Punjab FC Appoint Greek Coach Pavlos Dermitzakis as Head Coach Ahead of 2026-27 Season
Punjab FC have announced the appointment of experienced Greek coach Pavlos Dermitzakis as the club's new head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The 57-year-old joins the Indian Super League (ISL) club on a two-year contract after leaving Greek Super League 2 outfit Panionios FC, bringing with him more than two decades of coaching experience across Greece's professional football pyramid.
The appointment signals Punjab FC's intent to continue building a competitive squad while maintaining its commitment to developing young Indian footballers. Dermitzakis arrives with an impressive coaching résumé that includes promotions, league titles, and experience managing several clubs in Greece's top division. For Punjab FC, the appointment represents another important step in the club's long-term project of establishing itself as a consistent force in Indian football.
Dermitzakis has spent over 20 years in football management, building a reputation for developing competitive teams and guiding clubs to promotion. His coaching journey began with Ergotelis during the 2002-03 season in the fourth tier of Greek football. Although it was his first managerial role, it laid the foundation for a career that would see him work across every level of Greek football.
He moved to Atsalenios the following season, where he enjoyed immediate success by leading the club to promotion to the third division. During his four-year spell, Dermitzakis built one of the league's strongest home records, with the Heraklion-based club remaining unbeaten at home during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns. Those early achievements established him as one of Greece's promising young managers and opened the door to opportunities at bigger clubs.
Dermitzakis continued his upward trajectory after joining GS Diagoras 1905. Once again, he delivered promotion, guiding the club into the Beta Ethniki, Greece's second division, while maintaining another unbeaten home record. His growing reputation earned him opportunities to manage several clubs in the Greek Super League, including PAOK, Asteras Tripolis, Panthrakikos, and OFI Crete.
Managing at Greece's highest level provided Dermitzakis with experience working in demanding environments where expectations extended beyond simply achieving results. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for organising disciplined teams capable of competing against stronger opposition while also improving younger players.
That profile appears well aligned with Punjab FC's football philosophy.
Among Dermitzakis's most notable achievements came with Veria in 1960. Appointed as manager of the second-division side, he guided the club to back-to-back North Group titles during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, demonstrating his consistency over multiple campaigns.
He later joined Panserraikos FC in 2022 and once again achieved promotion, leading the club back to the Greek Super League after a 12-year absence.
Repeated success across different clubs highlights one of the defining characteristics of Dermitzakis's coaching career—his ability to build winning teams capable of sustained performance rather than relying on short-term success. That experience could prove invaluable as Punjab FC seeks to establish itself among the ISL's leading clubs.
Before becoming a coach, Dermitzakis enjoyed a long and successful playing career as a forward. Beginning with his hometown club Kavala FC, he spent 15 years playing professional football exclusively in Greece. Across more than 500 professional appearances, he scored over 200 goals, representing several clubs including PAOK, Athinaikos, Kalamata, Panegialios, EA Rethimniakou, Anagennisi Karditsa, Atromitos, and Ergotelis.
His experience as both a prolific striker and later as a coach gives him a broad understanding of player development, tactical systems, and the demands of professional football.
Speaking after his appointment, Dermitzakis explained that Punjab FC's long-term vision played a decisive role in his decision to move to India.
