Nishika Singh and Tanisha Singh struck crucial half-centuries as South Delhi Superstarz defeated Central Delhi Queens by 29 runs to begin their Women’s DPL title defence.

Defending champions South Delhi Superstarz began their Women’s Delhi Premier League title defence with a statement victory, defeating Central Delhi Queens by 29 runs in the opening match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Half-centuries from Nishika Singh and Tanisha Singh helped South Delhi recover from an early wobble and post 156/5 in their 20 overs. Their bowlers then backed up the batting effort with a disciplined performance to restrict Central Delhi Queens to 127/7. The opening match of the Women’s DPL campaign offered South Delhi the perfect start as they once again showed the depth and resilience that made them champions. While the innings began under pressure, a decisive partnership between Nishika and Tanisha shifted the momentum firmly in favour of the Superstarz.

For Central Delhi, Nidhi Mahto produced a fighting half-century in the chase, but the target proved beyond reach after early wickets left the batting unit with too much to do.

South Delhi Superstarz did not enjoy the ideal start after being asked to bat first. The defending champions lost early wickets and found themselves under pressure during the opening stages of the innings. With the top order disrupted, the responsibility fell on Nishika Singh and Tanisha Singh to rebuild.

The pair responded with composure and confidence, stitching together an important 82-run partnership for the third wicket. At a time when South Delhi needed stability, both batters showed the ability to rotate the strike while also capitalising on scoring opportunities.

Their partnership changed the complexion of the innings. Rather than allowing Central Delhi Queens to build sustained pressure, Nishika and Tanisha gradually wrestled control back. They kept the scoreboard moving and attacked whenever the bowlers offered room or loose deliveries.

Both batters brought up impressive half-centuries, laying the platform for South Delhi to push towards a competitive total. Nishika’s dismissal eventually brought the partnership to an end, but by then the Superstarz had recovered strongly from their early setbacks. South Delhi lost a few wickets at regular intervals in the latter stages, preventing them from launching an even bigger finish, but their total of 156/5 gave the defending champions a strong platform.

The performance was a reminder of the value of partnerships in T20 cricket. South Delhi had been in trouble early, but the 82-run stand between Nishika and Tanisha ensured that the innings never completely lost momentum.

Sumiti Soni Impresses for Central Delhi

Despite ending on the losing side, Central Delhi Queens had encouraging performances with the ball. Sumiti Soni was the standout bowler, finishing with excellent figures of 2/13 from her four overs. In a high-scoring T20 contest, her ability to restrict the South Delhi batters proved particularly valuable.

Medhavi Bidhuri also made an important contribution, picking up 2/24. The two bowlers ensured that South Delhi did not run away with the innings after Nishika and Tanisha had rebuilt the total. Their wickets in the middle and latter stages helped Central Delhi keep the final target within reach.

However, chasing 157 against the defending champions would require a strong start.

That did not happen.

Central Delhi Queens began the chase knowing that a positive powerplay could put pressure back on South Delhi. Instead, they found themselves in immediate trouble. The Queens were reduced to 31/3, with South Delhi’s bowlers making early breakthroughs and preventing the batting side from building momentum.

At that stage, Central Delhi needed a substantial partnership. Monika and Nidhi Mahto provided exactly that. The pair added 65 runs for the fourth wicket, giving the Queens hope of recovering from their difficult start. Monika played with aggression, scoring a quick 30 from just 19 deliveries.

Her innings helped ease some of the pressure on Mahto, who took on the responsibility of holding the chase together. But when Monika was dismissed, the equation once again became difficult for Central Delhi. The required run rate continued to climb, and South Delhi sensed an opportunity to tighten their grip on the contest.

Nidhi Mahto Fights a Lone Battle

Nidhi Mahto continued to battle despite losing partners around her. She brought up a well-earned half-century and attempted to keep Central Delhi in the contest. Her 63 from 55 balls was the standout individual effort in the chase and showed considerable determination after the team’s early collapse. However, T20 chases require partnerships, particularly when the target is above 150.

Mahto struggled to find enough support at the other end as wickets and dot balls increased the pressure. With the asking rate rising, Central Delhi needed a late surge. That surge never arrived. When Mahto was eventually dismissed for 63, the Queens’ hopes effectively ended. Central Delhi finished on 127/7 from their 20 overs, falling 29 runs short.

South Delhi’s bowling performance was disciplined throughout the chase. Mayuri Singh emerged as the standout performer, returning figures of 2/15 from her four overs. Her economical spell played a key role in ensuring that Central Delhi could not build the momentum needed for a successful chase. The Superstarz had already done the hard work with the bat through Nishika and Tanisha, but their bowlers ensured that the advantage was not wasted.

The defending champions were able to strike early, forcing Central Delhi into recovery mode before tightening their control during the middle and closing stages. The result underlined South Delhi’s ability to win matches through different phases of the game. They recovered after losing early wickets, built a competitive total through a major partnership, struck early with the ball and then controlled the chase despite Mahto’s resistance.

Perfect Start for the Defending Champions

For South Delhi Superstarz, the 29-run victory represents an ideal beginning to their title defence. Nishika Singh and Tanisha Singh provided the batting foundation, while Mayuri Singh led the bowling effort. More importantly, the team showed the composure expected from defending champions.

Central Delhi Queens will take positives from the performances of Sumiti Soni, Medhavi Bidhuri and Nidhi Mahto, but the early collapse in the chase proved decisive.

South Delhi, meanwhile, have made their intentions clear from the opening match. The defending champions have started with a win, and with key players already making important contributions, they have laid down an early marker in the Women’s Delhi Premier League.
