Indian table tennis continued its impressive rise on the international circuit as Manush Shah and Diya Chitale captured the mixed doubles title at WTT Contender Lagos 2026 with a commanding straight-games victory in the final.

The top-seeded Indian pair defeated France’s Leo De Nodrest and Camille Lutz 3-0 (11-8, 14-12, 11-8) in a confident and composed performance to lift their third WTT Contender title together and fourth mixed doubles title overall as a partnership.

The triumph in Lagos further established Manush and Diya as one of India’s most consistent and successful mixed doubles combinations in recent years. After previously winning WTT Contender titles in Tunis in 2025 and Muscat earlier in 2026, the pair now added Lagos to their growing list of international achievements.

What stood out throughout the tournament was the control and maturity with which the Indian duo handled pressure situations. Even in the final, where the French pair pushed them hard in the second game, Manush and Diya maintained composure during crucial rallies and refused to allow momentum to shift. The opening game saw the Indians settle quickly into rhythm. Manush’s sharp placement and Diya’s aggressive returns consistently put the French pair under pressure. Holding a narrow advantage midway through the game, the Indian pair accelerated towards the finish, closing it out 11-8 with controlled attacking play.

The second game proved to be the turning point of the final. De Nodrest and Lutz raised their level significantly and pushed the Indians into long rallies and deuce situations. However, whenever the pressure increased, the Indian pair found answers. Diya produced several fearless forehand winners while Manush dominated the short exchanges near the table.

Eventually, the Indian duo edged the tense second game 14-12, a psychological blow from which the French pair never fully recovered.

With confidence firmly on their side, Manush and Diya entered the third game aggressively and maintained control from the beginning. Though the French pair attempted to stay close, the Indians continued to dictate the pace and completed the straight-games victory with another 11-8 finish. The title run in Lagos was impressive not just because of the final but because of the overall consistency shown throughout the event.

In the semifinals, the Indian pair defeated Canada’s Edward Ly and Mo Zhang in straight games 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 to book their place in the title clash. Earlier in the tournament, they had also overcome a strong Japanese combination in the quarterfinals.

The victory in Lagos highlights the growing strength of Indian table tennis doubles combinations on the global circuit. While India has traditionally produced strong singles players, recent years have seen a clear improvement in doubles performances across categories, particularly in mixed doubles. Manush Shah has quietly developed into one of India’s most reliable doubles specialists. His quick hands, sharp anticipation, and tactical awareness make him extremely effective in fast-paced mixed doubles matches. Diya Chitale, meanwhile, continues to mature rapidly as one of India’s brightest young table tennis stars.

Still only in her teenage years, Diya once again showed tremendous composure against experienced international opponents. Her ability to perform under pressure was evident throughout the tournament, especially during tight moments in both the semifinals and final.

Beyond the mixed doubles title, Indian players also enjoyed strong overall performances at the tournament.

Manush Shah advanced to the men’s singles semifinals after an impressive 3-2 victory over France’s Thibault Poret. The men’s doubles pair of Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah also reached the final after defeating Nigeria’s Mati and Kuti in straight games.

In women’s doubles, both Ayhika Mukherjee-Sutirtha Mukherjee and Diya Chitale-Yashaswini Ghorpade reached the semifinals, underlining India’s depth across categories.

Additionally, Manav, Manush, Diya, and Ayhika all progressed to the singles quarterfinals, making it a highly productive week overall for the Indian contingent in Lagos.

The performances also come at an important stage of the season as Indian players continue building momentum ahead of bigger international events later in the year, including Asian-level competitions and qualification tournaments.

For Manush Shah and Diya Chitale, however, Lagos once again reinforced a growing reality — they are becoming one of the most dependable mixed doubles pairs outside the traditional table tennis powerhouses.

Winning three WTT Contender titles within a relatively short period is no small achievement. It reflects consistency, chemistry, and the ability to adapt against different styles of opponents across international tournaments.

And with both players continuing to improve individually as well, Indian table tennis may have found a partnership capable of competing regularly for major titles on the world stage.
