Lakshya Sen Storms into Hylo Open 2026 Final with Commanding Win Over Toma Popov

Lakshya Sen defeated Toma Junior Popov 21-17, 21-13 to reach the Hylo Open 2026 final, setting up a title clash against Anders Antonsen.
Lakshya Sen produced one of his most convincing performances of the season to storm into the men's singles final of the Hylo Open 2026, defeating higher-ranked Frenchman Toma Junior Popov in straight games in Saarbrücken.
The Indian secured a 21-17, 21-13 victory in the semifinal, registering his first win over Popov on the senior circuit and moving within one victory of another major title. The result also marks Sen's second major final of 2026, following his runner-up finish at the All England Open earlier in the year. More importantly, the performance offered a glimpse of the Indian shuttler playing with the authority, speed and shot-making quality that have made him one of the most dangerous players on the international circuit.
Against Popov, ranked World No. 12, Sen combined disciplined defence with an attacking game built around pace and precision. He rarely allowed the Frenchman to dictate the exchanges and consistently found ways to turn defensive positions into opportunities to take control of rallies.
The opening game was a closely contested affair, with both players trading points during an extended physical battle. Popov, who came into the semifinal in good form, attempted to challenge Sen through the pace and intensity of the rallies.
However, Sen made the stronger start and established an early advantage. His ability to absorb pressure and return difficult shots frustrated Popov, who struggled to find consistent openings against the Indian's defence.
Sen's early lead proved important as the Frenchman began to raise his level. Popov gradually found his rhythm and launched a comeback, reducing what had been a six-point deficit at 9-15 to just two points at 15-17.
For a brief period, the momentum appeared to be shifting. Sen, however, responded at the right moment. Rather than allowing Popov to complete the comeback, he tightened his game and won four of the next five points to close out the opening game.
The first game gave Sen the platform he needed. It also demonstrated his ability to manage a difficult passage of play without losing control of the contest.
Defensive discipline and attacking pace make the difference
If the opening game was about managing pressure, the second was a demonstration of Sen's ability to impose himself on an opponent. The Indian continued to defend exceptionally well, making it difficult for Popov to finish rallies. The Frenchman found himself having to play additional shots to win points, while Sen remained composed and waited for opportunities to accelerate the pace.
One of the defining features of the match was Sen's fast, flat game. He repeatedly used quick exchanges to put Popov under pressure, preventing the Frenchman from settling into longer attacking sequences. Popov struggled to break through the Indian's defensive structure and was often beaten by the speed of Sen's responses.
Sen also displayed impressive shot-making from the beginning of the match. His ability to combine controlled placement with sudden changes in pace meant Popov was rarely able to establish sustained momentum.
The second game was considerably more comfortable for the Indian. With his confidence growing and Popov unable to find a reliable way past his defence, Sen moved steadily towards the finish line.
He eventually sealed the semifinal 21-13, completing a straight-games victory that underlined the quality of his performance.
The victory carries importance beyond a place in the final. Popov is a higher-ranked opponent, and Sen had not previously beaten the Frenchman on the senior circuit. For Sen, the result represents a significant step forward in a season that has included moments of promise but has also demanded consistency.
Reaching the final of the All England Open earlier in 2026 established his ability to compete for titles at the highest level. His run in Saarbrücken now gives him another opportunity to convert a strong tournament into silverware.
The performance against Popov was particularly encouraging because Sen appeared to be playing closer to his potential. His defence was difficult to penetrate, his attacking transitions were sharp, and his shot selection remained effective even when the Frenchman threatened to close the gap.
It was a performance built on control rather than unnecessary risk, with Sen choosing the right moments to take charge of rallies.
Danish challenge awaits in the final
Sen will now face Denmark's Anders Antonsen in the men's singles final. The final will also provide Sen with an opportunity to add another important title to his career and complete a memorable week in Germany.
India's campaign has already received a major boost with PV Sindhu also securing a place in the women's singles final. Sindhu defeated Germany's Amalie Nissen Schulz 21-12, 21-10 in just 28 minutes, continuing her strong run after finishing runner-up at the French Open. The double Olympic medallist controlled the contest from the outset, winning 42 of the 64 points played.
With Sindhu and Sen both reaching the finals, India will have two opportunities to fight for the Hylo Open 2026 titles.
For Sen, however, the immediate focus will be on carrying his semifinal momentum into the championship match. His victory over Popov was not merely a passage into the final; it was one of his most assured performances of the season.
