Niki Poonacha Set for US Open Debut with Gonzalo Escobar After Breakthrough 2026

Niki Poonacha’s remarkable 2026 season is about to reach another major milestone as the Indian doubles specialist prepares for his Grand Slam debut as a pair with Ecuador’s Gonzalo Escobar.

The duo have earned their place in the draw as alternates following the withdrawal of Peru’s Buse and Argentina’s Trungelliti, setting up a first-round clash against the in-form Czech-Austrian combination of Petr Nouza and Joel Oberleitner.

The match is scheduled for around 11:30 PM IST, with Poonacha and Escobar facing opponents who arrive with significant momentum after winning the ATP 250 Winston-Salem title last week.

For Poonacha, the occasion is another landmark in what has already been a career-defining season.

Poonacha has been one of the most consistent performers on the ATP Challenger doubles circuit in 2026. The Indian has already won six ATP Challenger doubles titles this season, with two of those victories coming alongside Escobar. Their latest triumph came at the Indiana Hardcourt Championships in Brownsburg, USA, where they completed an unbeaten week without dropping a set.

The sixth title of Poonacha’s 2026 campaign was secured with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over second seeds Robert Cash and Bart Stevens in the final.

It was also the 12th ATP Challenger doubles title of Poonacha’s career. The Brownsburg run demonstrated the growing chemistry between the Indian and Ecuadorian. They defeated Landau and Andre 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round, followed that with a 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinal victory over Lammons and Withrow, and then survived a tight semifinal against New Zealand’s Michael Venus? The final was considerably more straightforward. Poonacha and Escobar controlled the contest against Cash and Stevens to win 6-4, 6-1.

Their record since joining forces has now reached 10-1, an extraordinary start for a relatively new partnership.

Poonacha's rise has also been reflected in the ATP rankings.  That rise has strengthened India's presence inside the ATP doubles Top 100.

Poonacha is currently the third-highest-ranked Indian in doubles, behind Yuki Bhambri and N. Sriram Balaji. Balaji has reached No. 51, while Anirudh Chandrasekar has also climbed to a career-high No. 84. For Poonacha, however, the No. 81 ranking is more than a number. It reflects the consistency he has built throughout a season in which winning has become a regular occurrence.

His six Challenger titles in 2026 have provided the foundation for that climb.

Escobar partnership has changed the equation

Poonacha and Escobar have quickly developed into a formidable Challenger-level combination. Their two Challenger titles together have come amid a broader run of success that includes an impressive showing at the ATP 250 Los Cabos, where they reached the semifinals.

That result demonstrated that their partnership can compete beyond the Challenger circuit. Their 10-1 record together only strengthens the argument.

Now they face a completely different test.

Their opponents, Nouza and Oberleitner, will provide an immediate challenge. The Czech-Austrian pair enter the contest fresh from winning the ATP 250 Winston-Salem title, giving them considerable confidence heading into the Grand Slam. For Poonacha and Escobar, the task will be to replicate the composure and consistency that have taken them to six Challenger titles this year while adapting to the intensity of a Grand Slam environment.

For Poonacha, this will not technically be his first appearance at a Grand Slam. He made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open earlier in 2026, partnering Thailand’s Pruchya Isaro. That remains his only other Grand Slam appearance.

This time, though, the circumstances are different.

He enters with a new partner, a career-high ranking and a remarkable body of work behind him.

Poonacha’s breakthrough has also arrived at an encouraging time for Indian men's doubles tennis. With Balaji at No. 51, Poonacha at No. 81 and Chandrasekar at No. 84, India now have three players inside the ATP doubles Top 100. That depth is significant for a country with a long tradition of success in men's doubles.

Poonacha's journey is particularly intriguing because his 2026 season has not been built around one isolated breakthrough.
