India’s campaign at the World Boxing Cup Stage 2 in Guiyang, China, gathered further momentum on Thursday as Minakshi produced an assured performance to book her place in the women’s 51kg quarterfinals.

The reigning 48kg world champion defeated Poland’s Natalia Kuczewska by a unanimous 5-0 decision, adding another strong result to an encouraging tournament for the Indian contingent.

The victory also highlighted Minakshi’s smooth transition to the Olympic 51kg weight category. Having established herself as the world champion and current world No. 1 at 48kg, she has moved up in weight with confidence and continues to demonstrate the technical quality and ring intelligence that have made her one of India’s leading boxers.

Against Kuczewska, Minakshi controlled the bout from the opening bell. She consistently landed cleaner combinations, managed distance effectively and displayed superior movement to earn the judges’ approval across all five scorecards. The unanimous verdict reflected her dominance and ensured her progression into the last eight without any controversy.

Her qualification adds to an increasingly impressive showing by the Indian boxing team in Guiyang, where multiple athletes remain in contention for podium finishes.

While Minakshi celebrated a comfortable win, it was a disappointing day for Abhinash Jamwal in the men’s 65kg category. Facing Kyrgyzstan’s Mirzokhid Imamnazarov, Abhinash struggled to match his opponent’s pace and precision, eventually losing by a unanimous 0-5 decision. The defeat brought his campaign to an end and reduced India’s representation in the men’s draw.

Despite that setback, India’s overall position in the tournament remains strong. Five Indian boxers have advanced to the quarterfinal stage: Nikhil in the men’s 55kg division, Deepak Poonia in 70kg, Minakshi in women’s 51kg, Prachi in women’s 57kg and Saneh in women’s 65kg.

Even more encouraging is the fact that two Indian boxers have already guaranteed themselves medals by reaching the semi-finals. Jyoti, competing in the women’s 48kg category, and Jugnoo in the men’s 85kg division have secured podium finishes and now have the opportunity to fight for even higher honours in the later stages of the competition.

The Boxing World Cup Stage 2 has emerged as an important platform for Indian athletes to test themselves against top international opposition while gaining valuable ranking points and competitive experience. With several young boxers progressing deep into the tournament, the event also offers a glimpse into the country’s growing depth ahead of future major championships and the Olympic qualification cycle.

Attention will now shift to a crucial Day 5 schedule that could significantly shape India’s medal tally.

Minakshi faces one of her toughest tests yet when she takes on Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the women’s 51kg quarterfinal. Balkibekova is an experienced and technically accomplished boxer, making the contest one of the standout bouts involving Indian athletes in the tournament.

Saneh will also enter the ring in the women’s 65kg quarterfinal against Poland’s Kinga Krowka, aiming to continue her impressive run and move within one victory of a guaranteed medal.

In the men’s competition, Nikhil is set for a challenging encounter against Azerbaijan’s Amin Mammadzada in the 55kg division. Azerbaijan has consistently produced elite amateur boxers, and the matchup promises to be a stern examination of the Indian boxer’s credentials.

Prachi will represent India in the women’s 57kg category against Chinese Taipei’s Chengyu Yang, while Deepak Poonia will compete in the men’s 70kg quarterfinal against Azerbaijan’s Nabi Isgandarov. Victories for any of these boxers would secure semi-final berths and guarantee at least bronze medals under the tournament format.

India’s performances in Guiyang underline the steady progress of its boxing programme across both men’s and women’s divisions. The presence of multiple athletes in the knockout rounds reflects increasing depth beyond the country’s established stars and highlights the effectiveness of sustained international exposure.

Among them, Minakshi’s transition to the Olympic 51kg category is particularly noteworthy. Success in a heavier division could significantly enhance India’s prospects in future global competitions, especially with the Olympic cycle placing greater emphasis on the weight class.

As the tournament enters its decisive stages, India finds itself well positioned to add to its medal haul. With Jyoti and Jugnoo already assured of podium finishes and five more boxers still fighting for semi-final spots, the team has every reason to be optimistic.

For now, Minakshi’s commanding 5-0 victory stands as another statement performance—one that keeps India’s hopes alive and sets the stage for a series of high-stakes quarterfinal clashes in Guiyang.
