India’s U17 boys volleyball team announced its arrival on the world stage with a commanding straight-sets victory over Cuba in their opening match of the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U17 World Championship in Doha, Qatar.

The Indian team defeated Cuba 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 to register what was their first-ever victory at the U17 World Championships. More importantly, it was not a narrow escape or a fortunate result. India controlled large phases of the contest and showed the composure required to close out two tightly contested sets against a traditionally strong volleyball nation.

Ankit led India’s scoring with 14 points, while Apratim added 12 in a collective performance that gave the team a dream start to its World Championship campaign.

For Indian volleyball, the result represents an important statement.

Cuba has long been associated with physicality, athleticism and a strong volleyball tradition. India’s young players, however, showed little sign of being overawed by the occasion or the opposition. From the opening set, they matched Cuba’s intensity and gradually took control of the contest.

India claimed the first set 25-18, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

The margin suggested a comfortable start, but the victory also gave India something equally important: belief. At a World Championship, particularly for a young team competing against some of the strongest volleyball systems in the world, the opening match can often define confidence levels for the remainder of the tournament.

India made sure they had the ideal start.

The second set was a much tighter affair. Cuba raised its level and pushed India deep into the set, but the Indian team held its nerve when the pressure increased. The set eventually went beyond the normal 25-point mark, with India producing the key points to edge it 26-24.

That was arguably the decisive phase of the match.

Winning the opening set had given India momentum, but winning the second demonstrated something more significant. The team could handle pressure. Cuba had every opportunity to level the match, but India remained composed and found a way to close out the crucial points.

With a 2-0 lead, India entered the third set knowing they were within touching distance of a historic victory.

Cuba continued to fight, but India once again delivered in the closing stages. The third set finished 25-22, completing a 3-0 sweep and sparking celebrations for the Indian contingent.

Ankit emerged as India’s leading scorer with 14 points, playing a central role in the team’s attacking output. Apratim also made a significant contribution with 12 points as India showed that their scoring responsibility was not dependent on one individual.

The result becomes even more significant considering the scale of the competition.

The FIVB Boys’ U17 World Championship brings together some of the strongest emerging volleyball nations, providing young players with an opportunity to test themselves against elite international competition. For India, every match at this level offers valuable exposure, but defeating Cuba in straight sets gives the team much more than experience.

It gives them momentum. India will now turn their attention to their next challenge against defending champions Italy.

The Italians began their title defence with a 3-0 victory over Romania, winning 26-24, 25-22, 25-21. While Italy did not have everything their own way, they showed the quality expected from the defending champions. Italy’s Federico Guiotto led his team with 18 points, while Samuele Filippi added nine. The defending champions also established a significant advantage at the net, recording 12 blocks compared to Romania’s four.

India will therefore face a completely different test.

Cuba challenged India with physicality and athleticism, while Italy are likely to bring greater tactical discipline, strong blocking and experience of performing in high-pressure international matches. For the Indian youngsters, it will be an opportunity to measure themselves against the defending champions after gaining confidence from their opening victory.

Elsewhere on the opening day of the tournament, several leading nations also began with straight-set victories.

Poland defeated Argentina 25-20, 26-24, 25-19, while Türkiye overcame Spain 26-24, 26-24, 25-17. Iran produced one of the most dominant performances of the day, beating Algeria 25-15, 25-19, 25-14. Venezuela also opened with a 3-0 win over hosts Qatar.

The results underline the quality of the competition India are competing in. There are no easy matches at this level, and every set can prove important as teams battle to progress through the tournament. However, India have given themselves an excellent platform.

The biggest positive from the Cuba victory was not simply the 3-0 scoreline. It was the manner in which the team handled crucial moments. The 26-24 second set and 25-22 third set showed that the Indian players were capable of maintaining their composure when the contest tightened.

For a team making history with its first-ever win at the U17 World Championships, that ability could prove invaluable in the matches ahead. India have started their campaign with a statement.

Now comes the bigger challenge: proving that the victory over Cuba was not a one-off, but the beginning of something much larger for the next generation of Indian volleyball.
