Sutirtha Mukherjee Holds Her Nerve as Dabang Delhi Edge Kolkata in Butterfly UTT Season 7 Classic

Former champions Dabang Delhi TTC produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades 8-7 in one of the most thrilling ties of Butterfly Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa on Saturday.
With the contest hanging in the balance until the final match, it was Asian Games medallist Sutirtha Mukherjee who stepped up under immense pressure to guide Delhi to their second consecutive victory of the season. The win ensured Dabang Delhi maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign, while Kolkata were left wondering what might have been after young sensation Ankur Bhattacharjee produced one of the standout performances of the tournament by defeating veteran Indian star G. Sathiyan in straight games.
With 42 players, including 14 Olympians, competing across seven franchises, Butterfly UTT Season 7 continues to deliver high-quality table tennis while strengthening India's domestic ecosystem under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
The tie began with an entertaining men's singles contest featuring Egypt's Youssef Abdelaziz and Romania's Eduard Ionescu. After dropping the opening game, Abdelaziz responded impressively, raising the intensity of his attacking game while cutting down his unforced errors. The Egyptian reeled off six consecutive points in the deciding game to complete a remarkable turnaround and secure a 2-1 victory (6-11, 11-7, 11-4).
The comeback gave Dabang Delhi an early advantage and set the tone for what would become an intensely fought contest.
Kolkata responded immediately in the women's singles through Singapore international Zeng Jian, who faced Spain's Maria Xiao. The match showcased some of the highest-quality rallies of the evening, with both players producing exceptional shot-making from mid-distance. After splitting the opening two games, the decisive third game remained neck-and-neck before Zeng held her composure during the crucial moments to claim it 11-9, sealing a 2-1 victory.
Her win brought the overall tie level at 3-3, ensuring neither side could establish early control. The mixed doubles encounter once again shifted momentum. Delhi's experienced pairing of G. Sathiyan and Maria Xiao took on Kolkata's combination of Ankur Bhattacharjee and Zeng Jian.
After Kolkata claimed the second game to level the match, Delhi responded strongly in the decider. Sathiyan's tactical awareness combined perfectly with Xiao's aggressive returns as they comfortably secured the deciding game 11-5, handing Delhi another narrow lead heading into the final two matches.
At that stage, the former champions appeared to have one hand on the tie.
The biggest talking point of the evening came in the fourth match when rising Indian star Ankur Bhattacharjee faced one of the country's most accomplished paddlers, G. Sathiyan. What followed was arguably the finest individual performance of the tournament so far. Despite trailing 3-9 in the opening game, Ankur staged a remarkable comeback, winning seven of the final eight points before edging the Golden Point to steal the game.
The confidence gained from that recovery transformed his performance.
Roared on by the crowd, the youngster dominated the second game 11-6, displaying fearless attacking table tennis against the vastly experienced Sathiyan. The third game was equally dramatic, with Sathiyan forcing another Golden Point. Yet Ankur once again showed exceptional composure, closing out the contest 3-0 (11-10, 11-6, 11-10) to hand Kolkata a crucial advantage.
The result stunned the Goa crowd and placed HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades just one game away from securing the tie.
With Delhi facing defeat, the responsibility fell on Sutirtha Mukherjee in the final women's singles match against her close friend and long-time doubles partner Ayhika Mukherjee. The occasion demanded a flawless performance, and Sutirtha delivered exactly that. After recovering from an early deficit, she captured the opening game 11-6, before completely dominating the second game 11-2 with aggressive forehand attacks and outstanding placement.
Needing one more game to secure the overall tie, Sutirtha remained calm despite Ayhika's attempts to fight back. She maintained control throughout the third game, eventually sealing an 11-7 victory to complete a clinical 3-0 sweep. Her composed display turned what had seemed like certain defeat into a memorable victory for Delhi.
Sutirtha's match-winning display earned her the Indian Player of the Tie award. Despite ending on the losing side, Ankur Bhattacharjee was deservedly named the ChatGPT Match IQ Player of the Tie after his sensational victory over Sathiyan. He also claimed the Bisleri Shot of the Tie award. Kolkata's Zeng Jian received the Foreign Player of the Tie honour following another influential performance in both singles and doubles.
Dream UTT Juniors Continue Alongside Main League
Earlier in the day, the Dream UTT Juniors competition also continued to provide exciting action. U Mumba TT maintained their unbeaten record with a convincing 7-2 victory over PBG Pune Jaguars, while Dempo Goa Challengers bounced back strongly to edge UP Prometheans 5-4, handing the latter their first defeat of the campaign.
The junior competition remains a vital platform for developing India's next generation of table tennis talent.
The victory moves Dabang Delhi TTC forward with valuable momentum as Butterfly UTT Season 7 gathers pace. While the final scoreline read 8-7, the tie demonstrated just how evenly matched the competition has become, with every individual game carrying enormous significance. For Delhi, the resilience shown after Ankur Bhattacharjee's stunning upset of Sathiyan could prove invaluable later in the season. Meanwhile, Kolkata can take immense encouragement from the emergence of one of India's brightest young stars, whose fearless display against one of the country's most decorated players was among the defining moments of the tournament so far.
With reigning champions U Mumba TT set to face Ahmedabad APL Pipers later in the evening, Butterfly UTT Season 7 continues to showcase why it remains one of the world's premier franchise table tennis leagues, combining elite international talent with the rapid rise of India's next generation.
