Payas Jain Stars as Ahmedabad APL Pipers Beat U Mumba TT at UTT Season 7

Payas Jain produced one of the standout performances of Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7, leading Ahmedabad APL Pipers to an impressive 9-6 victory over reigning champions U Mumba TT at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Saturday.
The young Indian paddler registered his maiden victory over compatriot Manush Shah in the decisive men's singles before teaming up with Austrian Olympian Sofia Polcanova to play a pivotal role in Ahmedabad's opening win of the campaign. The defeat marked U Mumba TT's second consecutive loss of the season, putting the defending champions under early pressure. Earlier in the day, Dabang Delhi TTC staged a remarkable comeback to edge HVR Kolkata Thunder Blades 8-7.
Asian Games medallist Sutirtha Mukherjee held her nerve in the deciding women's singles match, defeating doubles partner Ayhika Mukherjee to preserve Delhi's unbeaten start to the season. Organised under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani, Butterfly UTT Season 7 features 42 players from across the globe, including 14 Olympians, while continuing its mission of strengthening Indian table tennis through elite competition and grassroots development.
The evening encounter between Ahmedabad APL Pipers and U Mumba TT remained evenly balanced throughout, with momentum shifting after almost every match. U Mumba struck first as French paddler Lilian Bardet defeated Adrien Rassenfosse 2-1 to hand the defending champions an early advantage. Anna Hursey then extended Mumbai's lead with another impressive display, upsetting Indian star Manika Batra in three games.
Trailing after the opening singles matches, Ahmedabad found the perfect response in the mixed doubles. Payas Jain and Sofia Polcanova combined brilliantly to edge Manush Shah and Anna Hursey in a tense three-game contest. Their narrow victory reduced the deficit and shifted momentum back towards the Pipers heading into the final two matches.
With Ahmedabad needing a big performance, Payas Jain delivered arguably the finest victory of his UTT career. Facing Indian international Manush Shah, Payas produced a composed and confident display to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory. It was his first-ever win over Manush, making the result even more significant.
The victory levelled the tie at 6-6 and set the stage for the final women's singles match. Polcanova, bringing all her international experience to the table, ensured Ahmedabad completed the comeback. The Austrian Olympian defeated Anusha Kutumbale in straight games, winning 3-0 to seal a memorable 9-6 victory for the Pipers.
Payas was deservedly named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie, Indian Player of the Tie, and also received the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award after an outstanding all-round performance. Polcanova earned the Foreign Player of the Tie honour for her decisive contribution.
Delhi Escape After Ankur's Stunning Upset
The day's opening tie produced equally dramatic moments as Dabang Delhi TTC edged HVR Kolkata Thunder Blades 8-7. Egypt's Youssef Abdelaziz gave Delhi the perfect start by recovering from a game down to defeat Eduard Ionescu 2-1. However, Kolkata responded immediately through Singapore's Zeng Jian, who edged Maria Xiao in a closely contested women's singles match to level the overall tie.
Delhi regained control in the mixed doubles as Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Maria Xiao defeated the pairing of Ankur Bhattacharjee and Zeng Jian 2-1. The momentum appeared firmly with Delhi until one of the biggest upsets of the tournament unfolded.
Young Indian paddler Ankur Bhattacharjee produced a sensational performance to defeat veteran Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in straight games. The Kolkata player held his nerve during two golden points to secure a remarkable 3-0 victory, swinging the tie dramatically in his team's favour and leaving Delhi on the brink of defeat. With everything resting on the final women's singles contest, Sutirtha Mukherjee stepped up under immense pressure.
Facing close friend and regular doubles partner Ayhika Mukherjee, Sutirtha delivered a composed display to win all three games comfortably. Her straight-games victory completed Delhi's comeback and secured an 8-7 triumph. Sutirtha was named the Indian Player of the Tie, while Ankur collected both the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie and Bisleri Shot of the Tie awards for his memorable victory over Sathiyan. Zeng Jian was adjudged the Foreign Player of the Tie.
Earlier in the day, the Dream UTT Juniors competition also produced exciting contests. U Mumba TT continued their excellent start in the junior competition with a convincing 7-2 victory over PBG Pune Jaguars. Meanwhile, Dempo Goa Challengers bounced back strongly to defeat UP Prometheans 5-4, handing the latter their first defeat of the campaign.
The junior league continues to provide young Indian players with valuable competitive exposure alongside the country's premier professional table tennis league.
Butterfly UTT Season 7 continues on Sunday with another double-header. UP Prometheans will take on PBG Pune Jaguars, while Ahmedabad APL Pipers will look to build on their winning start when they face Dempo Goa Challengers.
With Payas Jain announcing himself as one of the breakout Indian stars of the season and Dabang Delhi TTC maintaining their unbeaten run through sheer resilience, the opening week of UTT Season 7 has already produced high-quality table tennis and dramatic finishes, setting the stage for another exciting day of action in Goa.
