India's U-19 boys' table tennis team continued its impressive run at the ITTF-ATTU Asian Youth Championships 2026 in Bangkok by defeating Hong Kong, China 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Monday.

The victory not only guaranteed India at least a bronze medal but also secured direct qualification for the 2027 ITTF World Youth Table Tennis Championships, marking another significant milestone for the country's rapidly improving junior table tennis programme.

While the boys celebrated a memorable achievement, the U-19 girls' campaign ended in the quarterfinals after a hard-fought 1-3 defeat to Hong Kong. The U-15 teams also endured mixed fortunes, with the girls reaching the quarterfinals before bowing out against China, while the boys suffered a 3-0 defeat to Japan.

India's quarterfinal against Hong Kong did not begin according to plan. Hong Kong's Li Ki Ho gave his team the early advantage after defeating Priyanuj Bhattacharyya 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 in the opening singles match. Facing an early deficit, India responded with remarkable composure.

P.B. Abhinandh restored parity by overcoming Wong Alvin in a gripping five-game contest. After losing the opening game, Abhinandh fought back strongly to register an 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 5-11, 11-4 victory, swinging momentum firmly in India's favour.

The comeback demonstrated the resilience that has characterised India's campaign throughout the tournament.

With the tie level at 1-1, M.R. Balamurugan produced one of India's most dominant performances of the day. Facing Lo Ka Kit, Balamurugan displayed complete control from start to finish, securing an impressive 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 straight-games victory. His commanding display gave India a crucial 2-1 lead and placed the team within touching distance of the semifinals.

The confidence generated by Balamurugan's performance proved decisive as India prepared for the fourth rubber. The responsibility of closing out the tie once again fell on P.B. Abhinandh, who returned to face Li Ki Ho. The Indian youngster rose to the occasion brilliantly.

After sharing the opening two games, Abhinandh elevated his level during the crucial stages of the match, eventually securing an 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6 victory. His second singles win of the tie completed India's impressive comeback and confirmed a 3-1 triumph. The victory ensured India progressed to the semifinals, where the team will face tournament favourites and top seeds China for a place in the final.

Reaching the semifinals carries significance beyond the guaranteed medal. Under the tournament regulations, all four semifinalists automatically qualify for the 2027 ITTF World Youth Table Tennis Championships. India's qualification is a reward for a consistently impressive campaign. Before reaching the knockout stage, the boys dominated Group 2, recording identical 3-0 victories over Thailand and Uzbekistan to finish unbeaten and earn a direct passage into the quarterfinals.

Their consistency throughout the championship highlights the growing strength of India's junior table tennis programme.

The Indian U-19 girls also reached the quarterfinals but were unable to match the success of the boys. Hong Kong took an early advantage when Su Tsz Tung edged Syndrela Das in a thrilling five-game encounter. The pressure increased further after Mak Ming Shum defeated Divyanshi Bhowmick in straight games to give Hong Kong a commanding 2-0 lead.

India refused to surrender. M. Hansini produced one of the finest individual performances of the tie, saving a match point before defeating Yuen Sum Lok 11-13, 11-4, 18-16, 11-7 to keep India's hopes alive. However, Hong Kong ultimately sealed the contest as Su Tsz Tung returned to overcome Divyanshi Bhowmick in another closely fought five-game battle. The defeat means the Indian girls will now have to qualify for next year's World Youth Championships through the continental qualification pathway.

India's U-15 teams also experienced contrasting fortunes. The U-15 girls enjoyed a strong campaign by defeating Thailand 3-2 in the Round of 16 before facing powerhouse China in the quarterfinals. Although the team fought hard, China proved too strong. Ankolika Chakraborty managed to take a game from Hanjing Du, while Tanishka Kalbharia and Ahona Ray were defeated in straight games as India exited the competition. The U-15 boys also reached the quarterfinals before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Japan.

One bright moment came from Vatsan Duklan, who pushed Ukyo Kobayashi to five games before narrowly losing after an encouraging performance.

Attention now shifts to the U-19 boys' semifinal against China, traditionally the strongest nation in world table tennis. India will enter the contest as underdogs, but confidence within the squad will be high after an unbeaten run through the group stage and a composed comeback victory over Hong Kong. Regardless of the semifinal result, India has already achieved two major objectives winning a medal at one of Asia's toughest junior competitions and securing direct qualification for the 2027 World Youth Championships.

With players like P.B. Abhinandh, M.R. Balamurugan, and Priyanuj Bhattacharyya continuing to deliver under pressure, Indian junior table tennis has once again demonstrated that it is capable of competing with the continent's best.

The semifinal against China now presents an opportunity to chase something even bigger—a place in the Asian Youth Championships final.
