Mohun Bagan Storm into Durand Cup Quarter-Finals with Dominant 6-0 Win

Mohun Bagan Super Giant produced one of their most emphatic performances of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup, defeating CISF Protectors 6-0 at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday to seal top spot in Group A and progress to the quarter-finals.

The Mariners entered their final group fixture already assured of a place in the knockout stages after winning their opening two matches. But there was little sign of complacency as they dominated from the opening whistle and eventually completed a perfect group-stage campaign with three wins from three matches.

The star of the evening was Sahal Abdul Samad, who scored a first-half hat trick as Mohun Bagan dismantled the CISF defense. Manvir Singh, Jamie Maclaren, and Tekcham Abhishek Singh also found the net as the Mariners turned the contest into a one-sided affair.

CISF Protectors initially managed to withstand the pressure, with captain Mohammad Khalid helping organize a defensive unit that faced wave after wave of Mohun Bagan attacks. The Mariners had already threatened through Subhasish Bose's long-range effort in the ninth minute before finally breaking the deadlock in the 17th.

Dejan Dražić produced an excellent defense-splitting pass from inside his own half to release Tekcham Abhishek Singh down the right. His effort took a deflection and fell to Liston Colaco, who chose the unselfish option, squaring the ball for Sahal to finish. The opening goal immediately opened up the game. Just two minutes later, Mohun Bagan doubled their advantage. Manvir Singh played Dražić into space on the right, and the Serbian midfielder delivered a composed ball across the face of goal for Sahal, who made no mistake from close range.

Sahal had his second goal within two minutes of his first.

Mohun Bagan continued to exploit the gaps in the CISF defence, with their movement and passing creating problems across the pitch. Manvir initially missed an opportunity, firing directly at the goalkeeper, but he soon made amends. In the 24th minute, Tekcham Abhishek Singh delivered an inviting cross from the right. Manvir controlled the ball brilliantly before finishing confidently to make it 3-0.

The Mariners were now completely in control. Manvir came close to creating another opportunity after capitalising on a misplaced pass and entering the penalty area, but Muneesh Kumar produced an important intervention to prevent another goal.

The fourth, however, was not far away.

The 37th minute produced the moment of the night. Sahal collected possession near the halfway line and embarked on a direct run towards the CISF penalty area. He moved past defenders with composure before finishing with his right foot beyond the goalkeeper. It completed a stunning first-half hat-trick and capped one of Sahal's most influential performances of the tournament. Mohun Bagan entered half-time with a 4-0 advantage after controlling 75 per cent possession during the opening 45 minutes.

CISF, meanwhile, had managed only one off-target attempt.

Despite the four-goal advantage, Mohun Bagan continued to create chances after the restart. Head coach Panagiotis Dilimperis made four changes at half-time, bringing on Asish Rai, Alex Saji, Kiyan Nassiri Giri and Abhishek Dhananjay Suryavanshi. The changes resulted in an all-Indian Mohun Bagan line-up for the second half, but the intensity of the attack remained largely unchanged. Manvir narrowly missed when attempting to chip the advancing Raj Kumar Mahato and later headed an Asish Rai cross wide.

Liston Colaco also saw an effort blocked after another dangerous delivery, while Raj Kumar produced another important intervention to deny Manvir inside the box.

The CISF was under sustained pressure and struggling to create any meaningful response.

The fifth goal finally arrived in the 68th minute. Sahal, who had already completed his hat-trick, turned creator with a superb no-look through ball that released substitute Jamie Maclaren. The Australian striker opened up his body before calmly finishing through the goalkeeper's legs to make it 5-0. Five minutes later, the Mariners added another.

Liston combined neatly with Tekcham Abhishek Singh, whose perfectly timed run into the penalty area was rewarded when he finished precisely into the roof of the net. The scoreline was now 6-0. CISF came close to finding a consolation late in the match. Jacob C delivered a dangerous cross that Gaurab Das could not direct towards goal, while Das later tested Syed Zahid Hussain with a powerful free-kick.

Gurpal Singh also forced the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper into an excellent save deep into stoppage time. But the Mariners' defense held firm to preserve a clean sheet.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive victory and a perfect group stage record for Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Three matches. Three victories. Sixteen goals scored. Just one conceded.

The result sees Mohun Bagan finish top of Group A and advance to the quarter-finals with considerable momentum. For CISF Protectors, the campaign ends without a point after three defeats. The Mariners, meanwhile, have made their ambitions clear. The Durand Cup is now entering its knockout phase, where the margins will become significantly smaller and every mistake could end a team's campaign.

But based on their group-stage performance, Mohun Bagan have given the rest of the competition plenty of reason to take notice.

Sahal Abdul Samad's hat-trick provided the headline, but the bigger statement was made by the entire team: Mohun Bagan are through to the quarter-finals, unbeaten, in perfect form and with their sights firmly set on the Durand Cup trophy.
