The Indian U18 Men’s Hockey Team produced a dominant attacking display to defeat Australia 6-3 and level the four-match series, while the Indian U18 Women’s Team suffered a narrow 2-1 loss against the visitors in Bhopal on Monday.
Played at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) Central SAI Centre in Madhya Pradesh, the double-header once again highlighted the growing intensity and competitiveness between the junior sides of India and Australia. For the Indian men’s side, the victory was especially significant after losing the opening match of the series. The emphatic win now levels the series at 1-1 heading into the final two matches.
Meanwhile, the Indian women fought hard in another closely contested encounter but could not overturn Australia’s early advantage, falling behind 2-1 in the ongoing series.
After a disappointing start to the series, the Indian men responded with far greater attacking urgency and composure. The hosts began aggressively and quickly established control through high pressing and quick passing combinations in midfield. Their intent paid off in the 10th minute when Akash Deep opened the scoring to give India an early lead.
India continued to attack with confidence, and just four minutes later Shahrukh Ali doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish to put Australia under immediate pressure. The visitors attempted to respond through direct counterattacks, and Owen Taylor managed to pull one back for Australia in the 23rd minute. However, India’s attacking rhythm remained relentless.
The second quarter completely shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
Ketan Kushwaha struck in the 25th minute before Romit Pal added another goal just a minute later, giving India a commanding 4-1 advantage. The rapid double strike exposed Australia’s defensive vulnerability as India repeatedly found space through the middle channels. Australia reduced the deficit through Oscar Freeman in the 29th minute and later Jack Weller in the 32nd minute, but India never allowed the match to become truly competitive again.
Kushwaha then scored his second goal of the evening in the 40th minute, finishing off another fluid attacking move, before Ansh Bahutra added India’s sixth goal in the 45th minute. The final quarter saw a far more disciplined Indian defensive performance as the hosts successfully protected their lead without conceding further goals.
Ketan Kushwaha and Midfield Unit Impress
Among India’s standout performers, Ketan Kushwaha’s brace reflected his growing influence within the junior setup. His movement inside the circle consistently troubled the Australian defence, while India’s midfield structure looked significantly sharper compared to the opening game of the series.
The Indian side also showed noticeable improvement in transitional play an area that had previously troubled them against Australia’s physical style. The ability to convert possession dominance into goals will particularly please the coaching staff ahead of the final two matches.
The Indian U18 Women’s Team, meanwhile, endured another frustrating evening despite producing a spirited performance. Australia struck early through Anneliese Cullen in the fifth minute, capitalising on defensive hesitation inside the Indian circle. However, unlike previous matches, India responded positively rather than retreating deeper into defence. The equaliser arrived just before the end of the opening quarter when Sandeepa Kumari finished calmly to make it 1-1, lifting the intensity inside the stadium.
The goal reflected India’s improved attacking confidence and willingness to take risks higher up the pitch. Unfortunately for the hosts, Australia regained the lead almost immediately in the second quarter through Stella Bartholomeusz, whose finish restored the visitors’ advantage in the 17th minute.
From there, the match became a tactical battle.
India’s defensive structure improved considerably in the second half, limiting Australia’s scoring opportunities and forcing the visitors into wider areas. However, the Indian attack struggled to consistently penetrate Australia’s compact defensive setup.
Despite creating a few promising moments late in the game, the hosts could not find another equaliser. Beyond the immediate results, the ongoing series remains an important developmental platform for both Indian teams. Matches against Australia traditionally one of world hockey’s strongest systems provide valuable exposure to high-tempo, physical international hockey at the junior level.
For India’s men, the six-goal performance will significantly boost confidence and validate the aggressive tactical adjustments made after the first game. For the women’s side, although results have not fully gone their way, the narrow scorelines indicate increasing competitiveness against strong opposition. These matches are particularly important as India continues rebuilding its junior pathways ahead of future World Cups, Youth Olympics, and long-term senior national team integration.
With the men’s series now level and the women’s contest still highly competitive, Wednesday’s final matches promise another intense day of junior international hockey in Bhopal. India’s men will now look to build on their momentum and secure a series lead, while the women’s team will aim to bounce back and level their contest against the Australians.
Most importantly, the series continues to reveal the depth of emerging Indian junior talent a critical factor for the future of Indian hockey on the international stage.
