India opened its campaign at the United World Wrestling (UWW) U23 Asian Wrestling Championships 2026 on a highly encouraging note as Greco-Roman wrestlers Sagar Singh and Suraj advanced to the finals of their respective weight categories in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Competing at the Tien Son Sport Center on the opening day of the continental competition, the Indian contingent delivered several strong performances against quality Asian opposition, with Sagar and Suraj emerging as the standout performers of the day. Their qualification for the gold medal bouts has already guaranteed India at least two silver medals from the opening day, while also raising hopes of an even bigger finish if both wrestlers can convert their momentum into gold medals in the finals.

The U23 Asian Championships is regarded as one of the most important developmental tournaments in international wrestling, featuring many of Asia’s best young talents who are expected to become future senior-level stars. With nations such as Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Japan and Kyrgyzstan regularly producing elite wrestlers, success at this level carries major significance.

India’s Greco-Roman wrestlers looked prepared for the challenge.

Leading the charge was Sagar Singh in the 67kg category. The Indian wrestler displayed impressive tactical discipline throughout his campaign, combining controlled defence with aggressive scoring opportunities whenever openings emerged. Sagar remained composed under pressure during crucial exchanges and consistently managed bouts intelligently to progress through the rounds. His movement and mat awareness stood out during the preliminary sessions as he secured his place in the final with a confident display against strong continental competition.

Sagar’s run to the gold medal bout represents one of the biggest performances of his young career so far and further strengthens India’s growing depth in Greco-Roman wrestling at the junior and U23 levels. Joining him in the finals is Suraj, who produced another assured performance in the 60kg category.

Suraj wrestled with remarkable confidence throughout the day, showing excellent control during transitions and maintaining attacking intent in difficult situations. His route to the final highlighted both technical sharpness and mental composure qualities essential in high-level international wrestling. By reaching the title clash, Suraj has already guaranteed India another medal and now stands one victory away from becoming Asian champion in his category.

The success of both wrestlers provided India with a major boost on the opening day of competition.

However, the day also featured moments of disappointment. In the 77kg category, Kumar Sachin fought hard in a closely contested semifinal against Alikhan Dursonov but narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Despite the defeat, Sachin showed strong fighting spirit against one of the tougher wrestlers in the draw and remained competitive throughout the bout. Indian wrestlers competing in the 72kg and 82kg categories, meanwhile, were unable to progress beyond the earlier rounds after facing strong opposition from some of Asia’s established wrestling nations.

Still, India’s overall start to the championships remained highly positive, particularly considering the pressure and intensity associated with continental-level events.

Reacting to the opening day performances, Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh praised the wrestlers for their determination and preparation.

“I extend my heartiest congratulations to the wrestlers advancing to the finals. The level of competition here in Vietnam is extremely high, and our athletes are showing great determination and fighting spirit on the mat,” Sanjay Singh said.

“We are proud of the hard work they have put in leading up to this championship and wish our finalists, along with the entire contingent competing in the upcoming days, the very best,” he added.

India’s encouraging performances also underline the continued progress being made within the country’s wrestling structure. Over the past decade, India has emerged as one of Asia’s strongest wrestling nations across freestyle, women’s wrestling and increasingly Greco-Roman categories as well. Exposure to international tournaments, improved coaching systems and a stronger domestic competition structure have contributed significantly to this rise.

The U23 level is especially important because it acts as the bridge between junior wrestling and senior international competition. Strong results here often indicate the emergence of future senior-level medal contenders. For India, the performances of Sagar Singh and Suraj are therefore important not just for immediate medals but also for the long-term future of the sport.

The Greco-Roman campaign will continue on the second day with more Indian wrestlers entering the competition. Neeraj will begin India’s challenge in the 55kg category, followed by Sumit in the 63kg division and Rohit Bura in the 87kg category. All three wrestlers will look to continue India’s momentum and push for quarterfinal and semifinal spots.

With two finalists already confirmed on the opening day, India has made exactly the kind of start it would have hoped for at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships.

Now the focus shifts to the finals, where Sagar Singh and Suraj will attempt to turn a promising beginning into a golden one for Indian wrestling.
