Lakshya Sen ruled out of Thomas Cup 2026 semifinal as India reshuffle lineup against France

Lakshya Sen will miss India’s crucial semifinal clash against France national badminton team at the Thomas Cup 2026 after sustaining an elbow injury during India’s quarterfinal victory over Chinese Taipei.
The development was officially confirmed by the Badminton Association of India ahead of the semifinal in Horsens, Denmark, bringing a major setback to the Indian camp just hours before one of the biggest ties of the tournament. According to a statement released by BAI Honorary General Secretary Sanjay Mishra, Lakshya suffered an impact injury to his elbow during the physically demanding quarterfinal encounter, which involved multiple dives and extended rallies.
“Our men’s singles player, Lakshya Sen, will not be participating in today’s semi-final tie against France in the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2026. Lakshya sustained an impact to his elbow following an intense quarterfinal match that involved multiple dives,” the statement read. Following a thorough evaluation by the team’s medical staff, the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to allow Lakshya adequate recovery time and ensure he is in optimal condition for the final, should India progress.”
The statement further added that Lakshya remains under close medical supervision. “He is currently under close medical observation and receiving all necessary support. The team remains confident and optimistic about his swift recovery and return to peak form.”
The absence of Lakshya is a significant blow for India considering the form he displayed in the quarterfinals. The former All England finalist had produced one of the matches of the tournament against Chou Tien Chen, saving two match points before sealing a dramatic three-game victory that gave India early momentum in their eventual 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei. His energy, defensive retrievals and attacking control had once again highlighted why he remains India’s most dependable men’s singles player in team competitions.
Without him, India’s semifinal strategy undergoes a complete transformation. The Indian team management has now entrusted the singles responsibilities to Ayush Shetty, Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy against a French side that has emerged as the surprise package of the tournament.
Ayush Shetty will open the tie against Christo Popov in what could become a defining moment in the youngster’s rapidly growing career. Ayush has remained unbeaten throughout the competition and arrives with confidence after defeating reigning All England champion Lin Chun-Yi in straight games during the quarterfinals.

The opening rubber now becomes even more important for India. With Lakshya unavailable, India will desperately need Ayush to continue his remarkable form and provide the team an early advantage. Christo Popov, however, brings pace, aggression and previous winning experience against the Indian youngster.
The second singles will feature Kidambi Srikanth against Alex Lanier in a fascinating clash between experience and emerging European talent. Srikanth’s role becomes even more critical in Lakshya’s absence, especially considering his historic contributions during India’s 2022 Thomas Cup-winning campaign. Lanier, meanwhile, has rapidly developed into one of Europe’s brightest young players and has played a major role in France reaching their maiden Thomas Cup semifinal.
HS Prannoy will take on Toma Junior Popov in the third singles rubber. Prannoy’s ability to handle pressure and deliver in long physical encounters could become vital if the tie extends deep into the contest. France’s rise has been one of the stories of the tournament. After stunning Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinals, the French side enters the semifinal carrying enormous confidence. Their unusual structure, led by the versatile Popov brothers playing across singles and doubles, has created tactical complications for opponents throughout the week.
India will also rely heavily on their doubles combinations. Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun are expected to feature in the second doubles rubber, while India’s biggest weapon remains the star pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The former world No. 1 duo will likely enter as favourites against the Popov brothers if the semifinal reaches the deciding fifth match. Still, Lakshya’s absence inevitably changes the overall balance of the tie. On paper, France already held a slight edge in singles depth based on rankings and recent European circuit performances. Losing India’s top singles player further increases the challenge for the 2022 champions. At the same time, India have repeatedly shown in team events that resilience often matters more than rankings alone.
The Indian camp will now hope that the injury remains temporary and that Lakshya can recover in time should India advance to another historic Thomas Cup final.
For now, though, India must attempt to overcome France without one of their biggest stars on court.
