In a thrilling Global Chess League Season 4 player draft held in Mumbai on Monday, Indian chess sensation Nihal Sarin triggered a fierce bidding war before joining FYERS American Gambits. Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers strengthened their squad with Women’s Chess World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh teaming up with Magnus Carlsen, while five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand made history by switching teams to partner with Arjun Erigaisi at PBG Alaskan Knights. The much-awaited Global Chess League Season 4 will take place in Bengaluru from September 3 to 13, promising high-voltage chess action in India’s tech capital.

The Global Chess League (GCL), a joint initiative by Tech Mahindra and FIDE, continues to elevate chess as a global sports and entertainment property. With Season 4 moving to Bengaluru, the league is set to capitalize on India’s rapid rise as a chess powerhouse. The country has produced numerous world champions and elite players, making this edition particularly special for Indian fans.

Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, highlighted the league’s growth: “What began as an ambitious vision to reimagine chess as a modern global sports and entertainment property has, over the last three seasons, evolved into one of the marquee events on the international chess calendar. GCL has demonstrated that the future of the sport lies not in changing its essence, but in expanding how it is experienced. As we head to Bengaluru for Global Chess League Season 4, the focus remains on growing the game’s global relevance and reach.”

Key Highlights from the Global Chess League Season 4 Draft

The draft saw intense competition right from the start. FYERS American Gambits secured 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov early and then won the high-stakes battle for Nihal Sarin. The young Indian Grandmaster, who recently became the first Indian to win the Bullet Chess Championship, was one of the most sought-after players in the draft room. He joins a youthful and explosive lineup featuring Sindarov, Daniil Dubov, Sara Khadem, Bibisara Assaubayeva, and Marc’Andria Maurizzi.

Prachura PP, co-owner of FYERS American Gambits, said: “We’re quite happy with our team composition. It’s an exciting team, a young team. Season 4 with this team is going to be special; for us, Bengaluru is our city, you can expect a lot of fans, and we’re going to show the others that we are the ‘home’ team.”

Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers built what many consider the strongest team on paper. Retaining Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri, they added Women’s Chess World Cup 2025 winner Divya Deshmukh, Koneru Humpy, Vidit Gujrathi, and reigning World Rapid Champion Volodar Murzin. Coach Pravin Thipsay noted the challenge ahead: “It’s going to be more challenging this year. We hope to retain the title this year, but I am sure all the other teams will be more motivated because everyone wants to beat the champions, particularly with Magnus Carlsen playing!”

Triveni Continental Kings opted for stability by retaining Season 3 MVP Alireza Firouzja, Wei Yi, and Zhu Jiner. They strengthened their Indian contingent with Aravindh Chithambaram and Pranav Venkatesh alongside Alexandra Kosteniuk. CEO Akash Premsen emphasized team dynamics: “For us, team dynamics is everything. We have built a very strong team, and we are looking forward to Global Chess League Season 4.”

PBG Alaskan Knights created a compelling narrative by pairing chess legend Viswanathan Anand with Arjun Erigaisi. The team also includes Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, Kateryna Lagno, Nino Batsiashvili, and Abhimanyu Mishra. Owner Punit Balan said: “Having Viswanathan Anand and Arjun Erigaisi in our team gives us representatives of two eras of Indian chess greatness the foundation and the future.”

Ganges Grandmasters landed Ian Nepomniachtchi as Icon and aggressively pursued Levon Aronian, who returns after two seasons away. The squad also features Leinier Dominguez, Polina Shuvalova, Stavroula Tsolakidou, and Indian talent Leon Luke Mendonca. Sreekar Channapragada of Ganges Grandmasters commented on their balanced approach.

upGrad Mumba Masters focused on continuity, retaining Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Harika Dronavalli while adding Carissa Yip and bringing back Bardiya Daneshvar.
