India's Jadumani Singh defeated Scotland's Aaron Cullen 5-0 in the men's 55kg boxing event to advance to the pre-quarterfinals at CWG 2026.

Indian boxer Jadumani Singh announced himself as a serious medal contender at the Commonwealth Games 2026, producing a commanding display to defeat Scotland's Aaron Cullen by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the men's 55kg round of 32 on Friday.

Fighting in front of a partisan home crowd at the Scottish Event Campus, the 21-year-old Manipuri boxer showcased superior technique, ring craft and tactical awareness to comfortably outbox the European U-23 silver medallist and book his place in the pre-quarterfinals.

The victory sets up a highly anticipated clash against Pakistan's Sumama Rehman, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

For Jadumani, however, the performance was about more than just progressing to the next round. It marked the continuation of a remarkable transformation after moving up to the 55kg category, a switch that has allowed him to compete without the exhausting weight cuts that had defined much of his early career.

For years, Jadumani's toughest opponent arrived before he even stepped into the ring. Competing in the men's 50kg category, the reigning national champion routinely had to shed nearly 10 kilograms before major competitions. The drastic weight cuts affected not only his physical strength but also his recovery and overall preparation.

The move to the 55kg division has changed that equation entirely. Freed from the constant burden of cutting weight, Jadumani has looked stronger, sharper and far more comfortable inside the ring. The decision has already paid dividends, helping him qualify for both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

Against Cullen, that renewed confidence was evident from the opening bell.

With thousands of Scottish supporters backing Cullen, the home boxer began energetically, looking to use his height and reach advantage to keep Jadumani at bay. The Indian, however, had other plans. Rather than allowing Cullen to dictate the distance, Jadumani consistently stepped inside behind crisp jabs before unleashing quick combinations that repeatedly found their target.

His aggressive approach prevented the Scot from settling into his preferred rhythm. Every time Cullen attempted to establish his range, Jadumani closed the gap intelligently, neutralising the physical advantages of his opponent. The judges were unanimous in awarding the opening round to the Indian, who controlled both the pace and tempo of the contest.

The second round proved to be the most competitive phase of the bout. Encouraged by the home crowd, Cullen began moving more effectively around the ring, using lateral movement to create openings. The European U-23 silver medallist landed several clean punches during the round and briefly caught Jadumani off balance.

For a few moments, it appeared the momentum might be shifting. Yet Jadumani quickly adapted. Instead of allowing Cullen to build confidence, the Indian returned to his aggressive style, increasing both his work rate and punch variety. His combinations became sharper, while his ability to disguise attacks made it increasingly difficult for Cullen to anticipate incoming punches.

By the end of the round, Jadumani had once again established control.

All five judges awarded him another 10-9 round.

With a lead already established, Jadumani entered the third round determined to leave no room for doubt. The Indian continued to dictate the exchanges, maintaining relentless pressure while displaying excellent defensive awareness whenever Cullen attempted to counterattack. His footwork remained disciplined, allowing him to move in and out of range efficiently before landing another clean scoring combination. Throughout the contest, Jadumani consistently found the extra punch in every exchange.

His accuracy, timing and tactical discipline separated him from his opponent. By the final bell, there was little uncertainty regarding the outcome. All five judges awarded every round 10-9 in Jadumani's favour, resulting in a comprehensive 5-0 unanimous decision.

It was a performance that reflected complete control from start to finish.

While both boxers entered the contest with naturally attacking styles, Jadumani demonstrated why he is regarded as one of India's brightest young boxing talents. Rather than relying purely on aggression, he combined intelligent movement with effective shot selection. His ability to disguise punches repeatedly forced Cullen into defensive positions, while his compact combinations ensured he consistently landed the cleaner scoring blows. Defensively, the Manipuri boxer also impressed.

Even when Cullen enjoyed his best spell during the second round, Jadumani remained composed, adjusted his tactics and prevented the Scot from building sustained momentum. That balance between attack and defence ultimately proved decisive.

Mentored by a Boxing Legend

Jadumani's development has been guided by one of India's greatest boxers, L. Sarita Devi, whose influence has helped shape his technical foundation and competitive mindset. Under her mentorship, the young boxer has steadily emerged as one of the country's leading prospects, winning national honours before earning qualification for major international events.

His transition to the 55kg category initially raised questions about whether he could remain competitive against naturally bigger opponents. Those doubts have largely disappeared. The victory over Cullen offered further evidence that the additional weight has enhanced rather than hindered his performances.

Jadumani now advances to the pre-quarterfinals, where he will face Pakistan's Sumama Rehman in what promises to be one of the most anticipated bouts of the tournament. Having produced such a convincing opening performance, the Indian will enter that contest with considerable confidence. More importantly, his display against Cullen demonstrated that he possesses the technical quality and tactical maturity required to challenge for a medal.

For Indian boxing, Jadumani's victory represents another encouraging start at the Commonwealth Games. Defeating a home favourite in front of a passionate Scottish crowd is never an easy task, but the 21-year-old handled both the atmosphere and the occasion with remarkable composure. Free from the burden of severe weight cuts and competing with renewed confidence in the 55kg division, Jadumani has taken an important first step in Glasgow.

If he can maintain this level of precision, aggression and ring intelligence, the Manipuri boxer could emerge as one of India's strongest medal hopes in the competition.
