Indian table tennis continues to make significant strides on the international stage, and the latest ITTF Men's Doubles World Rankings have delivered another landmark achievement. Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah have climbed to a career-best World No. 3, becoming one of the highest-ranked Indian men's doubles pairs in history.

The achievement is a reward for months of consistent performances on the World Table Tennis (WTT) circuit, where the Indian duo has steadily established itself among the world's elite. From winning titles to defeating reigning world champions, Manav and Manush have emerged as one of the most formidable doubles combinations in international table tennis.

Their rise is not the result of one standout tournament but a sustained period of excellence that has seen them challenge and defeat some of the biggest names in the sport.

Breaking into the world's top five is a difficult task in modern table tennis, but staying there requires remarkable consistency. Over the past year, Manav and Manush have repeatedly delivered strong performances across multiple WTT events, accumulating valuable ranking points while proving they can compete with the very best pairs in the world.

Their climb to World No. 3 follows an earlier rise to World No. 4 after winning the WTT Contender Lagos title, a victory that announced them as genuine contenders on the global stage. Rather than slowing down after that success, the pair continued to build momentum through strong performances at higher-level tournaments, eventually reaching another career milestone.

The latest rankings underline how far the partnership has progressed and reflect the growing stature of Indian table tennis on the international circuit.

One of the defining moments in their recent journey came at the WTT United States Smash 2026. Seeded fifth in the tournament, the Indian pair faced one of the toughest possible challenges in the Round of 16 against reigning world champions Shunsuke Togami and Sora Matsushima of Japan. The Japanese duo entered the contest as overwhelming favourites, but Manav and Manush produced one of the finest performances of their careers.

After dropping the opening game 8-11, the Indians responded with remarkable composure to win the next three games 11-8, 11-8 and 11-7, completing a memorable 3-1 victory. The result sent the Indian pair into the quarterfinals while also reinforcing their credentials as genuine medal contenders at major international events. More importantly, defeating the reigning world champions demonstrated that their rise in the rankings has been built on performances against the strongest opposition rather than favourable draws.

The United States Smash was only the latest chapter in an impressive season. Earlier in the year, the duo captured the men's doubles title at the WTT Contender Lagos, earning crucial ranking points and boosting their confidence ahead of a busy international calendar. Their consistency continued at the WTT Star Contender Ljubljana, where they defeated the world No. 22 French pair in the opening round while Manush Shah also impressed in the singles event by defeating World No. 35 Chen Junsong in a thrilling five-game contest.

Performing consistently across different tournaments, continents and playing conditions has become one of the defining strengths of the Indian partnership. Unlike previous Indian doubles combinations that occasionally produced upset victories, Manav and Manush are now regularly reaching the latter stages of international events.

The timing of their rise could not be better. Both players have been named in India's men's squad for the upcoming Asian Games, alongside experienced campaigners G. Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai and rising youngster Payas Jain. With their current World No. 3 ranking, there is a strong possibility that the Indian pair could enter the Asian Games as one of the top four seeded combinations.

That would provide a more favourable draw and significantly improve India's medal prospects in the men's doubles competition. Given the strength of Asian table tennis, where China, Japan, South Korea and Chinese Taipei traditionally dominate, entering as a top seed is a major advantage.

The success of Manav and Manush reflects the broader growth of Indian table tennis over the past decade. Indian players are no longer viewed merely as participants capable of causing occasional upsets. Instead, they are increasingly becoming regular contenders for titles on the WTT circuit. The emergence of strong doubles partnerships has been particularly encouraging, with India consistently challenging established table tennis powers in recent international competitions.

Manush Shah has also enjoyed success in mixed doubles alongside Diya Chitale, with the pair winning gold at WTT Contender Lagos, highlighting India's growing depth across multiple disciplines. Meanwhile, several young Indian paddlers continue to climb the rankings, creating healthy competition within the national setup.

While reaching World No. 3 is a historic milestone, both players will know that the rankings are only one measure of success. The bigger targets now lie ahead. The Asian Games, World Championships and future WTT Grand Smash events present opportunities to convert consistent performances into major international medals.

Maintaining a top-three ranking will require continued excellence against the world's strongest pairs, but recent performances suggest the Indian duo possesses both the quality and confidence to remain among the global elite.

For Indian table tennis, the rise of Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah is another indication that the gap with the traditional powerhouses continues to narrow. Their victories over reigning world champions, title-winning performances on the WTT circuit and climb to World No. 3 represent more than personal achievements—they symbolise the growing strength of Indian table tennis on the world stage.

With the Asian Games approaching and several major tournaments still to come this season, the country's most successful men's doubles partnership has already laid a strong foundation. The challenge now is to build on this historic ranking and translate their remarkable consistency into podium finishes at the biggest events in international table tennis.
