Tanvi Patri Stuns World No. 51 Rachel Chan to Reach Pontianak International Challenge Final

India’s teenage badminton sensation Tanvi Patri has produced another statement performance on the international stage, defeating Canada’s World No. 51 and top seed Rachel Chan to reach the women’s singles final of the Polytron Pontianak International Challenge 2026.

The 15-year-old Indian, currently ranked World No. 132, defeated the much higher-ranked Canadian 21-9, 21-19 in the semi-final to continue a remarkable run in Indonesia. While the opening game was controlled by Tanvi, the second turned into a much closer battle before the young Indian held her nerve to seal a straight-games victory.

Tanvi will now play for the Pontianak International Challenge title, with Kim Min Sun of South Korea awaiting her in the final.

For a player still only 15, the manner in which Tanvi has navigated the draw has been particularly impressive. She has defeated players ranked significantly above her at almost every stage of the tournament and has now earned a place in another senior international final.

The semi-final represented one of the biggest tests of Tanvi's tournament. Rachel Chan entered the contest as the top seed and World No. 51, giving the Canadian a significant ranking advantage over the Indian youngster.

Tanvi, however, showed no hesitation. She immediately established control in the opening game and raced to a convincing 21-9 victory. Her ability to maintain the intensity against a vastly more experienced opponent gave her a 1-0 lead and put Chan under considerable pressure.

The second game was a completely different contest. Chan responded strongly and stayed close to Tanvi throughout the game. The Canadian's experience began to show as she attempted to force a deciding third game, but Tanvi remained composed during the crucial closing stages.

The Indian eventually prevailed 21-19, completing a 2-0 victory and booking her place in the final. It was another major scalp for a player who has rapidly emerged as one of India's most promising young women's singles prospects.

Remarkable run through Pontianak

Tanvi's journey to the final has been filled with difficult challenges. She began her campaign against Indonesia's Hani Miftasari in the round of 64. The opening match immediately tested her resilience as she lost the first game 14-21.

Rather than allowing the setback to derail her campaign, Tanvi fought back brilliantly. She won the second game 22-20 before completing the comeback with a 21-13 victory in the decider. The next round saw her face Singapore's Lee Xinyi, ranked World No. 113.

This time, Tanvi was completely dominant. She defeated Lee 21-5, 21-16 to move into the round of 16.

There, she faced fellow Indian Rujula Ramu, who was ranked World No. 133. Tanvi once again produced a commanding performance, winning 21-10, 21-10 to book her place in the quarter-finals.

The quarter-final brought arguably her biggest challenge before the semi-final. Tanvi faced Thailand's Pornpicha Choeikeewong, the fourth seed and World No. 89.

Despite the significant ranking difference, Tanvi controlled the contest from start to finish. She won the opening game 21-9 and followed it with a 21-15 victory in the second to complete another straight-games win. The result sent her into the semi-finals, where she faced the tournament's top seed.

And once again, Tanvi delivered.

Tanvi's rapid rise is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The Indian is a former U-15 Asian champion, and her performances in Pontianak demonstrate that she is already capable of competing successfully against much older and higher-ranked players on the senior international circuit.

Her current ranking of World No. 132 does not necessarily reflect the level she has displayed during this tournament. In five matches, Tanvi has defeated players from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Canada and India. Most importantly, several of those victories have come against opponents ranked considerably higher than her.

Her victory over Rachel Chan is particularly significant. Beating a World No. 51 and top seed in straight games at just 15 years old is a result that could provide a major boost to Tanvi's confidence and ranking ambitions. The youngster now appears to be on the verge of breaking into the world's top 100 if she can continue producing results at this level.

One match away from the title

Tanvi's remarkable journey now has one final chapter in Pontianak. She will face World No. 82 Kim Min Sun of South Korea in the final, giving the Indian another opportunity to defeat a higher-ranked opponent.

The final will be another significant test of Tanvi's physical endurance and mental strength. She has already played five demanding matches, including a three-game comeback in the opening round and difficult encounters against Choeikeewong and Chan.

But reaching the final itself is already a major achievement. Tanvi has shown that she can recover from losing a game, handle pressure against seeded opponents and close out tight games when required.
