Punjab FC will aim to continue their strong run of form when they take on Sporting Club Delhi in what promises to be an intriguing Northern Derby in the Indian Super League 2025-26 season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday.

The match, scheduled to kick off at 7:30 PM IST, carries importance for both sides as the league table begins to tighten heading into a crucial stage of the campaign. Punjab FC arrive in New Delhi with momentum firmly on their side. The Shers have remained unbeaten in six of their previous seven matches and currently occupy seventh place with 14 points from eight games. Crucially, they also hold two matches in hand over most teams above them, meaning another victory could significantly strengthen their position in the race for the top half.

Their most recent outing showcased exactly why they are emerging as one of the league’s most dangerous attacking teams. After suffering a setback against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in Kolkata, Punjab responded emphatically by defeating league debutants Inter Kashi 3-0 in New Delhi. Goals from Samir Zeljković, Nsungusi Effiong and Bede Amarachi Osuji sealed a comfortable win and highlighted the attacking depth currently available to head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis.

The Greek coach believes the team is steadily improving with each game, though he remains cautious about maintaining consistency and concentration levels.

“After eight games, our performance is getting better and better and I am satisfied with the team,” Dilmperis said ahead of the fixture. “The point that we try to improve are the individual mistakes. Young players losing concentration or sometimes they are feeling very, very comfortable is the time they are making the mistakes. If we keep ourselves humble, then it's going to give us more concentration and a better performance.”

Punjab’s attacking unit has been one of the standout features of their season so far.

Nsungusi Effiong has emerged as one of the league’s most effective forwards, scoring seven goals already the third-highest tally in the competition. His physicality, movement and finishing have made him a constant threat inside the penalty area. Alongside him, Dani Ramirez continues to play a vital creative role, contributing three goals while also linking effectively between midfield and attack. Samir Zeljković and Osuji have added two goals each, while Manglenthang Kipgen’s pace and work rate have provided important balance in wide areas.

Creatively, Ramirez, Zeljković and Kipgen have all registered two assists, underlining the collective nature of Punjab’s attacking approach rather than relying on a single playmaker.

At the other end of the pitch, Punjab FC’s defensive structure has quietly become one of the strongest aspects of their campaign.

The centre-back pairing of Bijoy Varghese and Pramveer Singh has looked increasingly assured, while midfielder Ricky Shabong has emerged as a key figure shielding the defence. The young midfielder currently leads the league in interceptions, tackles and recoveries a remarkable statistic that reflects both his defensive intelligence and work rate.

Osuji, who has quickly adapted to Indian football, also praised the professionalism within the Punjab setup.

“I didn't expect the level of professionalism from the clubs, especially from Punjab,” Osuji said. “Because we are all doing everything in detail about the training and the measurement of your body fat. These are the things that I never expected. It came like a surprise for me.”

The Nigerian forward also stressed that the squad remains ambitious despite recent positive results.

“The mood has been the same from the day when we played Jamshedpur. We all want to do more. We all want to be better than when we did the game against Inter Kashi. And we want to carry it to the end of the season, especially now this crucial part.”

Sporting Club Delhi, meanwhile, enter the derby with improving confidence of their own.

After a difficult start to the campaign, the Delhi-based side has stabilised in recent weeks. They have lost only once in their last five matches, collecting two wins and two draws during that stretch. Their latest fixture ended in a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Mohammedan SC, a result that extended their unbeaten momentum even if it also highlighted some lingering defensive vulnerabilities.

Currently sitting on nine points from nine matches, Sporting Club Delhi know a strong performance in the derby could push them further away from relegation concerns while also helping establish credibility in their debut top-flight campaign. Dilmperis expects a difficult encounter despite Punjab entering as favourites on form.

“It's going to be a difficult game for us against a good team with some good players and with a young coach,” he said. “I do believe that Delhi has the advantage because they are almost complete with their target for the season to avoid relegation. On the other hand, we are still fighting to go up to the table.”

That contrast in objectives could shape the tactical approach on Saturday. Punjab are likely to dominate possession and attack aggressively through Effiong, Ramirez and Osuji, while Sporting Club Delhi may look to stay compact and exploit transitions. The pressure, however, will firmly be on Punjab FC, who know victories in games like this could define their push towards the upper end of the standings. The occasion itself also adds another layer of intrigue.

As the first-ever Northern Derby between the two clubs, the fixture represents a growing football rivalry in a region historically less associated with club football rivalries at the national level. With both teams looking to establish their identities and ambitions, Saturday’s contest could mark the beginning of a meaningful new chapter in Indian football’s northern landscape.
