The Prime Volleyball League (PVL) Season 5 player auction delivered a strong statement on the growing depth of Indian volleyball, with established names and emerging young talents attracting significant bids as all 10 franchises completed their squads for the new season.

While Shameemudheen emerged as the most expensive player of the auction after being picked by Kochi Blue Spikers for ₹20 lakh, much of the attention was on the next generation of Indian players. Among the 11 athletes from the recently concluded Guardians Trophy who earned PVL bids, Suraj Chaudhary emerged as the highest-valued player, joining Calicut Heroes for ₹9.5 lakh.

The auction in Goa also saw Muhammad Nihal C K become the second-highest buy at ₹19 lakh, while Shon T John and Jasjodh Singh were jointly the third-highest acquisitions at ₹15.5 lakh each.

The distribution of significant bids across emerging Indian players underlined the growing importance of domestic talent development within the PVL ecosystem.

Suraj leads Guardians Trophy graduates

Suraj's ₹9.5 lakh move to Calicut Heroes was one of the standout stories of the auction.

His selection followed a strong showing at the Guardians Trophy, where a group of emerging players earned the attention of PVL franchises. The success of these athletes represents an important link between grassroots and professional volleyball. For the PVL, the emergence of these players is also a reflection of the league's efforts over the last four years to create a pathway for young Indian athletes.

Calicut Heroes were particularly aggressive during the auction, adding eight players to their squad. Sameer Chaudhary was their highest buy at ₹10 lakh, followed by Suraj at ₹9.5 lakh and Jaskaran Singh at ₹9 lakh.

Sarthak Singh Jadon was also secured for ₹7.75 lakh, while Anu James went for ₹5.5 lakh. Mahendra Dhurwe and Sujith were acquired for ₹3 lakh each. The franchise also used its Right to Match card to retain Sivanesan V for ₹5.75 lakh.

Shameemudheen tops the auction

The biggest individual deal of the auction belonged to Shameemudheen, who was secured by Kochi Blue Spikers for ₹20 lakh. Muhammad Nihal C K followed closely at ₹19 lakh after being picked by Ahmedabad Defenders.

Chennai Blitz's Shon T John and Kolkata Thunderbolts' Jasjodh Singh completed the top four, with both players attracting bids of ₹15.5 lakh. Telugu Blackhawks also made a significant investment in Tanish Choudhary, who was acquired for ₹14 lakh. The auction therefore featured several sizeable investments, but its broader significance lay in the number of young Indian players receiving opportunities to enter the professional league.

Defending champions Bengaluru Torpedoes took a different approach from most of their rivals. Having won the previous season, Bengaluru made no purchases at the auction and retained their championship-winning squad. The decision reflects the franchise's confidence in the group that delivered the title and gives them continuity heading into Season 5.

The 10 franchises have also been divided into two pools for the new season. Pool A comprises Bengaluru Torpedoes, Calicut Heroes, Ahmedabad Defenders, Chennai Blitz and Mumbai Meteors.

Pool B features Goa Guardians, Telugu Blackhawks, Delhi Toofans, Kolkata Thunderbolts and Kochi Blue Spikers.

Ahmedabad Defenders made five acquisitions, led by Muhammad Nihal C K at ₹19 lakh. Muhammed Iqbal was signed for ₹4 lakh, while Shiva Chandel, Dhruv Chaudhari and Ayush Chaudhary joined for ₹3 lakh each.

Chennai Blitz secured seven players, with Shon T John representing their biggest investment at ₹15.5 lakh. Kunal Das was acquired for ₹6.25 lakh and Mohammed Zamrud for ₹4 lakh, while four players were signed at ₹3 lakh each. Delhi Toofans added five players, with Amrinderpal Singh commanding ₹10 lakh and Vikas Maan ₹8 lakh. Ashok Vicky Gujjar and Lal Sujan M V were both signed for ₹3 lakh.

Goa Guardians made two acquisitions, adding Aman Kumar for ₹5 lakh and Rajat Kumar for ₹3 lakh.

Kochi and Kolkata make major moves

Kochi Blue Spikers made six purchases, led by auction-topping Shameemudheen. They also secured Angamuthu Ramaswamy for ₹9.5 lakh, while Aadith KV, Naveed Khan, Vishesh and Arshak Sinan were bought for ₹3 lakh each.

Kolkata Thunderbolts invested heavily in Jasjodh Singh, who cost ₹15.5 lakh. Ashok Bishnoi and Aditya Rana were acquired for ₹5 lakh each, while Janshad U and Venu C went for ₹4 lakh apiece. Mumbai Meteors made two major acquisitions, signing Prince for ₹5.5 lakh and Mritunjoy Mahanta for ₹5 lakh.

Telugu Blackhawks strengthened their squad with Tanish Choudhary at ₹14 lakh, Vinit Kumar at ₹8 lakh and Mouhsin PA at ₹5 lakh. They also exercised their Right to Match option to retain Niyas Abdul Salam for ₹4 lakh.

The auction has once again highlighted the growing depth of India's volleyball talent pool. The emergence of Suraj Chaudhary and the other Guardians Trophy graduates is particularly significant. Their movement into the PVL demonstrates how domestic competitions can increasingly serve as a bridge between youth development and professional sport.

For the players, the next challenge will be converting auction value into performances on the court. For the league, the objective is broader: creating a sustainable ecosystem where young Indian athletes can progress through structured competition, earn professional opportunities and eventually become established PVL players.

With all 10 squads now finalised, Season 5 promises to be another important chapter in the growth of Indian volleyball.

And for the next generation led by players such as Suraj Chaudhary, the journey from emerging talent to professional star has just taken another significant step.
