Ayush Shetty staged a tremendous comeback to defeat China's Weng Hong Yang in three games. The first game saw Shetty start on an attacking note, putting pressure on Weng. After the initial struggle, the Chinese shuttler responded with consistent smashes and controlled the rallies to keep the Indian under pressure. At the mid-game interval, Weng held a commanding 11-6 lead. After the break, it was one-way traffic as the Chinese player comfortably wrapped up the opening game 21-8.
Both players began the second game on even terms, exchanging points in the early stages before Shetty started asserting himself and putting Weng under pressure. It remained a closely fought affair, with Weng taking a slender 11-10 lead into the interval. After the break, Weng looked set to close out the match, but Shetty fought back strongly, taking four consecutive points to level the score at 15-15. Facing a match point, the Indian showed tremendous courage and composure to edge the second game 22-20.
After the players were tied at 2-2 in the deciding game, Shetty raised his level and kept Weng under immense pressure. At the mid-game interval, the Indian enjoyed a commanding 11-5 advantage. After the break, Shetty maintained his composure and controlled the proceedings to complete a remarkable comeback with a 21-15 victory. He will next face Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong.
The mixed doubles pairing of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde gained revenge over Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang of Chinese Taipei with a dominant straight-game victory. Kapoor and Gadde never allowed their opponents to settle into the contest and controlled the match throughout, winning 21-14, 21-14. They will now face fourth-seeded French pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the next round.
It was heartbreak for HS Prannoy, who suffered a thrilling three-game defeat against Ireland's Nhat Nguyen. Nguyen began the first game on a positive note with sharp rallies and excellent net play. At the mid-game break, the Irish shuttler led 11-7. After the interval, Nguyen looked on course to take the game comfortably with a 15-10 advantage before Prannoy showed signs of a comeback. However, Nguyen held firm to claim the opening game 21-17.
Nguyen started the second game aggressively, keeping Prannoy under constant pressure and racing to an 8-2 lead. The Indian then produced a stunning comeback, winning nine consecutive points to take an 11-8 advantage at the break. Despite a brief fightback from the Irishman, Prannoy maintained his momentum and levelled the match by taking the second game 21-16.
Nguyen started the decider in similar fashion, taking an early 7-2 lead. Prannoy once again responded with a spirited performance, applying pressure and gradually working his way back into the contest. At the mid-game interval, the Indian held a narrow 11-10 lead. After the break, both players battled for every point in a tense finish, but Nguyen held his nerve at the crucial moments to seal a 21-19 victory.
India's hopes in men's doubles suffered a setback when Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were forced to retire during their opening-round match against Malaysia's Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai. With the Malaysians leading 11-6, the Indian pair withdrew after Satwik experienced a shoulder problem.
It was also curtains for Unnati Hooda, who went down to former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in straight games. Okuhara produced a dominant display in the opening game, maintaining consistent pressure on the young Indian and taking it 21-14.
Unnati began the second game positively, producing some lovely shots to keep the Japanese star under pressure. At the mid-game interval, the Indian enjoyed an encouraging 11-7 lead. However, Okuhara fought back strongly after the break, reeling off a string of points before eventually sealing the contest 21-15.
