Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi Reaches US Open Junior Doubles Semifinals

Indian tennis prospect Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi continued her encouraging run at the US Open Junior Championships in New York, reaching the girls’ doubles semifinals alongside Ukraine’s Antonina Sushkova.

The Indo-Ukrainian combination produced a composed performance on Thursday, defeating the fourth-seeded Russian pair of Felitsata Dorofeeva-Rybas and Anna Pushkareva 6-4, 6-4 to secure their place in the last four.

The victory gives Maaya another opportunity to make a deep run at a Grand Slam junior event during an increasingly promising season. With the US Open Junior Championships still offering the possibility of a title, the Indian youngster will now turn her attention to a semifinal against American wild cards Annika Penickova and Kristina Penickova.

Maaya and Sushkova controlled the key moments of their quarterfinal, taking both sets by identical 6-4 margins. Against a seeded Russian pairing, they were able to maintain their advantage through the decisive stages and close out the match in straight sets.

For Maaya, the result adds another significant milestone to a season in which she has continued to gain experience at the highest level of junior tennis.

The Indian has previously trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy, an experience that has formed part of her development as she looks to establish herself among the leading players of her generation. Standing between them and a place in the final are Annika and Kristina Penickova, a pair that presents an altogether different challenge.

The American sisters earned their semifinal berth with a straight-sets victory over Alyssa James and Polina Skliar. They will enter the contest with considerable junior Grand Slam pedigree, having won both the Australian Open Junior Championships and Wimbledon Junior Championships last year.

That record makes the Penickova sisters the more established pairing on paper, but Maaya and Sushkova have already shown that they can overcome a seeded combination. The semifinal will therefore pit an Indian-Ukrainian team trying to extend its run against an American pair with a proven record of success at the junior Grand Slam level.

For Maaya, the opportunity is about more than simply adding another result to her season.
