Praveen Chithravel Set for Star-Studded Triple Jump Showdown at Madrid Silver Meet

Indian triple jumper Praveen Chithravel will face one of the strongest fields of the season when he competes at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver Meeting in Madrid, Spain, on July 16.
The prestigious meet, to be held at the Estadio Vallehermoso, has long been synonymous with elite triple jumping, regularly attracting Olympic medallists, world champions and athletes capable of crossing the coveted 17-metre mark. This year's edition continues that tradition, with five athletes boasting personal bests beyond 17 metres set to line up alongside the Indian star. For Praveen, the competition represents another important opportunity to test himself against some of the world's very best as he continues his preparations for the major championships later this season.
The Madrid Meeting has earned a reputation as one of Europe's premier destinations for triple jump competition. Over the decades, the runway at Vallehermoso has welcomed several of the sport's greatest names, including former world record holder Jonathan Edwards, Olympic champion Nelson Évora, world champion Fabrice Hugues Zango, Cuba's Yoelbi Quesada, and Poland's Zdzislaw Hoffmann.
The event has consistently produced world-class performances and remains one of the standout stops on the World Athletics Continental Tour calendar. Competing at such a venue offers valuable experience for athletes looking to establish themselves among the world's elite.
Among the international field, Praveen Chithravel will carry India's hopes in an event that has become one of the country's strongest disciplines in recent years. The Tamil Nadu athlete has steadily established himself as one of Asia's leading triple jumpers. His breakthrough came with a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Games, followed by an even stronger performance when he upgraded that result to silver at the 2025 Asian Championships, confirming his consistency at the continental level.
Praveen also finished as the World University Championships silver medallist last year, further strengthening his credentials against quality international opposition.
While Madrid will mark his first appearance at the famous Vallehermoso Stadium, he is no stranger to Spanish competitions. During the 2025 season, Praveen competed at meetings in Guadalajara, Málaga and Pamplona, gaining valuable experience on the European circuit. That familiarity with Spanish conditions could prove beneficial when he takes on another world-class field in Madrid.
Elite Competition Awaits
Heading the entry list is Algeria's Yasser Mohamed Triki, one of the most consistent triple jumpers in the world over the past few seasons. The Algerian arrives in Madrid with a personal best of 17.67m, achieved earlier this year at the Doha Diamond League. Triki is also the reigning World Indoor silver medallist and has finished among the world's top performers at both the Olympic Games and World Championships.
Italy's Andrea Dallavalle will be another major contender.
The World Championships silver medallist and European Championships medallist owns a personal best of 17.64m and is renowned for producing his best performances during major competitions. The field also includes Cuba's Cristian Atanay Nápoles, the 2023 World Championships bronze medallist, whose personal best stands at 17.40m.
New Zealand's exciting youngster Ethan Olivier, the 2024 World Under-20 champion, will also feature after already making his Olympic debut. Adding local interest will be Spain's Eneko Carrascal, who enters the meet in career-best form after recently producing a personal best leap of 17.28m. With five athletes owning personal bests beyond 17 metres, Praveen will face arguably his toughest competition of the season.
Although the Madrid Meeting is classified as a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event, its competitive standard often rivals that of Diamond League meetings. For athletes chasing qualification standards, ranking points and consistency against elite opposition, such competitions play a crucial role in the international calendar. For Praveen, competing against several world-class jumpers offers more than just the opportunity to win a medal.
Performing well in Madrid would provide a significant confidence boost heading into the second half of the outdoor season while also allowing him to benchmark himself against athletes expected to contend for medals at future global championships.
The meet also offers another opportunity to improve his world ranking, an increasingly important factor in qualification for major international competitions.
Indian athletics has witnessed remarkable progress in the jumps over the past few years, with athletes regularly challenging for medals at Asian and international competitions. Praveen has been central to that rise, consistently delivering performances at the continental level while gaining valuable exposure on the European circuit. His participation in elite competitions such as Madrid reflects the growing confidence Indian athletes have in competing alongside the world's best rather than limiting themselves to regional events.
Each outing against top international opposition contributes to his development and prepares him for even bigger stages.
While the spotlight in Madrid may naturally fall on established global stars like Triki and Dallavalle, Praveen Chithravel has already shown that he possesses the talent to compete with the world's leading triple jumpers. A strong showing at the historic Vallehermoso Stadium would further strengthen his reputation as one of Asia's premier field event athletes and continue his steady rise on the international circuit.
With one of the strongest triple jump fields assembled this season, the Madrid Silver Meeting promises to be a stern examination of Praveen's progress. For the Indian star, it is another opportunity to measure himself against world-class opposition and take another important step towards establishing himself among the global elite.
