tracking back effectively and helping to close down spaces before the hosts could build dangerous attacks.

Goalkeeping was another area where India looked assured, with the defensive unit functioning cohesively throughout the match. The ability to maintain concentration against sustained pressure was one of the standout features of India's performance.

As Australia pushed forward in search of an equaliser, India capitalised on the spaces left behind. In the 49th minute, experienced forward Lalremsiami delivered the decisive blow. The striker converted a field goal to double India's advantage and put the visitors firmly in control of the contest.

The goal was a reflection of India's growing confidence and attacking sharpness throughout the series. Having already frustrated Australia defensively, India now had the cushion they needed to manage the closing stages comfortably. At 2-0, the Hockeyroos faced an uphill battle.

Despite their efforts to reduce the deficit, India remained organized and disciplined until the final whistle, preserving a clean sheet and completing a highly impressive victory.

The result gives India a 2-1 advantage in the four-match series and represents another encouraging sign of progress under pressure against elite opposition. After narrowly losing the opening match 2-1, India showed resilience to level the series through a shootout win in the second game. The third match, however, was arguably the most significant result of the tour because it demonstrated India's ability to defeat Australia outright over 60 minutes.

Victories against top-ranked teams are always valuable, but winning away from home adds another layer of significance.

The performances in Perth suggest that the Indian squad is developing greater consistency and confidence against leading international opponents.

India will now head into the fourth and final match of the series on May 30 knowing that a victory would secure the series against Australia on their home turf. Regardless of the outcome of the final encounter, the tour has already provided several positives. Young players have gained valuable experience, the defensive unit has shown impressive improvement, and the team has demonstrated the ability to respond strongly after setbacks.

With momentum firmly on their side and confidence growing with every match, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team will now look to complete a memorable series triumph in Perth and continue building towards the major international challenges that lie ahead.
