Manpreet Singh Becomes India’s Most-Capped Hockey Player, Hockey India Announces ₹10 Lakh Reward

As Indian hockey celebrates a century of its illustrious legacy, one of its modern-day icons has added another unforgettable chapter to that history.
Manpreet Singh became the most-capped player in Indian hockey history, making his 413th international appearance during India’s FIH Hockey Pro League 2025-26 match against Germany in Rotterdam and surpassing the long-standing record of 412 caps held by former India captain and current Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey.
To commemorate the landmark achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹10 lakh for the veteran midfielder, recognising his extraordinary contribution to the sport and his unwavering service to the national team over the past 15 years. The milestone is more than a statistical accomplishment—it is a celebration of consistency, leadership and one of the finest careers ever witnessed in Indian hockey.
Manpreet’s international journey began in 2011, when he made his senior debut as a fearless 19-year-old with exceptional energy and maturity beyond his years. Over the following decade and a half, he transformed into the heartbeat of the Indian midfield, becoming renowned for his relentless work rate, tactical intelligence and ability to control matches under pressure.
His rise coincided with the resurgence of Indian hockey on the world stage, making him one of the defining figures of the sport’s revival. The record-breaking 413th cap is a fitting reward for a player whose commitment has never wavered despite the physical and mental demands of elite international hockey.
By reaching 413 international appearances, Manpreet has not only rewritten Indian history but also climbed into an elite group globally. He now sits fifth on the all-time list of men’s international hockey appearances, trailing only Belgium’s John-John Dohmen (481), Dutch legend Teun de Nooijer (453), Australia’s Eddie Ockenden (451) and Great Britain’s Barry Middleton (432).
Remarkably, Manpreet is currently the only active men’s player in world hockey with more than 400 international caps, underlining his exceptional longevity and sustained excellence at the highest level.
He has also moved ahead of Pakistan’s Waseem Ahmed (410 caps) and Netherlands great Jeroen Delmee (401).
Few players have experienced as many highs and lows in Indian hockey as Manpreet Singh. He featured in the challenging London 2012 Olympics, where India struggled, but later captained the team to one of its greatest modern achievements the historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, ending a 41-year wait for an Olympic podium finish.
He was also instrumental in India’s back-to-back Olympic bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, helping establish the team as a consistent global contender.
Beyond the Olympics, Manpreet played crucial roles in India’s Asian Games gold medal triumphs in 2014 and 2022, Asia Cup victories in 2017 and 2025, and multiple Asian Champions Trophy titles.
His influence extended far beyond individual performances, often serving as the emotional and tactical leader of the squad.
Manpreet’s remarkable career has already earned him some of India’s most prestigious sporting honours. He received the Arjuna Award in 2018 in recognition of his outstanding achievements before being conferred the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, India’s highest sporting honour, in 2021. These accolades acknowledged not only his performances but also his role in inspiring a new generation of hockey players.
The latest milestone further strengthens his case as one of the greatest midfielders Indian hockey has ever produced.
Recognising the significance of the accomplishment, Hockey India announced a ₹10 lakh cash reward for Manpreet Singh. President Dr. Dilip Tirkey, whose own record was surpassed, praised the veteran midfielder’s dedication and consistency, describing the achievement as a reflection of years of hard work and passion for the sport. Tirkey also highlighted Manpreet’s central role in many of India’s greatest recent successes, including the nation’s return to the Olympic podium.
Meanwhile, Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh commended Manpreet’s discipline and leadership, calling the milestone a proud moment for Indian hockey and an inspiration for future generations.
Speaking after becoming India’s most-capped player, Manpreet expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the country over so many years. He dedicated the achievement to his teammates, acknowledging that every player who had shared the field with him contributed to the journey. He also paid tribute to his family particularly his mother, brothers, wife and children for their unwavering support throughout his career.
Despite already accomplishing so much, Manpreet revealed that his biggest motivation remains unchanged: winning medals for India and continuing to chase the dream of Olympic gold.
More than just a numerical record, Manpreet Singh’s 413th appearance symbolises an era of transformation in Indian hockey. From a promising teenager in Mithapur, Jalandhar, to one of the most respected midfielders in world hockey, his journey reflects perseverance, adaptability and excellence. He has been at the centre of India’s revival on the global stage and has consistently delivered in the sport’s biggest moments.
As Indian hockey enters its next chapter, Manpreet’s legacy is already secure. His record-breaking career has set a benchmark that future generations will aspire to match, while his leadership and achievements will continue to inspire young players across the country.
With 413 caps and counting, Manpreet Singh has not only rewritten the record books but also cemented his place among the greatest players ever to wear the Indian jersey.
