India vs Bangladesh Preview: Defending Champions Begin Asian Champions Trophy Title Defence in Jalandhar

India begin their Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 campaign against Bangladesh on October 27 in Jalandhar, targeting a sixth title and third consecutive crown.
India will begin their campaign at the Men’s Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 against Bangladesh on October 27, aiming to take the first step towards a record-extending sixth title and a third consecutive championship.
International hockey returns to Punjab as the defending champions prepare to open their campaign at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar. Led by Harmanpreet Singh, India enter the ninth edition of the tournament with momentum from their successful Asian Games title defence in Japan and the ambition to continue their dominance in continental hockey.
The opening match, scheduled to begin at 7:20 PM IST, will also feature an elaborate opening ceremony showcasing Punjab’s cultural traditions. With free entry announced for spectators, the hosts can expect strong local interest as they begin their pursuit of another trophy.
India have won the Asian Champions Trophy five times—in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024. Their 2018 triumph was shared with Pakistan after the final in Muscat was abandoned because of rain. The team now has an opportunity to complete a hat-trick of tournament victories after lifting the trophy in Chennai in 2023 and defending it in Hulunbuir, China, in 2024.
India’s most recent title came through a narrow 1-0 victory over China in the final, with Jugraj Singh scoring the decisive goal. That result demonstrated the team’s ability to manage a tight contest against a determined opponent, an attribute that will be important throughout the current campaign.
Coach Craig Fulton will look to build on the team’s recent success, with the Indian side arriving after defending its Asian Games gold medal. The challenge is to transfer that form into a tournament featuring five other Asian teams, all competing for the continental crown.
Manpreet Singh’s absence presents an early challenge
India suffered a setback before the tournament when former captain and experienced midfielder Manpreet Singh was ruled out because of a calf injury. Vivek Sagar Prasad has replaced him in the squad.
Manpreet’s absence removes an experienced presence from the midfield, making the distribution of responsibilities among the remaining players particularly important. Vivek’s inclusion provides India with another option in that department, but the team will need to maintain its balance between midfield control and attacking transitions.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh will be central to India’s leadership as the tournament begins. Having guided the team to consecutive Asian Games gold medals for the first time, he brings experience of managing expectations in major competitions.
Harmanpreet has also emphasised that India will not underestimate any opponent. “Every team is here to compete and win the tournament. All the teams are strong, and we do not want to take any opponent lightly,” the captain said.
He added that the team had gained experience and maturity, and would approach every match with the same mindset while respecting each opponent. That approach will be important against Bangladesh, who will be eager to make a strong impression against the defending champions.
For Bangladesh, the opening fixture presents an immediate test against one of the strongest sides in Asian hockey. Playing India in the opening match will require discipline and concentration, particularly when dealing with the hosts’ attacking pressure.
India, meanwhile, will want to begin with a convincing performance and establish their rhythm early in the competition. A strong start would help the team settle into the round-robin format while giving the coaching staff an opportunity to assess combinations ahead of more demanding encounters.
The match also carries significance for the local audience. Jalandhar has a rich hockey heritage, and the return of international competition offers supporters an opportunity to watch the Indian team on home soil.
India’s road to the semi-finals
The six participating teams India, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea will play a single round-robin league, with each side facing the other five teams once. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals.
India’s league-stage schedule is:
October 27: India vs Bangladesh — 7:20 PM IST
October 29: India vs China — 7:00 PM IST
October 30: India vs Japan — 7:00 PM IST
November 1: India vs Malaysia — 7:00 PM IST
November 2: India vs South Korea — 7:00 PM IST
The league matches will take place at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar. The tournament will then move to the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali for the semi-finals on November 4 and the medal matches on November 5.
Malaysia, who finished runners-up to India at the Asian Games, will be among the key challengers. Japan and South Korea also bring established continental experience, while China will look to build on its recent final appearance.
India’s match against China on October 29 will be particularly significant given their meeting in the previous edition’s final.
The tournament has special significance for Punjab, a traditional centre of Indian hockey that has produced generations of players who have represented the country internationally. Jalandhar’s association with the sport makes it a fitting venue for the opening stage.
The opening ceremony will feature Bhangra, Gidha and Gatka performances, alongside music and a laser show, adding a cultural dimension to the start of the competition.
For India, however, the focus will quickly shift to the pitch. The defending champions will aim to begin with a victory over Bangladesh, build consistency through the league stage and secure a place in the semi-finals. A sixth title would further strengthen India’s standing in the competition’s history.
The first step comes on October 27, when Harmanpreet Singh’s team begins its title defence in front of Punjab’s hockey supporters.
