Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi Wins Maiden Professional Singles Title at 17 with W35 Lagos Triumph

Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi announced her arrival on the professional tennis circuit with an impressive title-winning performance at the W35 Lagos tournament, capturing her maiden professional singles crown at just 17 years of age.
The Indian teenager defeated Spain’s Celia Cervino Ruiz 6-4, 6-2 in the final, completing a remarkable week in which she progressed from qualifying to lift the trophy without dropping a set in the main draw.
Maaya’s triumph was particularly significant given the quality of the opposition she overcame. Starting her campaign as a qualifier, she defeated top seed Justina Mikulskyte in the opening round before continuing her run against higher-ranked opponents. She eventually capped the week with a convincing performance in the final, demonstrating the composure and consistency needed to succeed at the professional level.
The achievement also carried added significance for Indian women’s tennis, which continues to look for emerging players capable of making a sustained impact on the international circuit.
Maaya entered the tournament ranked World No. 1038, considerably below several of the players she encountered during the week. However, her ranking did not reflect the level she produced on court. Her campaign began with a statement victory over top seed Mikulskyte, winning 7-6, 6-1. Beating the tournament’s leading seed in the opening round provided an early indication that the teenager could compete against more experienced professional players.
Rather than allowing that result to remain an isolated upset, Maaya maintained her standard in the following rounds. She defeated Bonardi 6-2, 6-0 before overcoming Tian 6-2, 6-1, continuing to control matches against different opponents.
The consistency of those performances was one of the defining features of her title run. Maaya did not merely produce one standout result; she followed it with authoritative wins that took her closer to the championship.
Her semifinal ended with a walkover, giving her additional recovery time before the final. Cervino Ruiz, meanwhile, advanced after defeating Yelyzaveta Kotliar 7-5, 6-4. That difference in preparation gave Maaya an opportunity to enter the title match with greater physical freshness. However, she still had to overcome an opponent with considerably more experience on the professional tour.
Maaya Overcomes Cervino Ruiz in the Final
The final presented a substantial test for the Indian teenager. Cervino Ruiz entered the match ranked World No. 587, placing her well above Maaya in the rankings and making her experience an important factor in the contest.
Maaya responded with a composed performance, winning the opening set 6-4 before taking the second 6-2 to secure the title.
The result reflected the form she had shown throughout the tournament. Having already defeated the top seed and several higher-ranked opponents, she carried that momentum into the final and completed the job in straight sets. For a 17-year-old making her way through the early stages of a professional career, the ability to sustain that level across a tournament is encouraging. Her performance also demonstrated that she could handle the pressure of a final against a more highly ranked opponent.
The title represents an important first milestone, although the next challenge will be to build on the result and produce similar performances across future tournaments.
Maaya’s success in Lagos extended beyond the singles competition. Partnering Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Kotliar, she also won the doubles title after a comeback victory over China’s Min Liu and Italy’s Carlotta Moccia. The Indian-Ukrainian pair lost the opening set 0-6 but responded strongly to take the second 6-2. They then held their nerve in the deciding super tiebreak, winning 10-7 to complete the turnaround.
Recovering from a bagel set to win a final requires both tactical adjustment and mental resilience. The result gave Maaya a second title in Lagos and made the tournament an especially productive outing. Winning both the singles and doubles competitions also provided her with valuable competitive experience across different match situations. While singles success depends heavily on individual execution, doubles requires coordination, communication and the ability to respond collectively to pressure.
For Maaya, the two titles offered complementary achievements at a crucial stage of her development.
Maaya trains at Elite Tennis Center in France, where her development is focused on the transition from elite junior competition to the professional game. Her Lagos performance offered an encouraging indication that the work is beginning to translate into results at senior level.
Her World No. 1038 ranking should be viewed in the context of her age and professional experience. The teenager has followed a relatively limited professional schedule, and one successful tournament does not automatically establish where she will ultimately rank. However, beating the top seed and defeating a higher-ranked finalist provides tangible evidence of her competitive potential.
For Indian women’s tennis, emerging players capable of converting their junior promise into professional titles are particularly valuable. Maaya’s success is an encouraging development, although sustained progress will depend on maintaining fitness, gaining experience against stronger opposition and producing consistent results over time.
At 17, she has plenty of development ahead of her. The W35 Lagos title is not a guarantee of future success, but it is a meaningful first step.
By winning the singles crown without dropping a set in the main draw and adding the doubles trophy through a comeback victory, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi leaves Lagos with two titles and a significant boost to her professional ambitions. Her next task is to turn this breakthrough week into the foundation for a longer-term presence on the international tennis circuit.
